I knew nothing about this kid other than stats but I figured the stats translated to being a P6 contributor so not surprised

Pitt finally reached out to him but shouldn't they be prioritizing this local player?

Also, I thought someone in GB's position isnt allowed to recruit.

Non-assistant staffers can contact kids, but the contact is more restricted, and they can’t see recruits off-campus.

No different than Karlo contacting kids on the football side.

Makes sense but I'd think a kid playing 25 miles down the road would be made a priority. Maybe even an in-dorm visit by the staff.

Jason Capel had an in-home with him. Hopefully we can land this kid. Seems like a good Gueye replacement. If we can land a PG, we might have a chance.

Getting close to a commitment? He was on campus and said he loved the facilities. Now, if our practice gym was in a separate building instead of attached to The Pete, he'd be a lock.

I don't see how a dude who is 6'6" (i.e. almost certainly not as good of a shot blocker at the D1 level as Gueye) and shoots 27% from three (Geueye shot 36.4%) is a Gueye replacement. After seeing Payton's tape and then seeing him not even crack one of the worst power conference lineups in the country, I would be beyond skeptical about this dude being anything more than a warm body.

One of the best players in D2 translates to league average ACC. He can help some. Look at guys like Tyrone Haughton who couldn't get off the bench in D2 and Justice Kithcart who was a very average D2 guard. The best D2 players can contribute in the P6

Thats fair and I agree. Capel is not likely to bring in All-ACC players but hopefully he does get guys that can contribute and make the team better as a whole.

If he were 6'10" I might agree. But at 6'6", it's very possible that he is playing a style at Cal that would not translate against bigger defenders. At 6'6" in the ACC, you have to either be able to shoot or have some ball skills.

And I could also cite guys like Joseph Uchebo, who couldn't get off the bench on an NIT Pitt team but went on to post 13 points and 11.5 rebounds per game at another D1 school. There are plenty of examples in that direction, too. It's a crap shoot even with bringing in mid-major guys, much less D2 guys.

We have enough spots open where we can take one of two flyers, so I'm not completely condemning anything at this point. But we better get some guys in here who have some pretty obvious allure.

Uchebo isnt a good example because he was making a multi-year recovery from a catastrophic knee injury.

Okay... Sterling Smith. Rafael Maia. Trey Zeigler (produced at TCU, but still not at his CMU levels). Nike Sibande last year. Dan Oladapo. Corey Manigault. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Obviously some drop-off is to be expected, but, again, this dude is playing above the rim at 6'6" at Cal. He won't be able to do that here.

So let me get this straight. A D2 player who none of us have ever seen is ACC league average in your opinion. However, aren’t you the same person who over the years has branded numerous Pitt players that actually played games in the.. ACC … as “NEC or D2 level”?

Yes.

I think Alston is an 8 and 5 guy here.

And I was right about everyone I said was NEC or D2 level.

It goes something like this:

D2 All-American = all-conference NEC/low major = above average mid-major player = average P6 player.
