In football and basketball, we have dynasty programs, a lot of Pitt fans want either Capel or Narduzzi fired and some post things like got to be bad coaching and others post got to be bad talent. So what is it? Is it Saban that draws the talent to Alabama or is it the school named Alabama that draws the talent there, or is it coach k that draws the talent to Duke or is it the school named Duke that draws the talent there, if either of these coaches left their schools and came to Pitt to coach their respective sports football and basketball, would Pitt get the talent that these 2 schools get? What do you think?

In basketball, its 80%-90% the HC. The name of the school (unless its a blue blood) matters very little.

Will Wade has the charisma of a beige wall and the coaching acumen of a sausage, yet he recruits like a champion. It is clearly not 80-90% the head coach unless you believe the head coach is the one handing out bags. Do you think Will Wade's secret talent is that he's an entrepreneur who self finances LSU basketball?

I mean as in the HC is responsible for getting players by any means.

For a short period of time at Pitt winning Fb & Bb games became very important to the people who matter . Think those in the know didn’t understand what was going on with the Golden Panthers ?

Can you win without without an active booster group and a administration that looks the other way , well JD ran about as clean of a program as you can and he was a winner at his time at Pitt . While still a tournament team it’s undeniable that Pitt was fading from national prominence duriing JDs last five yrs . His recruiting made a reemergence to his former heights seem highly unlikely. Could they have lured a big name coach to Pitt after JD ? Well it’s prudent to remember that the highest profile hire in Pitt Bb history was one Paul Evans and guess who was second , so I doubt it!

Everything starts at the top and those people believe it or not place academics and reputation ahead of winning Fb and Bb games ...go figure !

ps ... Look at the Fb program, does anyone believe that PN will ever win big at Pitt and they keep giving him contact extensions . Enough said .

Definitely a mix IMO. I think if you plop Saban at Pitt, he will bring in some better players, but he is not going to have the success he does at Bama. And vice versa if you put Narduzzi at Bama.

I mean, look at Chryst. Everyone complained about him here at Pitt, but he is doing a pretty good job at Wisconsin because Wisconsin football has better support and cache than Pitt overall.

Same with basketball, although I do think the coach carries a little more cache. There may be programs that pop up that aren't your typical "top programs" similar to what Pitt did for the 2000s, but for the most part, Kentucky, Duke, UNC, etc will recruit themselves. Sure they may have some down years, but they typically don't last long.

I disagree , if you hired Saban and his staff and made all the changes he’d require to come to Pitt , in this dream scenario , he turn Pitt Fb around in 2 yrs and win a natIonal championship within 4 yrs . Heinz Field would be sold out and donations would be at all time highs . Talks about an on campus stadium would become serious . Don’t worry though it will never happen !

PN would be fired at Bama after the first yr no matter how much money was left on his contract .

100% TRUTH, Pitt is like the Pirates, enjoy the corporate welfare but does not want to spend what it takes just field teams to rub elbows only. Eggheads still run Pitt and most of them do not like the attention sports gets etc. Pitt could really have a nice front porch to the University if it wanted , it does not

Football recruiting is a thousand percent different than basketball. The name of the program matters much more in football. In bball, it basically doesn't matter at all. The HC and/or bags of cash are all that really matter

Combining football and basketball is honestly a mistake because the difference is so vast. Football basically is revenue = talent = wins. Very few teams deviate from the formula and there is nothing that makes us a great exception beyond any standard deviation.

Pitt can win more in basketball though. We've seen it of course, in both flashes and one sustained period over. We'll be back again, either with this head coach or another.

Sustained success requires a solid foundation. Meaning a commitment from the university to excel. This starts with facilities, hirings, salaries, and other necessary investments. The Chief Egghead in the Cathedral has to want and demand it and sell it to the other eggheads and tweeds and negative Nellies. It is about attitude demonstrated by action. Fans will answer that piper's call.

After that, there are many formulas to becoming a perennial top-20 CFB team or a usual suspect for March Madness. By that I mean, your coach might be a master recruiter or gameday whiz (probably not both). Maybe you perfect a unique style of play or become an incubator of players at certain positions. Maybe you create a crazy, fun gameday environment. Pitt has dabbled on the fringes of all of these.

What you don't do is settle for mediocrity. Because if all you want to do is participate, you will never go higher.

It takes a commitment from both the fanbase and the administration.

I don't disagree. But this is not exactly chicken or egg first. The administration is the custodian of the product that the fans will consume. You can't expect fans to shower good money on crap.
