I will talk about this on today's podcast and you might already know some of these numbers, but in case you don't...
Pitt has had 8 quarterbacks taken in the NFL Draft all-time.
Tom Savage in 2014 (HOU, 4)
Alex Van Pelt in 1993 (PIT, 8)
Dan Marino in 1983 (MIA, 1)
Rick Trocano in 1981 (PIT, 11)
Matt Cavanaugh in 1978 (NE, 2)
Ken Lucas in 1966 (PIT, 18)
Corny Salvaterra in 1957 (PIT, 17)
Pete Neft in 1956 (PIT, 23)
First of all, 8 is not a very big number. And it's even worse if you narrow things down to the current draft structure: only 3 of those 8 were drafted in the top 7 rounds (Savage, Marino and Cavanaugh).
Three in 82 drafts. Admittedly, in some of the early years, Pitt - like the NFL - was running offenses that didn't exactly feature quarterbacks as we think of them now, but still, that's an absurdly low number. As is the fact that Savage was the first Pitt QB drafted in the top 7 rounds since Marino - a 31-year delay. And even if we take off the "round 7" filter, it's still remarkable that only one Pitt QB was drafted between Marino and Savage.
So when Nate Peterman gets selected this weekend - no matter what round he goes in - it will be pretty notable.
