The Duzz

Coach gets a mulligan this year. Panthers gave too much respect to the Navy along with being outcoached and outplayed. Not knocking coach but it's his first rodeo as head man and they didn't look ready to go all out today. Hope to see a much better team next year!
They weren't ready for Miami either

It doesnt always have to be poor coaching. The talent level of the players must be considered.

Also, you really must have played or know the game well to know how hard that offense is to defend. Especially considering how good that QB is.

Here's what I hope didn't happen!
We were unprepared for two games Miami and Navy.
It was reported on this board that coach Narduzzi helping MSUs Dantonio on how to beat Iowa?
I hope he's not still assisting Dantonio and not paying enough attention to PITT. Big stakes for MSU but in his position equally large stakes for PITT.

If you give PN a Mulligan, then Souf wants you to give Jamie one

Very fair comment and I found it a disappointment much like the Miami Game.

It is not all on the New Head Coach, or Interim OC, or New QB & the Players.

It is on rebuilding a Program that needs more talent, more stability of keeping Head Coach & his Staff, as well as Players that have to Execute better the Game Plans.

Pitt had it chances of beating Miami and Navy as well as Iowa and UNC! They started off poor dropping passes, throwing interceptions, and missing 3rd Downs and Kicks making mistakes!

At the same time, credit has to be given to the Players & Coaches of Navy, Miami, UNC and Iowa whose Players did cause turnovers, and made the difference in winning and losing.

Still, without a doubt the Pitt Program under Chancellor Gallagher, Scott Barnes and Coach Pat Narduzzi is good hands and they all are on the same page to improve the Pitt Program and make Pitt a Top 25 Program.

What was really refreshing to see is a Bowl Sold Out fill with Pitt Fans in the Stands!

I see nothing but upside even with a tougher schedule next year!

So Little Down & So Much More To Do, But It Will Get Done!
Conner Strong!!
PITT IS IT Too!!!

Navy is 11-2, Iowa 12-1, UNC, 10-2, Miami 8-5, and ND 10-2! All with Stable Coaching Staffs that have been there for 5 years or more!

Lets give credit to those Coaches, Players, & Programs too!

Next year is even tougher, Clemson and Oklahoma State have almost everyone back including their QBS!

Penn State, UNC, Miami, and Duke are Recruiting in the Top 25 and have Very Good Coaches.

Virginia Tech, Virginia, and Cuse have New Coaches with QBs back, and even Georgia Tech has many Players back and with their QB and they are usually great when experienced under Coach Johnson.

Even Marshall is no gimme win either?

Pitt loses Boyd and has another New OC and that will need time to adjust again.

Up to Coach Narduzzi to meet even a bigger and tougher challenge in 2016, and he did do well in 2015!

You're going to tell me Navy has more talent than Pitt? Pitt had a month to prepare and it's not like this team hasn't faced the triple option. They play Georgia Tech every year.

I wouldn't say that, but they had far more experienced players JR and SR Players, a stable 5+ Years Coaching Staff that has been coaching them the last 4 years, a Sr. QB known to beat another 10 Teams and some Ranked Teams and played at Home where they lost Zero games this year??

I remember after the Georgia Tech game Narduzzi saying something along the lines of (I assume jokingly) throwing the tapes of the defense from that game in the garbage because they aren't going to see that $#!+ for the rest of the year. Well guess what? Pitt got matched up against the one other team in division I football that that runs that "$#!+".

It concerned me when he said it, because it reminded me of Wannstedt similarly dissmissed the triple option as a gimmick that will eventually fail on its own over the course of the game via various miscues in the backfield. It wasn't until Navy punched Pitt in the teeth a few times that Wannstedt brought in Phil Bennet, who had much more experience defending against option attacks, as they were much more common at a number of the smaller Texas schools, and learned that more significant changes to his base defense were needed than he thought. Pitt faired significantly better in games against Navy's option going forward from that point.

I hope Narduzzi isn't too stubborn to be open to more option specific adjustments vs teams that run it, because as long as Paul Johnson is at Georgia Tech, Pitt is going to see it every year.

First off Narduzzi is not helping MSU in any way shape or form. Secondly no one on this defensive staff had any experience going up a triple option team and it showed. Where I get frustrated why aren't the Pitt coaches looking at how other teams defend the triple option they have to get better

1. There was a Detroit Free Press article quoting Duzzi as saying Dantonio called him to pick his brain about Iowa. We're talking about a couple of phone calls, not Duzzi flying to EL to sit and watch film with the MSU staff. Such info sharing in the coaching brotherhood happens at every program all the time and it had absolutely ZERO impact on Duzzi's prep of his own team for any game. To suggest otherwise is idiotic.
2. Everyone on this staff faced the triple option against GT. What we didn't face all year was Keenan Reynolds running the triple option.
3. What makes you think the coaches don't watch game film of other teams defending Navy? I'm sure they spent countless hours as a staff picking Navy film to pieces. That's what they do for every single opponent. In this case they had way more time than usual to study and prepare.
4. I think a lot of posters/fans have an inflated idea of how good this team actually was this year-we were improved from last year but we were never a top 25 caliber team. The better team all year-in the Vegas books and on the football field--won this game today. This is still Pitt. Our problems can't be fixed in one season and we have a long way to go before we're legit again. I like Duzzi a lot, I think he can and will get it done if he means what he says about staying at Pitt for the long haul.

He's just getting his feet wet dude.
I know, and I think we're in a much better place than a year ago but today was not pretty, and not the first time we didn't answer the bell until after halftime. Hope he can stock the cupboard in February because we need help quick at a number of positions.

Yes, yes, yes and YES! People really need to take #4 to heart. This isn't a quick fix. Pitt managed to win some of the close ones that went down to the wire (GT & SU) and that made the difference between 6 wins and 8 wins. Its entirely possible that we take a step back next year. We just have to step it up in recruiting.

Good posts! Interesting, does anyone think Coach Pat will talk to Coach Dantonio onb some of his thoughts on beating Penn State next year????? Gee, Coaches talk to each other, been going on a long long time, Knute Rockne and Jock Sutherland regularly had discussion in their day!

He did help Dantonio prior to MSU vs Iowa that was well publized. We played Iowa tough and he offered so consultation to his former boss.

His expectations aren't gradual is all.
It's not an on ramp .
I think getting us 8 wins for the first time since The Stache left is a reasonable result for year 1, especially with Conner out all year. I don't think it was some minor miracle like the usual slappies tend to portray it, but I do think Duzzi did a good job in year 1. We weren't great this year, but we were improved, we took a step forward. I expect it to keep moving in that direction as long as Dooz sticks around, but there will be hiccups. This program has been marginal for a long time. Chryst left it in better shape than he found it, but it certainly wasn't like Dooz was handed the keys to some kind of Ferrari here. More like a F-150.

Badby with solid posts on this thread.

I think an F-150 is pushing it to be honest.

I disagree. Navy was ready for Pitt like this was the national championship game - stellar game plan, and they were the better team, not for lack of Pitt effort but because of their offensive game plan.

Pitt players were playing hard, talking and working on the sidelines, cheering their teammates on from before the opening kickoff.

Pitt worked hard that whole game. They just didn't have enough guns. "The other team gets paid too" is one of my favorite sports sayings and even in amateur events, you get what I mean.

Kudos to Navy with an 11 win season - clearly a very good, experienced football team who gave us more than our boys could handle. They were simply a better team yesterday, and not because of any "not ready to play" character stuff.

That is almost laughable. Stellar game plan??? They have the same game plan every game for 50 years. Do you mean because they added the half back pass??

I agree the QB won this game... everything else being equal, Pitt beats Navy 9 times out of 10

I could not disagree more. They threw WAY more than Pitt anticipated, Pitt guys were even saying that after the game.
They threw lots and lots of offensive set looks at Pitt too, lots more pre-snap movement, lots more off-cadence counts.and again, Pitt guys were saying a lot of that stuff wasn't in any film they watched. I would say I have rarely seen a team add so many new looks to a bowl game.

I think Navy anticipated this game with a great deal of respect for Pitt and figured out ways to handle us.

passing more... yes, they did. I dont think Pitt's game plan was bad at all. Our offense didnt execute. Defensively, we knew we wouldnt be able to stop them, no one has been able to. We needed to score more points against a poor Navy defense. We didnt

I even saw an empty set or two from Navy, I think on one of them we called a time out - WTF, what option team runs an empty set? They worked it.
