Competitors compete and play to win. Think the bowl game was meaningless to the players today? If it were meaningless, they wouldn't keep score. Come to think of it, even every practice has meaning: getting better, learning the plays, formations, etc. and your role in them, determining your position on the depth chart, etc., coaches making evaluations, etc.
