I f-ing love stories like this. Many Pitt fans would crucify our staff if we played a guy like that, let alone gave him a key role.

10 catches, 92 yards, 2 TDs. In the National Title game... against freaking Alabama.

Against Pitt, he had seven receptions for 77 yd, no scores. A good, solid game....but he came to play even better when it counted the most.

I don't think Pitt fans would act that way. Very few players are loved more by the fans than George Aston and he probably had worse offers than that. Now if you want to build your team relying on those guys at multiple positions...then ya, I would be pissed.

They should have thrown one of those quick outs to him on either 3rd or 4th down. Bad playcall, but glad they played it the way they did.
Yep. IMHO, the way that Clemson best Alabama is that they finally decided to focus on doing what the did best: throwing the ball. Their receivers - all of 'em - came up big in the second half.

I'll give you props there. George Ashton's name immediately came to my mind when I read the part where Pittfans would crucify our staff if we'd play a guy like that.

True
And the Clemson QB is the best player in CFB

QB was hands down player of the game and Williams was obviously best receiver ... Watson made sick throws against good coverage.
The small speedy receiver was effective against big aggressive dbacks playing man to man coverage

I would almost assure as a fullback in his situation that he had less offers. Agree though, the fans get mad when Pitt fills up recruiting classes with guys with few offers. If one of them turns into a real player tho, or better yet a walk-on does, it becomes a great story.

Maybe at first people would cringe at how little depth we must have to play a lowly recruited walk-on. If he proved himself though, he'd be the guy on saturdays everyone wants to see succeed.

Yep. But what is your point? If we recruit all our kids that Wofford and Presbyterian recruits, you know what we become? Wofford and Presbyterian.
My point is that ... if a national champion can have a walk on play a key role in winning the title, maybe the 3rd best offensive player on the field for Clemson last night, that Pitt fans shouldnt be so condescending toward the one or two 2 star players that occassionally make the roster.

The other point is that I love when the self-appointed recruiting "gurus" are 100% wrong about a kid.

It is why an Antonio Brown ends up at Central Michigan...and a Ben Roethlisberger ends up at Miami of Ohio.

I agree with the latter comment. But as far as the "2 star", well there are always nice stories. But when you have a bunch of them playing say in a Defensive Backfield, well you have what we had this year.

somehow I see this kid catching passes from a 44 year old Tom Brady somewhere down the line.

The diffetence being of course.....that clemson invited him to walk on

Pitt otoh.....would have offered him after 10 minutes of evaluation at a summer camp ( see paul chryst)

And while Renfro hit it big.....too many are in over their heads....just look at our defense and the offers these guys had.

The Patriots have Edelman and Amendola on the roster at the same time.... they can work with Switzer and Renfro on the roster at the same time.
Edelman and Amendola are getting expensive. Belichick has been known to get rid of players a year early if it means getting something back for them, and replacing them with younger, less expensive talent.

He probably wasn't good enough to play for PITT??
+ we landed some 4 stars during this period who didn't work out.
Ben Bollwar ( however its spelled) was also up for grabs since he wasn't a highly ranked recruit. We could have used him but he wasnt PITT material not good enough??
Similar story for the "midget" ( cant think of his name) UNC punt returner /receiver who scored a lot of TD's while playing PITT. He wasn't PITT football material either.
We PITT have high standards for our recruits just look at the PITT DB's and linebackers??

The "midget" that you're referring to is Ryan Switzer. He's a Charleston, West Virginia native. He had some nice offers, including WVU, the Nits, Duke, Vandy, Georgia Tech, Washington, Northwestern, Florida State, and Purdue. There was Pitt interest, but no - no offer.

George Aston would have won two national championships last night.

Before Renfro, Clemson had Adam Humphries, a 2* DB out of Spartanburg, SC who was turned into a posession receiver and is now doing quite nicely on Sunday afternoons with Tampa Bay

Not only that, but "Ben Bollwar" was a 4 star, national top 200 player with a big time offer sheet. I'm sure that, as with Switzer, our friend Buffy just assumed since Boulware was a somewhat undersized white kid he must have been a lowly recruit. Meanwhile these guys had better offer sheets than all but a handful of Pitt signees over the past 15 years.....You know that they say about assuming....

I think Buff needs to spend more time at his day job making America great again.
