just listened to a big chunk of it and I really enjoyed it. He can really be engaging and I really felt myself wanting to sit down and have a beer with him. When the dust settles, I’d love to get him in a pub far away from a Pittsburgh, likely in a small minor league town after he watched his son play baseball and when he’s 6 million $$ richer.

The guy knows his basketball. But he’s an average coach at best it seems and is less than average here.

Some takeaways from the show—

NCAA runs—
Virginia—is a great team but their style of limiting possessions lends itself to potentially being upset by a lesser team in the NCAA tourney. Sound familiar?

UNC is capable. A lot depends on luke Maye, as he’s a match up problem for teams like Luther was before he got hurt.

Duke—playing lots of zone now which will make it tough for them if they run into a hot shooting team.

On Pitt moving forward—

Wilson frame—needs to get more fit. He’s strong and will always be strong. But needs to drop a few pounds and get quicker.

Stewart—needs to work on finding spots to get better shots...and to work on getting his shot off quicker, and to get his shot better under duress.

Carr—mysteriously gained weight as the season went on. Needs to drop weight.

Brown—I can’t remember what he said specifically. He feels that Brown is going to get better and better and have a good career. I think he said that he needs to keep his motor high.

Stevenson-has the ability to do it all. But he hasn’t embraced the things needed to improve his game when he doesn’t have the ball, like the physical part of the game and defense.

Peace-needs a red shirt. Just behind as a player.

George-same thing but probably doesn’t have one. Hard worker.

Kene- needs to be able to slow the game down and play like he does in practice.

Luther-just stay healthy and he can have a huge year next year. He’s a match up problem for other teams.

And if I got him in a bar, I’d ask him about his regrets...and why he let Corey and Ro go.

I know people who have seen him in Cupka's. Apparently he's not very friendly and walks in with his nose in the air. I've also had multiple people tell me he's an a**hole, so not sure you'd get very far with him.

BTW, I hear parts of his show often on the way home and this was the most upbeat and engaging he's been in a while. I actually thought to myself that maybe they've come to an agreement and he's happy.

I don't know him and don't want to know him. And I don't know anyone who knows him. So I'm just going by his demeanor on the court and what I see of him at games. What I see isn't very likeable at all.

This is similar to the stories out of Nashville/Vandy.

Hopefully.

I agree with you that he was very upbeat, almost jovial, tonight more so than any show this year. But his mood, and my own fears, made me think the opposite of you in that I felt that he could only be that happy if he was told that he is going to get another year. I hope your read is better than mine.

He can’t be happy here. Just can’t. I’m with Gunga on this.

When I was in school Jackie Sherrill was the HC at Pitt and he eat lunch at Scaaf Hall everyday and anyone who has seen him will tell you he had a permanent scowl on his face and sat by himself . One of my buds when over and sat down and had a conversation with him and found him friendly and engaging . You just don’t know until you interact with someone .
I had several interactions with JD at Greentree , he always seemed to stand next to me up there . He also was engaging and enjoyed talking about the new players . Thought John Johnson was going to be special , no ones right 100% of the time !

A good friend of mine was at Pitt 10 years before me. When he was there, he ran intramurals in some capacity. He tells the story of having to go to Foge and then Jackie regarding use of the stadium field. He said Foge was not friendly...and Sherill was accommodating. Who would have guessed that?

Yeah, it was weird. Your thought briefly crossed my mind, but there's just no way they keep him. It think he's in his happy place with an agreement in hand.

Do you think that he would want to go through another year like this?

While I don't have any particular desire to interact with Stallings, I was also in school when Jackie was HC.
A friend and I used to run on the track the Fieldhouse at lunch. Afterwards, on several occasions, we played 2 on 2 pick up b-ball w/ Jackie and another coach.

Although Jackie grew up dirt poor in Mississippi, played for the Bear at Bama, and looked a like Clint Eastwood on a bad day, he was totally cool and very normal. He even let me shove him a little without cryin'. BTW he was a great coach, and Narduzzi is the first coach since then who reminds me even a little of Jackie.

I had heard similar in regards to Foge

FWIW, I have had the opportunity to interact with Stallings on multiple occasions and can honestly tell you that I really enjoyed him. He was friendly, engaging and personable. Seems like a great husband and father and obviously loves talking about Jacob, who is a great guy too.

Clearly Pitt is no longer a good fit for him, but he sure seemed to be pretty engaging and friendly to me.

I’ve caught bits of some of his radio shows. I got the feeling he’s like that professor we’ve all had with the giant homeless beard who LOVES his material so much, and knows more than 99.9% of the world, but can’t really seem to teach you much of anything, then half the class fails his exams.

I push back against the narrative that he’s a terrible coach and not trying, because I don’t believe either. I think he’s just lost his magic, and beyond that, Pitt was a terrible fit for what he had to offer. I have no doubt he’d make an awesome associate for some team out there. He just can’t handle the duty of a HC at this point.

I've had the pleasure of talking to coach Stallings multiple times, he's very engaging and likable. I think if most people on this board actually had the opportunity to speak with him they would feel a lot differently about him, but I do think he should be fired

This seems like a textbook case of a guy with a personality that people like when he's winning but can't stand when he's losing. Pretty much sounds like every other coach. OK, OK, everyone hated Paul Evans even when he won.
