Verbal "commitments" are pretty meaningless in college football today --- on both sides. What matters is both parties signing that actual letter.

Joe Paterno was already dead (and obviously not the Head Coach) by the time they signed their LOI in February 2012. These players all committed to Bill O'Brien.
