The Negative PSU Publicity

Was watching the TODAY show in the hotel restaurant this morning, and they talked about teh Keith Olbermann tweets. They showed all of Keith's tweets, but none other rebuttals other than he was suspended because he upset the penn state fan base. It was pretty good anti-pub actually, showing his tweets about the inferior education, and had me laughing. I think this is quite poignant in that it was Keith Olbermann, a scholar among the sportscasting world, from Cornell University, and recognized in the political world. This wasnt Skip Bayless or air head saying this.

I think some of the posters on here that know how little of the THON money actually goes to charities should send Keith some information on that. I remember when I read it it was like... jaw-dropping information for me. Actually sickened me to know that so little of teh money raised goes to help people. I dont remember the actual numbers, but if you want to give to childhood cancer, give to Alex's Lemonade Stand, or St. Judes.

I still think its interesting given that KO didnt call out raising money for THON, he called out the "look at me" culture around it. Would be like me walking down the street after giving $5 to the Ronald McDonald House Charities and screaming down the street "Look at me. I donated. Take that other people. This was all me!" Thats sadly how THON really comes off in addition to the money going to benefit Penn State rather than charities like Alex's Lemonade Stand (http://www.alexslemonade.org/grants) that provides funding to families as well as awards grants to research projects that have potential progress to any research and cancer center.

Olbermann was just expressing what everybody knows - no matter how PED STATE tries to SPIN IT they are enablers - a cult of SanduskyJoeBots and even raising a little money will not mask the crime. TOO bad they don't receive the death penalty in Football which is the least that scum bag Paterdo and his enabling Family deserve. Where is the Justice - enablers are going to enable.

I think Olbermann is right this time but regardless of where he went to school he's a screeching lunatic.

Olbermann had a highly negative "Q Score" in 2011

So I think saying that Olbermann is "a scholar among the sportscasting world, from Cornell University, and recognized in the political world. This wasn't Skip Bayless or air head saying this" is rather overstating Olbermann's public perception.

I don't hate Olbermann, but it's going to be a bit tough to spin this as "good anti-pub" for Penn State given that Olbermann's public perception stunk even before this.

Positive score of 10, Negative score of 42

Well, I do agree, and being in Nashville I know about Skip... but, he is certainly "not a smart man" as forest gump would say. Vandy is a great school for sure, didnt mean to imply it wasnt.

Re: Olbermann had a highly negative "Q Score" in 2011

hah... OK, I do agree with your rebuttal. But I did say "in the sportscasting world", which is like being valedictorian of your summer school.

I do think Olbermann is thought of as an intelligent, though political leaning, man. That was my point, you can say his public perception stinks... but I would disagree with that. He is thought of like any political voicebox, loved by one side and hated by the other. You guys are just on the opposite edge of this one.

I do think that his tweets were probably meant to be funny or cynical at first, and when it continued, certainly was a grounds for suspension, just as if I tweeted out highly inflammatory and derogatory blurbs, and I am just an engineer... people should just refrain from that on social media. The woman from PSU that started this was highly immature as well, and unprofessional, no doubt, and if she worked for my company, I am sure I would be talking to her now with HR just to get her to realize that things like that should not happen in the professional world. That being said, part of KO's persona is to incite these types of reactions, so his job description is certainly different from mine. But it was to a school... not a race... not a sexual orientation.. not to a religion (which commonly gets these type of tweets or posts). So, at the end of the day, PSU is just being overly sensitive to a ramblings of KO.

What Keith Olbermann Should Have Done

What KO should have done is donate $5 to some random charity, went out and bought balloons with letters that spelled out "Olbermann", trademarked "WE ARE OLBERMANN", put "WE ARE OLBERMANN" all over social media including Twitter, maybe take a billboard out as well, etc.

PSU fans likely would still have missed the point, but thats not shocking. Would have kept Olbermann out of some troubles (PSU fans would probably still try to get him fired and maybe sue him), but the point would have been directly addressed in a more tactful manner for what he wanted to get across.

Re: What Keith Olbermann Should Have Done

Very Stephen Colbertish... I like it.

In fact, I can see that happening if his show was still on.

I'm currently managing (at work) a brilliant but very erratic 20-something

Smart as a whip. Very high potential to be highly impactful in our industry. Also apt at creating firestorms both internally and with our client, because of his (a) lack of filter, and (b) complete inability to recognize what fights are worth fighting (and which aren't).

I'm getting increasingly frustrated --- he's going to derail his whole career-path. Just last fall, I did the "go home for the rest of this week, don't come into the office, paid suspension bit" with him. But I cannot coach him on his "weak points" forever, I cannot fight internally with my bosses on his behalf forever.

I honestly like Olbermann --- but it's the same damn thing. I agree with you, Olbermann's first tweet wasn't that bad. That he then "doubled down" with later Tweets, though, ugh. I honestly put the odds at 30-70 that Olbermann doesn't even come back next week, that his ESPN career is done. I think his reputation is borderline-irreparable now (he is 56 w/ a career-full of these situations). Sad case. Honestly hope my direct report doesn't go down this path, at least he's in his 20s, time is on his side.

Re: I'm currently managing (at work) a brilliant but very erratic 20-something

Well, honestly... I love 20 somethings like this on my team. I can handle the face to the customer and the managing of these guys and girls, and they stay under the radar and create awesome stuff. I wouldnt control your employee too much, other of course to let him know certain outburst could get him fired by HR. I had a engineer I brought with me over 3 jobs and 8 years that is an absolute genius, probably like your employee... firestorms come, but that is due to being highly passionate over what they do. You need to feed that. Just control it though, it will be far better for your company than to muzzle him. Basically these guys and girls are best suited for R&D type positions, let their minds not focus and think outside the box, then you being the manager put all those thoughts into a box for them.

If they wanted to help kids, they would pay their $60 mill fine.

That's what Keith should have tweeted and it would have helped kids in Pennsylvania.

Their efforts are commendable but it really isn't helping kids directly. The money would be better spent helping families travelling to the hospital and paying for hotel stays or actually paying for care.

Bashing the Peds has become commonplace and somewhat fashionable.
Last season I think Rutgers and Maryland? apologized for their fans behavior.

If the 3 enablers ever go to trial or the Clery fines are announced it will start up all over again.

Couldn't happen to a more deserving fan base

Yep, agree --- gotta just keep him "under the radar" as much as I can

latest example (a few weeks ago) was him going-off unprompted, criticizing some higher-ups work to them, using incredibly rough and blunt language in doing so and having everything "documented" because he put in it e-mail.

If we had a 1-on-1 and he just told ME that: no problemo. I get it, I will readily serve as a venting board and help devise a constructive solution (if one exists).

I do like managing young talented bucks --- it's always interesting! My ultimate job in managing them is to help them transition from "young and talented" to "middle-age, even-more-talented, well-respected and doing-very-well financially and personally in our industry" types.

Not all of them get there though.

I'm kind of wrong.I believe they have made 2 of five payments.

Sorry for my error on that one.

Simply not true

Penn State paid $12MM in each of January 2013, January 2014, and January 2015 into an escrow account. That is in full compliance with the Consent Decree.

That money ($36MM in total) has yet to be distributed, that is true. The distribution "logjam" is because of the Corman/NCAA lawsuit. Now that that is cleared up, the $ should begin to be distributed soon (likely this spring).

My bad. You are correct. The money NOT getting to kids is beyond PSU's

control.

My original thought came from when PSU bought a new scoreboard and signage resulting in University loaning money to Athletics.

I stand corrected.

he can be a screeching lunatic. And he get's in a lot of hot water for calling out pompous hypocritical dickwads in public forums.

Re: Yep, agree --- gotta just keep him "under the radar" as much as I can

Sounds like this guy has an opinion of himself that is greatly higher than warranted. He has to learn that he isn't always right and when he is he has to learn how to convey it.

I guess he does sound like KO.

Reply

He is a political and sports commentator...and is paid highly to provoke and cause dust-ups like this. KO has never had a tough time getting a job [and has had many stops along his career path]...and regardless of what happens...he will find another place once the ESPN gig ends. Guys like him have people that follow him because they love him...and even more that follow him because they hate him. Both groups tune in and watch or listen...which is the point in the media business. The cult may have power...but if you think you are going to cause KO to be unemployed and jobless...you've taken on a bit more than even the cult can accomplish. Hail to Pitt!

Although I do fault Olbermann, (Also Known As Doberman), for being foolish and acting on a level that caused him to stoop to an inferior level to himself.

It is as one is at a Game, and the some other fans are drunk or very immature and start harassing you because you are wearing the other Teams Colors? If you want to enjoy the game, one can ignore it, move, or smile, but to confront or respond in the same way, will not stop it, just escalate it. Olbermann should know better at some point but Dr. Von Yinzer said it best, Olbermann gravitates, engages, and sometime starts that kind of confrontation, as his signature or moniker for the limelight and that is just as fair.

The bigger problem is for Penn State University and the fan base, legislature, and image. Instead of moving on and showing all the Reforms that made Penn State University a beacon on Children Abuse with College, State, and Federal Laws, Compliance and Regulations. as well as, the changes made to make sure no Football Coach or University President will ever be above such Laws and the Trustees being kept in the dark, these efforts have becoming deleted in the public as the Campaigns to support the past crimes to children is paramount on some Trustees, Former Players, and Alumni Contributors Fan agendas.

All this will do will invite more scrutiny, future investigations, and rally Investigative Reporting within the Media, bring out malcontents that are never satisfied on anything anywhere, and reveal the email, phone calls, and future prosecution of illegal bullying by Penn State Fan Base that has been well documented on Rivals when they attacked many websites.

In time, the THON will be investigated and Penn State Higher Ups will have to deal with that due to this current behavior. Right now, the Political Powers in Harrisburg and the Commonwealth have come to the aid of Penn State University due to the fear that not to do so can result in lost elections.

This works in the short run, but can become a blowback in the long run especially where elections take place. Politicians tend to gravitate towards the limelight that makes the media or stirs within the bonfires of the people but those are temporary responses and never burn out faster than living on in longevity.

For example, on PBS last night was another great series on "Italians" and where an American Italian named Generoso Pope rose to Millionaire Status and went into Publishing and supported Mussolini Rise to Power in Italy and making sure admiration for El Duce was also a big part of Italian-Americans Culture. It worked for a few years, even having President Roosevelt back off from criticizing Italy's invasion of Ethiopia and America did nothing as Pope made sure 20,000 Italian-Americans came out to support Mussolini as a warning to Roosevelt for an upcoming election?

Yet, Roosevelt later met with Pope and told him to cut it out, then Pearl Harbor happen and Italian-Americans became just Americans all of a sudden. Many of the very best and powerful American-Italians were investigated for their previous support of El Duce and his Fascists Organizations. They could not erase how they used yesterday to be elected, and the values changed for today was unkind and justifications became never minds!

All of a sudden, support disappeared as new competitors appeared, the Mussolini taint even if it did not apply to them, ended any comeback, and these Leaders were marginalized. Even very great American Politicians of Italian decent were hurt by such activities no matter how much they tried to explain to the public later they had nothing to do with fascists.

This is what is going to happen at Penn State University eventually. I predict Senator Corman as well. Today this very good Public Servant is a local hero but he just put a target on his back to get there.

The Truth Crushed Into The Earth Will Only Rise Again! Twitter is not protected speech and everything is recorded and can be used in court. The Vanderbilt Players convicted of Rape were done in by their Cell phones text and the Text of their friends in California? This awaits many at Penn State and people like Olbermann don't let up, they just dig deeper, than those that thought they could go lower than him? They can be traced and held accountable and if any Public Official does it, they are in even deeper trouble using their Public Office when that is exposed, and these things cannot be erased as many think?

Even worse, the very people that say don't worry we will be there for you will abandon you in a minute, as soon as a hint of you misusing state resources or violating privacy of citizens scandal develops around you. House of Cards now on Netflix, is just a remake of the same show made in England, and that was based on facts, not fictions.

First off, this is not helping Penn State in anyway and the CULTure cannot see it, but the those with more smarts should see that but prefer to seek their own fame. Penn State University had a very tough time even attracting a great Candidate to become President and Athletic Director and could not keep O'Brien, which everyone knows was a great coach. The old President, AD, and Trustees turned to Franklin and his recruiting has quieted the fan base for a while.

However, the New Trustees led by Lubrano-Doran Money Contributors, Jubelirer-Political Relationship With Legislature and Judges, and the Paternos are an Axis that will end up doing even more harm to Penn State. These are good people thinking they have a mission to leading bring back Penn State and their campaigns that nothing was ever wrong Penn State is built on half-truths and uncovered lies that cannot be sustained. They like Pope are good people doing bad things in what they think is a noble cause to save their shamed Alma Mater!

Yet, there are others including Investigators and political competitors waiting for power in the Judiciary, Legislature and Electorate ranks, that sit and wait until their allies reveal things that can bring any sham down when they choose?

I respect all these people too that truly believe in what they are doing is a noble cause but there is no nobility where Child Abuse, Molestation, by the Penn State Founder of The Second Mile Penn State Alumnus, Penn State Coach, Penn State Professor Emeritus Employee. The fact is Gerry Sandusky was protected by the Silence, Secrets and Scandals that built Penn State Football will prevail in tell all books, publications, and documentaries.

I loved Bill Cosby Humor, all my life, but even he is now subject to allegations harder to harder to defend against that happen 50 years ago and recently now in a Lawsuit, this is the same fate for those they think they can save Penn State Name from the Shame that happen there?

The Penn State CULTure will then respond as they have been doing and someone like a Junk-Yard Doberman will expose both sides mistake, dealings, and quiet manipulation for their personal crusade purposes regardless of their personal belief they were promoting and defending what they loved, Penn State.

Just like Pope as an Italian-American defended Mussolini rise and then only shame remain on those that joined him, and competitors' retributions ruled the masses of public outcries no public relations could refute?

No matter if Franklin wins a National Championship the Penn State faithful will be mocked by the loser and there are more of them than any winners in any one year. We already saw it in last year's Rutgers Game, there are always crazies within every fan base that act just like the CULTure on BWI that has chased away their Best & Brightest Posters on their Boards leaving only the Dumb and Dumbers!

There is a bigger dead reconkening coming because Paterno's 46 Years of building the Penn State Football Program and the 14 Years of the Cover Up, with additional 40 Years more of Penn State Professor Emeritus, Coach, and Alumnus Sandusky's happen at the same time.

What few know right now, and many think is going away, but in fact, it is just getting starter. People like Keith Olbermann, Sara Ganim, David Jones,, and Sally Jenkins are already writing more as we speak, tracing the Penn State "Come-Wreck" Network.

The Civil Lawsuits Discoveries of the Victims, the Paternos, and Criminal Trials are not close to being over.

There is on-going Judicial Scandal where many not just a few Judges with Prosecutors were using State Computers on State Time for Porn Personal Pleasures, accompanied by horrible Feminine, Gay, and Racists remarks, which no one can defend against from the past. Just showing they just ended the chance to promote a Law School Dean to appointment.

Moreover, the tracing of other emails and phone calls in today's world of twitters, apples, and hard drives come back to haunt anyone at any time. Many thought restoring Paterno's Wins would end much of this acrimony among Penn State Powers, Trustees, Alumni, Political Allies, and Football CULTutre Fans. Unfortunately, they now are just realizing they are wrong, and in time, none of the past is going away, and there much more going on in the present that will come out in the future.

Just as if Hitler, Mussolini, and Tojo thought, they were doing the right, things to change the world, only to have the World stand up and fight and defeat them. Brave new scandals that Penn State Alumni and Fans will be even more ashamed of are happening in the name to save Penn State Football legacy. Time will not heal it or stop it, just confirm it?

One cannot erase Fascists or Communists atrocities over 80 years ago, and no one can bring back Penn State Football Glories of the last 50 years either built with silence, secrecy, and scandals. The books, critics, and media seekers will continue to work on where children were molested and they are alive for the next 5o years as well.

I truly respect Senator Jake Corman but even he will come to regret some terrible things that happen at Penn State that he was involved with today for his political rise. The simple fact remains the longevity of pushbacks, blowbacks, and guilt within some involved as they come closer to their maker, will come out and the slightest allegations can lead to disruptive political accusations.

Media Investigators, Political Opportunists, with Today's Technology will expose new contentions that can manipulate future revelations. For their own gains, just as the New Trustees are doing today. Junk-Yard Dogs do not just go away after one week, they bark all the time, and seek out their own meat to eat, even if denied by their Masters or Employers.

Penn State University Football will without a doubt comeback in wins, championships, and glory on the GridIron! I portend this from day one of this Penn State Scandal Yet, it will never be the same as their faithful think they can recapture with just wins!

Penn State University by their own Alumni and Employees brought stain and shame to Penn State's name by molesting Children brought to their Gate. No organized Political-Alumni-Electorate Campaign can change it, prevent it, and stop it!

How do I know?

Anyone going on BWI, on any day, at any time, can view Penn State CULTure Posters Boards Postings related to the Penn State Scandal more than on College Football.

"They Are" reacting to those like a Olbermann more than cheering their own Players, coaches, and Teams, while condemning Penn State University and supporting the Mussolini's of Yesterdays that will not survive Public Opinion of Tomorrow.

Even the Penn State BWI Banning CULTure Goose Steppers cannot muster to forget what they say never happen at Penn State. They are out to get their own University more than supporting it, and that is not the way to win anything of value in life.

As Abraham Lincoln once quoted from the Bible, "The Truth Crushed Into The Earth Will Only Again!"

Re: 409fold, You Are Correct Sir!

Penn State paid that money right away but put it is Escrow waiting for the Lawsuit to determine the outcome or settlement. The NCAA Error in demanding that money in the first place, when Penn State was happy to give it out throughout Pennsylvania.

Penn State and Jake Corman & Legislators deserves Kudos in my opinion on challenging that aspect of the "SAINTions"!

Re: Simply not true

WOW

What a load of bull that post is.

Sooooo.... Psu doesn't give fund raising money to help fight childhood cancer because of the lawsuits surrounding a psu football coach raping small children????

So the money may be used there?

Whatever $ THON raised has absolutely nothing to do with

the $60MM NCAA fine to Penn State (in terms of actually paying that $60MM, Penn State has always been full compliance with the consent decree).

I think that's what you're getting at, but your post does confuse me a little bit.

Re: Whatever $ THON raised has absolutely nothing to do with

Well the post is about how even more negativity surrounds the horrible persona of penn state.

I believe Keith was misguided for criticizing thon. I dont believe he deserved a suspension over it. He's just saying what many feel about the PSU cult of worship. Cover up Jerrys child sexual abuse because it might make Joe look bad. Dont take Jerry's keys from the lasch because then Joe looks like he knows something, etc, etc. All about protecting Joe's image at the cost of numerous child assaults.

Good. Heaven knows the children of Centre County need counseling desperately.

Apparently, it's not just Pitt or Ohio St. fans who are digusted by the Cult putting Paterno's wins above everything else or claiming they are the real victims. A BWI cult member ventured over to the Nebraska Rivals board to start a thread thanking some random Nebraska resident for defending PSU against Olbermann. The result was not pretty. More Cult members then leave the safety of the McAndrew hive.to share some "FACTS" with the Husker fans.

Much respect to the Hukser fans for dumping all over the Cult's" FACTS." In the end, the Pedsters all agree that Nebraska's image as a classy fan base is a fraud and there is "no intelligent life" on the Nebraska board.

Amazing how the rest of the country views the Cult's depraved nonsense outside the McAndrew hive.

Add Michigan and Rutgers to the list. The cult is disgusting.

Man I am no fan of Ped State but that discourse was telling

ya know Cap is probably right. You act that way and it is only a matter of time.

can you imagine what this board will be like when we have to play these freaks???

anybody who thinks a rivalry with these cultists is worthwhile should read this thread.

Hail to Pitt

Re: Man I am no fan of Ped State but that discourse was telling

Honestly after we beat them down last meeting, we did get some very good pub going. I would rather them actually play us, than add another directional horrible school to pad the wins like they do year after year.
