I think we all realize that the offense is going to have to carry the team moving forward. I also understand that the play calling has been conservative at the end of the game in our most recent losses. But this is a classic case of treating the symptoms and ignoring the disease.
The disease is DEFENSE.
Some of us have lost focus on what's really wrong with the team.
The defense, particularly the DB's is the problem. Minus defensive scores, our offense is averaging nearly 30 points a game. That is more than enough to win games. The all important running game is stout.
The defense is giving up a record amount of yardage. Why? Because Narduzzi's defense is predicated on two things to work; a strong pass rush, and cover corners. Outside of Price, we have little pass rush and our corners can't cover.
What to do?
The most popular solution is to change the defense to suit the personnel that you have. That's not easy to do. In order to do that you would have to change your practice routine and schemes. That includes the younger players. The younger DB's are learning one defense and now you're teaching them something else. Not good.
All you can do is "tweak" the defense you are currently running. Otherwise you set the learning curve of your younger players backwards.
The other popular remedy is burn the red shirts of the DB's. That is a possibility. However, because of their inexperience, will they perform any better? How will that impact the future?
Here it is in a nutshell, the best course of action is:
1. Stay the course on defense and tweak what you can.
2. Be very aggressive on offense and score as much as possible. However when you are averaging 30 points a game, it's hard to blame the offense when your defense is giving up a record number of yards.
3. Burn a redshirt of a freshman DB that can perform even on an average level. (Hamlin or Coleman)
The defense has little talent sans the freshman on this team. It will take a couple of recruiting classes to get to the level needed to run Narduzzi's defense effectively. Chryst did a bad job at recruiting defense.
