The recruiting value with Partridge

Everyone knows he recruits Florida well. Which points to what being a good recruiter is all about.

Many on this board simplistically think a good recruiter is a guy who is a good salesman; a closer with 4-star recruits. Beginning and end of story.

Well, if that's really all there is to it, then location doesn't matter. A guy with that skill set should be able to close with recruits anywhere. Partridge may generally be a good recruiter, but he's especially good in Florida for a reason.

Coaches constantly talk about how recruiting is really about relationships. Partridge has them in Florida, which is why he does well there. Coaches build relationships with HS coaches, trainers and others, and get in early with good recruits, some who are not well known generally. The relationships with these players start early, trust is built, and you can sometimes win recruiting battles against the top schools. When Pitt wins these recruiting battles, the players almost always talk about the trusted relationships they built with coaches.

And Florida is loaded with super talented guys who don't impress on the field until late, but a guy like Partridge will know about them before a lot of other coaches. Michael Smith, who we just signed is a perfect example. Described as "freakishly athletic", he was a bball player who didn't start playing football until his junior year, and in the top FL classification, didn't produce much that year. But he was dominant his senior year, and Pitt somehow was one of the first to notice. He has the potential to be a very big time WR in college.

Partridge will ID more guys like him going forward, even before they blow up in their senior seasons, and will have the inside track on building relationships with kids like this since he is so well known, and apparently, well trusted in south FL.

One thing to note, Partridge joined Pitt right after the Big East raid and the constant concern of the Big East maintaining a seat at the BCS table during that timeframe. Also, by then, Miami had left the Big East so that presence in Florida was gone by northern Big East teams (yeah I know USF but come on.....

Now, with the ACC solidly among (if not topping) most of the conferences, with Miami and FSU as part of the conference, Partridge in a Pitt Tree has so much more to sell these recruits. Plus, despite the Clemson win getting little play up here as the locals continue to fawn over PSU's amazing home win over Ohio State, I am betting down in Florida and the south beat Clemson, AT CLEMSON, gets alot more attention.

So Partridge should have more of a strength to recruit from.

schools matter. Antigua at UK in hoops was voted the best basketball recruiter under calipari, then he got hc job at USF. Amazing how his success in recruiting diminished when he was selling kids to play at USF and not to go to Kentucky and play for Cal.

with that said, pitt football is a good product, so is the ACC, so is our lack of depth at DL, DE. I am excited about this hire.

true, remember how awesome a recruiter everyone thought Teryl Austin was at Michigan?

but I agree, I like this hire as well. With the WPIAL/locals being increasingly hostile towards Pitt, I like mining Florida instead. The gym teachers here hold a grudge if their LB who runs a 4.9 40 doesn't get an offer but yet do nothing to help steer their true stud prospects our way.

I liked Antigua at pitt, coach and player but found it funny when he was voted Best recruiting in college hoops awhile back at Kentucky. There is no easier sell in all of sports. especially since they were turning over 4-5 freshman to the NBA every year. I mean not only do you sell calipari and Kentucky, but you have 4-5 open starting positions to sell to a high school senior too. Oh, and btw, the kid that we signed last year out of high school, he's now a millionaire. It sells itself..

actually I think UCONN woman's team is the easiest. Kind of like getting a dinner reservation at Rao's in NYC. Just doesn't happen unless you are the most super of the super elite.

Getting to the point that something may need to happen with the NCAA stepping in to restore the competitive balance with UCONN.....I jest but can't think of anything else to level the playing field.

I was thinking about this with the 100 game streak talk. When does this become counter productive in regards to recruiting? Think about it, if you are a top girl hooper in high school, OK UConn is a great school but what are you going to accomplish? I mean they won 100 games, 98 of them by double digit margin.. So what happens when you get there? They win more? OK, but they can do it without you, what's the accomplishment with you there? Status quo? I mean they are expected to win, if you go there, you are expected to win and if you dont', you'll be on part of the team that blew a 4 season win streak..

Does anyone remember who he brought to Pitt from Florida? Was he responsible for HB Blades, Gus Mustakas, Greg Romeus and Jabaal Sheard? I remember in the mid 2000's Pitt had a ton of players from Florida. If that was Charlie's doing then this is very excting.

Piranha, I do remember having a ton of Florida players but I was looking at just the big time defensive players (mostly DL) from the time period he would have been responsible. If he can bring in those type of players again plus some speed guys then we really should be able to contend.

His ability to bring in Florida talent now should be greater than it was during his first stint.

-- Now, he's recruiting to a school in a better conference (ACC v. BE football).
-- He was just a HC in south Florida, connections have been enhanced.
-- Pitt's profile is much higher now for several reasons. (Every recruit in America knows that Pitt beat Clemson this year.)
-- The Florida pipeline is already active. Conklin and others have connections there too, and Narduzzi's staff has Florida recruits in their first two classes. Partridge doesn't need to convince south FL kids to be the first to come north to Pitt. The roster already has lots of new young Florida kids.

Also JJ Watts a Transfer from Central Michigan to Wisconsin later, NFL Three Time Defensive Player of the Year! This is what Matt Canada did with Offense with Peterman and other Pitt Players. One can't underestimate GAME FILM STUDY! This to me is the biggest difference at Pitt. remember, Aaron Donald used to be caught there late in the Hours and often slept there. If this happens with the Defense as much under Partridge Pitt will improve quickly in 2017 on Defense, in my view.
EXCERPT:
J.J. Watt set a high bar for Charlie Partridge's expectations. That should tell Pitt defensive linemen all they need to know about their new coach. Perhaps his time with Watt, the Houston Texans' All-Pro defensive end, is the best of many learning experiences Partridge brings back to Pitt as its new — and former — defensive line coach. When he left for Wisconsin in 2008, Partridge encountered Watt, a Central Michigan transfer walk-on, who was forced by NCAA rules to sit out the '08 season.
Partridge said after Watt spent the day practicing with the scout team, he often sat outside his office at night and waited for the coaches' meeting to end. He wanted to watch tape with Partridge, his position coach. “We were meeting until late hours of the night,” Partridge said. “He wanted to watch tape of himself on the scout team so he knew he was improving and not just going through the motions.”
Two years after he left Partridge and Wisconsin, Watt won the first of three NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards.

More Info from links on CP Recruiting that augment Great Poster's comments so some sharing on the Lair. After reading many Articles on CP I have concluded it is about Coach PN wanting to upgrade DL Recruiting after Pitt missed out some at the end. CP's coaching is just more Gravy.

I think Coach PN finally has his Pitt Assistants Stable and ready to take Pitt to the next step to Top 25 Winning and Rankings. Watson and Partridge both want to be at Pitt and Coach Pat again went about finding them quietly to come to Pitt! No Fanfare, no Media & Blogger Debates, no Lack of Focus.....just here is what I need and this is whom I have found to make a better Fit for Pitt Is It!
Excerpts:

Pittsburgh Sports Now reached out to Florida recruiting guru/legend Larry Bluestien and former Pitt defensive tackles Gus Mustakas and Rashaad Duncan for further perspective on Partridge...........“His knowledge of the game is on par with some of the best. His ability to relate to the younger players is perhaps something that is one of his strongest assets. He will help swing open the recruiting gates in South Florida.” Former Pitt defensive tackle Rashaad Duncan was recruited by Partridge out of Glades Central High School in Belle Glade, FL............... “I think the hiring of Coach Partridge is a great thing. I’m always ‘Hail to Pitt’ until the day I die. Anything that’s good for Pitt is good for me too and Coach Partridge is good for the football program,” stated Duncan. “We go back to when I was recruited by him going back to my 11th grade year. He has always been a good person and a good coach and the players always responded to him. Coach Partridge recently being at FAU is going to reopen the pipeline for Pitt to get more Florida talent to come to Pitt. Especially after Pitt beating Clemson, I think its perfect timing for Coach Partridge to open that pipeline and hurt Florida State as well. He’s definitely going to make a recruiting impact for Pitt.”.....“Coach Partridge is more than just a coach. He’s a friend, a father figure and a coach that can relate to the players. Being from the state of Florida, it really helped in my recruiting process. With him you get honest, that urgency that he wanted you and Pitt wanted you. He would tell you about the program and how the school would be good for you as a player and student. He would be there for you beyond practice as well. He’s a true players’ coach.”...............Duncan was if he could label Partridge’s style as a coach. What should current players expect from him? “Coach Partridge will pull the best out of you. He understands the role of a leader. He makes you want to play for him,” he said. “It’s like when you have a family member and you don’t want to see harm come to them. You want to make that family member proud, make them feel great. He puts so much coaching and so much into you, as a player and person that you have to put same into your performance because you don’t want to let him down. It’s a pride thing. We still communicate to this day.”..........“It’s pretty exciting for Coach Patridge to come back to the defensive line room where he started. He brings energy and relationships,” said Mustakas. “When it comes to defensive scheming, you have a guy who was just a head coach for a D1 program running your defensive front. It’s incredible to see him make a complete circle back to Pitt. Our university is extremely lucky to have someone like him in a position room and out recruiting as well.”.............."Coach Partridge is from south Florida and he knows the land and all of the coaches down there. He’s a huge asset to our university both on and off the field.”
