The rotund UPS kicker

I think it started with him going making big hits, and then people started hitting him.

Although recently, people have been hitting him late. Guys got ejected the last two games for late hits away from the play.

One of the opponents coaches gave the kid some props and said it's unusual because you can't just ignore him. I haven't seen them all - the "hit" in the Pitt game was a pretty good acting job but I also did see one where he did get cheap shotted.

If you want to be a tough guy and make big hits, then you need to be aware that you'll become a target of retaliation, whether it's clean or not.

I agree with everyone he started this by leveling someone and having shown several times on ESPN. Then he starts getting hit all of sudden he has an eating disorder. The eating disorder didn't stop him from leveling someone.

He was the media darling when he was lighting up dudes on kickoffs and getting on ESPN. Now, he's a victim with an eating disorder. Head on a swivel, big boy...

He's clearly taking dives to draw penalties, and the sad part is the officials are buying it. He acts like he's knocked out every time anyone makes contact with him.

It's kind of an "unwritten rule" that you don't go after the other team's kicker - and that the kicker stays back after kicking the ball and only plays the role of a "safety" (i.e. the last man to beat on a kickoff return).

But when the kicker starts running down the field like every other player and is joining-in on the tackle, then the unwritten rule no longer applies. To me, it sounds like the kid wants it both ways: he wants to act like "Joe Stud" and run down the field, but he wants the "don't hit the kicker rule" to apply -- he doesn't want to be hit.

So when he does take a hit, he tries to draw a personal foul: he dives and rolls around like a European soccer player.

The comical part of it is that he got smacked by blockers both times and then collapsed to the ground motionless like he had been assassinated by a sniper with a high powered rifle... similar to the Pitt game flop, but taking harder hits in the Minn/Maryland games.

If dirty/late/illegal blocks, I applaud the refs for throwing the flags, but I admittedly don't understand the NCAA targeting rule for a defenseless player, which seems it can include kickers running downfield during the return (not just during the act of kicking the ball). While blocks sent him to the ground landing on his face, neither player hit him in the head/neck, which I thought was necessary for a targeting ejection versus an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty?

it's super cool for him to run down the field and level guys 20, 30 yards from where the ballcarrier is

ROFL DID YOU SEE PSU'S FAT KICKER OBLITERATE THAT GUY WHAT A HIT

then it happens to him and...

OMG THAT'S AWFUL WHAT CHEAP SHOTS LEAVE THE PSU KICKER ALONE HE WAS NOWHERE NEAR THE PLAY

what a joke

emblematic of the double standard PSU tries to enforce on everyone

Friends tell me he's a Rock Star at STATE
I think you're correct!
At the PITT vs The Nitters a couple sitting next to us and a few other Nitter fans were yelling Go Get Em Joey on the kick-offs.
I turned to my wife and said isn't Joey the kicker's first name. Yup!
We watched and he was covering kicks like all the other players so Joey is eligible to get
his head knocked off like everyone else.

The first penalty was on a kick downed in the end zone. Second was out of bounds. Not running down the field on either. Minny and Maryland coaches both were upset over their players' targeting.

In any case, he runs down the field like he's a wedge-blocker, then he flops like a beached whale when someone gets the better of him. The other teams who scout the Nits see what he does, and that makes them want to cream him - and so they do.

Nice first post...what name do you use on BWI?

So?

Again if he wants to be a tough guy and run down the field to make a big hit and become a rock star, then he better keep his eyes open on the field at all times because someone is going to flatten him. That's the fact.

He's a fat guy playing against athletes. That alone is going to piss some opposing players off.

I think you will see more of this as the season goes on. Teams are not going to want to be on the wrong end of a big highlight involving a kicker. I just hope for his sake no one takes a knee out, which would not surprise me.

Targeting??
Maybe some large slow moving object got in their way and they were just doing some "housecleaning" if you know what I mean! Kinda like staying in their lane and keeping the trash out of it. Like that!

Yes. He's not a football player, he's a kicker. No player wants to be tackled by a kicker especially one that gets time on the ESPN highlight reel. He's going to be put in his place. He needs to stay back as kickers do and make a tackle when he's the last man standing. Otherwise, he will get his head knocked off.

Bingo!!! He wants to play big shot "gunner" and lay some big hits, but doesn't want any big blocks on him. Can't have it both ways. I'll pass on the eating disorder analysis.

If you're going to be a football player, accept that you're going to get drilled. Quarterbacks do every single damn day and they rarely cry about the borderline stuff.

This kid goes down and tries to clothesline a Michigan returner, and pretty much DOES clothesline him and then is out there like a b**ch because someone hit him in the head and shoulders. Welcome to life where people actually play football.

The best way to avoid getting blocked is to kick the ball and run off the field. Otherwise you are a potential tackler and you are fair game. Don't want to get blocked, play soccer.

He will only get one shot at glory against. OSU.

Cheap shots can never be condoned away from the play. Especially when they're from behind.

I don't think anyone is condoning anything. We are giving reasons as to why it's happened to him TWICE in the last few weeks.

How many kickers have been flattened this year on kickoffs??? Show me one besides Julius. The answer is ZERO.

There is a reason it happened to him more than once. It has been stated a few times already on this thread.

One second he bolts down the field and clothes lines a ball carrier, but then flops to the ground when he gets hit from the blindside. You can't have it both ways. I have no sympathy for kickers that stick their noses in the action. A kicker should be the last line of defense, not a gunner...
