I know Addison treated Pitt poorly. So what? Lincoln Riley is a sleaze? Dog bites man.
The fact of the matter is that total free agency is not only not the worst that could happen, it’s the best that could happen.
Here’s why.
When the the baseball reserve clause was tossed out, Marvin Miller went in to negotiate for the players.
Charley Finley, owner of the Athletics said, ok, everyone is a free agent after every season.
Miller shat his pants because he knew that players would actually have to perform and each year negotiate off what they did the year before. That goes both ways and the market settles itself out.
But Charley’s O was smarter than the rest of the owners. They panicked and sold out for long term deals. Like oil futures.
So long term contracts became the norm and priced small market teams out of contention because they didn’t have local TV revenue to cover their mistakes.
Charley O got out of baseball because he knew his fellow owners were stupid.
Pitt does not have to change a thing. We will still get great players and while some will leave, most will stay. Likewise, Addison type players will leave but some will fail/get hurt, etc.
USC took 14 transfers from Oklahoma. That is far more dangerous than a B winner leaving.
NIL contracts offer very little ROI. That will get old quickly.
