The first half was a prototype Pitt football suckfest.
But, by the end of the game they mucked out a clear win in a game they should have had a clear win, a feat this program has managed to pull of less than half the time post glory years.
Defensively, this is by far the best defensive scheme we have seen for this program in a long, LONG time. This defense MOVES FORWARD and toward the ball. Consistently. THAT is what a defense in this day and age needs to do.
They are likely to get lit up on passes at times with the heavy man to man on the back end, but there is more attacking consistently, more opportunities to make plays and more chances to choke out the run game.
They showed the defensive staff while they are were on the field and the coaches were more active, engaged and energetic toward the players on the field than I saw the coaches at any time for PC in three years.
Hard to know for sure because the first two teams have been so poor offensively, but we also have seen that they have some potential impact players at every level, Jarret and Blair on the DL, Whitehead as S, Maddox is going to get beat but is a real gamer at CB. LB overall is still weak, but Grigsby can be an impactful guy.
Offensively, I have supported Chad very strongly, but unless he REALLY makes big steps on throwing downfield, you have to believe the job is going to Peterman unless the wheels come off. The offense should continue to develop with him.
But, they are so dinged up at OL and RB. They REALLY need to catch a break and no one else get a major injury AND who they have needs to get a lot healthier.
Good to see Boyd back. Yeah, the other WRs have a lot to be desired at this point, but for at least one more season, Boyd IS on the team.
Overall, the team appears to be playing cleanly, minimal penalties, not having to burn a couple TOs a game because the offense isn't getting set up, etc.
