There was at least one piece of good news today

I guess I'm old and in a minority I happen to like Tim and thought he did a decent job I wasn't a fan of Wehner at first but he's grown on me and I think Steve Blass does good job. I actually think the pirates have good announcers compared to other teams. I wonder if they will bring in someone for a short term fix.

I agree with you, the pirates announcers are great. I do think Tim was certainly just the boring straight guy though. Wehner I can do without... its amazing how someone that played baseball can give such little insight and not know some of the little things. Bob Walk, Greg Brown and Steve Blass I love all three and makes a Pirate game a unique listening experience compared to others. It is more Harry Carey-ish in nature, and before you laugh, I live in Chicago, trust me, Cubs fans had no idea what the F Harry was talking about half the time. By the way, I am moving to Boston, so I am going with Tim!

As time goes on Walk and Blass are more and more becoming the opposite sides of the coin. Walk will tell some stories, but he mostly seems to be interested in explaining what is going on and why it's going on and what he thinks a team should be doing. At this point Blass seems to only be interested in telling stories, and if given a choice between attempting to explain the strategy of what someone is doing or should be doing or telling some random story about something that happened in 1968 he picks the latter every single time. I would never argue that there is no place for story telling in a baseball game broadcast, but at some point I'd like the color commentator to at least pretend that he cares about what is going on in the game he's actually being paid to comment on and why it's happening. He used to be at least decent, maybe better, at that, but not for a long time now.

haha... i did literally LOL at your post in a good way, I totally agree. But then again, that was Myron Cope as well, no? Also Mike Lange? mmmm.... Hilgrove?

The best Pirate guy to do it all was Lanny Frattare, he was adept at combining everything. I am not old enough to know the legend before him.

Enjoy Boston. I believe I have mentioned this on the board before but I've heard Lanny do football games he is very good. Some day on this board we'll have to rate the ESPN announcers who do football I have several strong opinions on that subject but we'll save that for another day.

I checked Wikipedia and Lanny seems to only do WPIAL games now? Thanks for the well wishes, I wish Pitt played BC yearly now

I liked Tim. Thought he was like a good "second" announcer, not a so called "voice if the team". But good nonetheless

I grew up with Lanny. It was good to hear his voice on some of those HS games. I know he had some personal issues that caused him to "retire" a touch early.

But the big question is who replaces him? For those lf u that wanted him out, careful what u ask for!

Neverette is EXTREMELY sarcastic. These things unfortunately go over the head of most Pittsburghers. He did a good job. Good luck to him obviously.

And the human more than a decade past his prime Steve Blass too.
I'll come clean. Blass is terrible IMO. He knows his baseball no doubt, but rarely used his knowledge. Instead, he tends to chastise paying customers in Pittsburgh for showing their displeasure.
I am also very hard on fans in Pittsburgh...maybe because I expect them to be the best...but, IMHO the Pittsburgh baseball fan is among the most knowledgeable in MLB.
Blass was given a job by the Pirates when he was down on his luck and I understand why he acts as he does.
But I don't have to like it.
Wehner will at least call out a player.
As for ourdearly departed number 2 announcer....good for him. He is from the Boston suburb of New Hamphire and will retire from the Bosox booth. We should all be so lucky.

Different roles. Blass and Cope are/were color commentators. Lange and Hillgrove are play by play guys. Cope told stories, but he also had a good understanding of football and conveyed that to the listener. Up until the end he was still at a place that Blass left a decade ago, where he told some stories but he also kept you informed on what was going on in the game.

Hillgrove used to be a pretty good play by play guy (especially for a "homer" announcer as opposed to a "neutral" announcer) but he is waaaaay past his prime on both football and basketball. At one time Lange was one of, if not THE best guy doing hockey. He had a knack for telling you what was going to happen next more than any other broadcaster I've ever heard. His feel for the game was excellent. The number of times he'd say that one team or the other was going to score a goal and then within the next minute or so they did was astounding. He had a period of a few years there were his quality of work was way, way down, which is what drove Root Pittsburgh's predecessor to make the absolutely moronic decision to replace him on television with perhaps the worst play by play guy this city has ever seen. Now that the "problem" that was the main cause of Lange's work suffering has been dealt with he's decent on the radio, but he is also past his prime.

For the record, I had no problem with Neverette. I didn't think he was great, but he certainly wasn't bad either. The Pirates can do better, but they can also do a lot worse.

Mike Lange was great.... until his alcoholism spilled over into the broadcasts. He was a lush, and the quality of his work fell greatly because of it.

Yeah, it was alcohol. It seems as if he has that part of his life under control now, but he's still not as good as he used to be back in the day.

Lenny has admitted that the bottle is a dark part of his life too. One of the big reasons he got back into broadcasting.

Greg Brown is the male version of a hysterical, teenie bopper, at play calling and talks too much about tancient history, stories from the past few years can be interesting but this guy waste air time about things from 25-40 years ago. And if he ever loses his stat sheet , people will think he died on the job because of all the silence.

The red sox taking the human sleeping pill Tim neveritt
I liked Tim and wish him well......imo Walk was very good early, but seems to go off track way too often onto really goofy STUFF.

IF you get beyond Wehners voice he actually is a smart guy and gives good situational info

Rob King is the most underutilized talent in this city..... When ROOT uses washups like Stan and Paul .........click
Does King do play by play?

I agree about king. Very talented. Being outside of Pittsburgh, I usually enjoy pomp as well, but not sure if yinzers like him or not. The fan guy that sometimes does our basketball games is decent too

I like Brown's enthusiasm and open rooting. I want dispassionate journalism, I'll go to some national broadcast team. We bitch all the time on this site about the Pittsburgh PG "not liking" our Panthers. Well, it's obvious Brown loves the Pirates and openly roots for them. I think he's the best we've had in my lifetime (62 y/o).
