This Board in a Nutshell

Pitt’s fans are largely no different than other team’s fans: emotions reflect the current state. I could argue that we are more dedicated and passionate than those of teams that have perennial success. It’s easy to love a winner.

No, Pitt has its share of nuts who are critical of everything and many (like me) who are shellshocked over roughly 45 years of disappointment. That's this board in a nutshell.

Pitt is playing poorly and a bunch of people post. Pitt plays really well the last 20 minutes and makes a good comeback to win and the board goes quiet for the most part. Pitt has way too many fair weather miserable fans.
Sauce - Remember, when you are angry, disappointed and frustrated during a game, fans need an outlet. I admit that there are a couple of fans that go way over the top and need to reel it in. What makes me roll my eyes is when a poster goes outside the game thread to post nonsense during the game...

Count me as one of the frustrated not only week to week but the overall health and direction of this program.

Even in a lopsided NIL induced landscape, Pitt should be a solid 8+ wins every season. The league, the OOC.... plenty of layups every year.

I don’t visit other boards but I’d be willing to be a fair amount of money you’re describing most. I doubt this board is much of an outlier. In fact I’d guess the blue bloods/big money teams boards’ at times are even worse.

How do you think this is possible? How do we have more talent than Syracuse or UNC if the NIL pot is smaller?

Its basic human wiring. Sports talk programs get more traffic when times are bad. After a win, most go relax or do something useful. After a loss, you're pissed and need to vent to someone. Basic human nature and no different here than any other team's board.

Yep. There are more than who few here whose legs could be peed on and but convinced it was raining. There are extremes on either end.

Sure…everyone gets frustrated. But why don’t these same posters post with the same fervor when we win and/or good things happen?

Because in general people have more fervor when they’re pissed. People don’t typically call customer service and rave about how great things are. It does happen, but the negative ranting and raving far outweighs the positive.

IMO . People can be critical for the mediocre play the past 40 years .
I'll keep rooting for them .. H2P !!!

I think it’s personal pride to some extent. They’ve already gone out on a limb with a certain opinion and are reluctant to give it up even if the end result is something they want deep down, namely a Pitt victory.

IE... fans?

I guess I am an engineer so I dont get too excited or down, but I agree with Special Sauce here, Pittsburghers in general are a bit more like this than any other place Ive lived (and its been a few). Pittsburgh, for as nice as people are, are the most negative Ive been around. When I left home for college, people would ask why was I so negative, it was just cause of growing up there. I would say cautiously pessimistic is what I was.

The south beat me out of that though, I am an optimist now., when I talk to family in the burgh it just annoys me at how they hate the coach, the qb, every sport team is the same... fire narduzzi, fire tomlin, fire shelton, fire whoever the penguin coach is, its a crazy way to live. Who really gives a rat ass if a sports team comprised of a bunch of people not from your area wins? Sure, good to enjoy a pastime, but relax.

I agree. Some here create and image of being "realists" by being negative. Then, when positive things happen, they can't bring themselves to admit they were wrong. They feel they are superior and don't want to believe they are no better than others.

Watch the Bearcat podcast that HOF posted on the freeboard. Go 12 minutes into it.
Cinci fans are no different than us, especially after a monumental collapse.

I disagree. The fans are passionate as hell. When the team is doing badly and the expectations were that they were going to do well, it triggers commentary. Then when the team makes a comeback or plays well you are captured by the game and forget that there even is a thing like social media.

I can sometimes do this. But I always come back to say how proud of them I am when they do come back or have a great game or even if they lose. I also try not to post too much criticism outside of the actual game thread and never ever blame the kids because they are young and obviously want to do their best.

What happened on Saturday was incredible. I give equal credit to the players and the coaching staff to figure out what wasn't working and correct it. It was a big win and hopefully they can keep it going this weekend. I do believe this team is going to win at least 6-7 games this year and make a bowl game. What will be even more interesting is can they cvompete for 10 wins and the conference title. I think they certainly can for sure but they have to do it of course

Here's maybe a more objective "board in a nutshell" synopsis:

Pitt plays poorly for the better part of 3 quarters against a low end P4 opponent, looks terrible doing it, and a group of posters are posting that the sky is falling, heads will roll, put in the 3rd stringer, etc. Meanwhile a second group of posters who are refraining from posting that stuff are nonetheless thinking it in the moment themselves, they just aren't intellectually honest enough to admit it.

Pitt completes remarkable and unexpected 4th quarter comeback against said low end P4 team, and that second group of posters starts "I told you so"ing the first group, and posting about how many millions it's going to take for Pitt to fight off the Bamas etc and retain Holstein and Kade Bell beyond this season, how Desmond Reid is a dark horse Heisman candidate, how Pitt is looking at an undefeated conference season, and similar such nonsense. The first group goes silent and absorbs all the insults from the second group.

Both groups of posters appear equally, but oppositely, ridiculous. I have never visited another college football message board, but I'd wager good money that those two types of posters are plentiful on every single one of them.

The doomposters need to get a grip. We have a RS-Freshman starting his second game, a brand new and first-time OC, we lost a ton of talent to transfers on defense, and we're playing a lot of dudes who came up a level from Western Carolina.

It's not going to be pretty!

But you need to keep things in perspective. The offense and especially the QB will grow with time. This isn't like Jurko being totally washed as a fifth year player. Be patient and hope for the upside.

You also need to be reasonable with your remedies. "Fire Narduzzi!" Ok, who are you going to get? Probably another Big Ten defensive coordinator? Or a MAC head coach? That's stupid. "Bench Holstein!" Ok, for who? Yarnell looked significantly worse and less accurate last week. Neither of those two are serious answers and yet I saw a ton of them this weekend.

Pitt is not Alabama. And if you expect them to get it right 100% of the time, or for automatically better talent to be potentially available on the bench or the coaching market, do us all a favor and just stop watching the games. Because you are just making yourself angrier and crazier for nothing.
