Win 3 in a row and get everyone excited and then a WTF loss leads to a pattern of poor play that takes a while to dig out of.

He will be back next year. I get that. But it will happen over and over again next year too.

We lose out and he loses three players off the roster, how in hell can she bring him back?

We are going to end up 11-20 in year 4 of his tenure. Heather made a mistake by giving him an extension and needs to figure a way to get out from under it.

Heather made a mistake
Really, it is all on Heather from here on out. The players are trying, they are not close to good enough, tonight verse Miami very evident, HCJC is in way over his head, but he is working, staying upbeat in the face of embarrassment but he can't recruit, strategize, or a build a culture well enough. He should be getting fired but Heather extended him. He has no way out so he has to keep trying even without the skills in order to save face, I bet he would love to be relieved of his duties here.

The first sign this was going to be a disaster...he couldn't recruit Brandon Knight to Pitt.

Next year will be worse.

I heard before the season that he was done after this year. The suggestion at the time was that it would be a mutual type decision and he would find a soft landing spot. I don't know how that happens now. I can't see him getting a head coaching gig.

If this were true, it would make one more year more palatable, at least there is an end in sight and motivation for him do the very best job he could. Of course a bit more success is needed, mutual agreement that it is not a good fit makes a ton of sense.

If the buyout truly is $15 million, he can coach the last 3 games naked and have his entire team transfer and still be back. If that number is wrong (of course it is according to message board guys), and its significantly less, he gets canned if he loses enough good players

If all the guy cares about is money, then right you are. Complete failure for 5-6 years will take a special kind of gold-digging reserved for the really low character types, time will what he is.

What does losing current players really have to do with it? So what if they come back next season they will all be out of eligibility in the next couple years anyway. It just seems like an incredibly shortsighted approach to take when you are making a long term decision whether to keep your coach or not.

Every team has a couple decent players on their roster any given season, you can play the we will keep the coach if these guys stay game every single year.

Remember, you are talking about a guy who thinks that Capel should come back not because he thinks that the team will be significantly improved or is trending in the right direction, he thinks he should come back because as a fan he doesn't want to watch a rebuilding team next year.

He'd rather watch a crappy team next year and a rebuilding team the year after. Which makes no sense at all. But consider the source.

Explain why he would take a penny less than what his contract states? Pitt is his last P6 job.

Because he cant get a 3rd total rebuild here.

Because I am hoping for a Miami or Wake. We have some pieces. If we get a Charlie Moore and Mo Gueye, its an NCAAT team

We have no pieces on this team. If we did, we would have won more than 11 total games with many of those wins in the OOC with some patsies. Nothing against these kids because their primary purpose is not to play basketball....it's to get an education and graduate. I suggest that they focus on that.

We have a Mo Gueye right now and we're nowhere close to an NCAAT team.

So you're saying that we add a Charlie Moore to the current team and we're in the NCAAT? That's ridiculous and it's why nobody can take you seriously.

With Sibande and Horton a full year and the other players a year better, yes, if we add a Charlie Moore, we can be a tournament team. Just like Miami, who was worse than us last year.

You keep bringing up Miami from last year without mentioning the whole team was hurt last year. They traded Lykes for Moore. Which isn’t that much of a different player. Also capel couldn’t even bring in the Marshall transfer point guard last year. What makes you think he could get a good transfer this year.

Be real , he has a signed contact with a guaranteed buyout amount and there’s not many people that would just say oh sorry I didn’t live up to your expectations forget about the money .

I seriously doubt that he wants to leave under these circumstances, he’s a competitor .

I agree that it’s hard to walk away from a lot of money. But Capel may be in a bind. Hugley openly admitted that guys aren’t doing what they’re being coached to do. And what can Capel do? Not much. If he benches guys then on court product gets way worse. If he doesn’t then guys can continue to free lance. And once that door’s been opened it’s very hard to close. It’s possible they could come to a number that’s mutually beneficial. Capel will still have enough dough for a comfy lifestyle. But yea again- it’s hard to walk away from 3-4 mil ish if you think you can get it.

Short answer is you take the huge embarrassing loss and bench guys
Anytime Hugley floats on the perimeter on offense - pull him
Every time Burton dribbles himself into a fall away jumper going 1 on 3, bench him
Every time femi dribbles for 10 seconds without passing - bench him

Mo Gueye is the only dude who deserves a long leash

Theoretically I absolutely agree. But speaking of long leashes, that plays into a coach’s ability to do that. That’s why I said bind. It’s almost like damned if you do/don’t.

I mean when you’re losing by 20 points -
What’s the difference between that and losing by 30?
I know there are no answers in the bench
But getting Santos , Collier , Jeffress more run isn’t a bad thing
Use Eze , Payton or Olidapo to round out the 5

Don’t disagree with that either. If this is year 2 I think there’s a better chance he may try that. But the best chance for wins is to keep playing the guys who play. If those others guys get that much run they’re gonna get drummed for sure. And yea I do realize there’s a good chance they might get drummed regardless. But those guys remain the best chance to win.

Yes
But it’s also why letting x and Trey just play - let to a mass exodus , and even dudes like Toney(who always played hard ) and AKC bolting so an even weaker roster with less options
Capel has the long contract / he should have been more comfortable to instill discipline

It’s easy to say put these guys on the bench and lose by 30 or 40 pts when its not your team , we’re fans , this isn’t your livelihood . Pitts best and only chance to win is to play the few capable players they have faults and all , sitting them diminishes any chance you have to win or even be respectable. Try and address these issues in practice , if they fight you then you bench them , ie X and Hugley .

Taking your better players out and losing by 40 would just add fuel to the fire for the Capel haters . Until he can get a roster with 8 or 9 ACC level players his hands are tied . ( I know he’s responsible for his roster ! )

Bottom line ….programs a big mess !
