We entered the period with our biggest needs a starting point guard and a starting power forward? Right?

Let me state up front I am not an expert on the complete skill sets of the players we have and seem to be recruiting..

That said, I don’t think Cummings, Meechie or McNeilly are starting point guards. . I don’t think Hinson,Fede, the twins or Poteat are starting power forwards.

I don’t think Akok is a healthy starting power forward.

Square pegs into round holes, injured guys, guys who missed a lot of time and lottery tickets.

I was hoping for better than where we seem to be going.

I understand your point but I think this is the best this staff can do at this point. If they get all the guys you mentioned, they will probably be a better team than this past year but they still will be a subpar 3 point shooting team and will struggle to score enough points at times. I think it just gets them to .500 overall which means a bubble Nit team.

Pitt unfortunately isn’t attractive to the top transfers. Maybe plan B and C type guys. Gueye was a hit. Burton at times too. Capel us giving me optimism. Wish Horton didn’t transfer as he was our only shooter. Still need A LOT of help.

Pitt fans starting to have amnesia or are suffering from battered Pitt fan syndrome. So far the additions this year are not making the team any better. Also the players Pitt are hoping to get will not make team better than last year. These players and the hopefuls wouldn’t be capels best roster. His best roster had Johnson, McGowans, Toney, and Champagne, and that team wasn’t .500.

I disagree on Cummings and Akok - I think both of those guys are starter level players in the ACC. And Meechie’s the big wildcard because I think he’d step in and be the most talented guard on the roster, and I think he’s good enough to win the starting point guard job.

Akok’s numbers are basically Gueye’s from last year, with a little less scoring (basically because he was a worse free throw shooter) and a little more rebounding, but the question is whether he can handle Gueye’s minute load. If he can, I think he’s at worst an even swap, with a bigger upside.

I think Cummings and Akok and Hinson are bench/rotation guys on GOOD ACC teams......but clearly P6 level players

Miami just paid 400k for a pg , Kentucky got Oscar 500+ to stay , what your seeing is a legalized version of what‘s been going on for awhile in college Bb . Expecting Pitt to be the destination for highly sought after guys is wishful thinking unless the big boosters step forward . People also seem to forget that JD couldn’t get decent transfers when the team wasn’t a bottom third team in the ACC .

Anyone thinking that yr 2 of JC was a solid roster forgets that Trey wasn’t a happy camper and left in Dec , that TB was the best 5 they had and they couldn’t shoot . Not to mention that opposing teams were not going to be fooled by X’s penetration skills . Pitt hasn’t had an a roster without glaring weaknesses since JRobs senior season.

Well, I think the ship has sailed on Capel assembling a roster that is "good". We're merely trying to piece something respectable together at this point. If you're looking at this team from a Howland/Dixon glory years perspective, you're wasting your time. If you're looking at it from a, "Woooh, I hope we can make the NIT" perspective, then there's a small amount of hope, I guess.

We're basically assembling a starting five that would be a P6 tournament team's backups, with the exception of Hugley.

That's kind of depressing, considering he was logging 17 minutes and 4 ppg with an Ohio State team that wasn't even really all that good. Not that I haven't accepted our status at this point.

I think he’s got a chance to be a very good point guard and ballhandler when he’s healthy. Ohio State didn’t have him playing that role, which is a big reason why he’s transferring. Classic case of a fresh start being a good thing.

While agree with you on most of that. I still think if Capel was to land all of the above it would be his most talented team.
Some of these guys have a pedigree. They could be players. We certainly need players.

Maybe in our situation, intelligent roster construction and team building is impossible?

I would still like to see at least one true point guard.

He scored fifty in a game in high school. I doubt he was running offense or distributing much.

He andNelly Cummings are more of X, Trey and Femi.

I am sick of dribble drive. Move the ball.

Can not count on capel to actually close on meechie or akok. There is zero chance Pitt gets both, and less than 10 percent Pitt gets one of them. Remember last year all the names us fans though Pitt would get, and ended up with none of them. The four Pitt got weren’t on the fans radar.

Agree on still needing a lot of help. Right now, I think we can field a not embarrassing team.

Spot on about the best roster.

Spot on about the best roster.

It had the most talent (arguably: some might choose Hugley over McGowens and JWF), but it definitely wasn't a well-constructed team due to not having a legit big man (among other deficiencies). Plus some of those guys were young.

Either way, this is why I want to recruit at least a few high schoolers, as opposed to all transfers. We need to strike gold and find someone who can be the next Champagnie. With these transfers, you already know you're not getting any studs, even if some of them may be safer bets overall. Give me a Powerball ticket over the Daily Pick 3.
