a little late, but here are some my game/atmosphere thoughts from Akron:

- The worst rain I've ever been in for an event, any event. I laughed when I read that Akron announced their 2nd largest crowd ever. While they may have sold their 2nd most tickets ever, I'd estimate attendance to be around 6,000. Tons and tons of no shows. Hardly anybody was sitting in the stands. Most people were huddled underneath the upper deck to get out of the rain. That's where we were for most of the game. The problem with that was that there were so many people, you couldnt see over people and through people.....but it beats sitting in the tropical depression or whatever that was.

- The funny thing was for the plays you missed because someone's head got in the way, I had to go off crowd reaction which was tricky. Where we were, it was mostly Pitt fans, so if I heard a big cheer, I knew we did something good. I'd estimate there were maybe 2,000 Pitt fans and 4,000 Akron fans. Thats being very generous to Akron because it did seem like there were more Pitt fans there but I believe that visiting crowds are always overstated. Akron probably had more fans there than we did.

- As for the stadium, it was OK, no frills. I never would have guessed it was new if you didnt tell me. It wasnt bad but there was just nothing to it. If Pitt ever built a new stadium, it would have to be done first-class, state of the art, or I dont want one. To give you an idea of how bad the crowd was, I parrallel parked on the main street there, 3 blocks from the stadium at 5:15.

- As for the actual game, I had a bad feeling about it and when Hundley broke free for that TD run, I was sure we were going to lose. It just had all the makings of it. I know I'm accused of being pessimistic but after watching Pitt my whole life, I dont know how you can't be. I kept telling myself that the only way we were going to win that game was if Narduzzi outcoached Bowden because with the conditions the 2 teams looked pretty evenly matched sorry to say. I dont know if it was Narduzzi's coaching that won that game but the D played absolutely outstanding against an offense that ran the ball down our throats last year like they were Nebraska in 1985. Our run D is pretty good.

- To be honest, I was really really surprised we won that game. SAME OLE PITT was written all over it. Chris Peak came up with a truly unbelievable stat on his podcast. He said that Pitt has only gone unbeaten against non-P5 schools, something like twice in 12 years. This would now be 3 times. I mean that sums it up. Every year, there's a "same ole Pitt" game and maybe we've avoided that this year. Akron is not a terrible team. They were picked 3rd in the MAC East. For comparison's sake, the Buffalo team that PSU struggled with was picked 5th. It wasn't pretty but it was a good win.

- After the YSU game, I posted something like our D played pretty well except for 2 big plays and our offense didnt play well except for a few big plays. I'm now under the impression that our D is going to be pretty good. Not great, but much improved from last year. However, our offense has a lot of problems. Our run blocking hasn't been as good as it needs to be and we were discounting Conner too much. Ollison/James/Hall are going to struggle at times. And we have a major problem developing at the other WR spot. Those guys can't get open. Nobody is talking about the lack of talent we have at WR outside of Boyd. I really want to beat PSU next year but we're going to have to throw the ball against their roided up defensive machine and our WRs simply do not look very good. If I"m Iowa, I have Safety help on Boyd all day and let the other WRs and RBs beat us. I was really discouraged with our offensive performance.

- As for Peterman vs Voytik. Peterman had the biggest drive of the season late in that 2nd quarter but I'm not convinced he's better than Voytik. I feel bad for Chad.

I actually didn't mind the stadium design. I thought it was simple, but nice. I was at Ohio U a few years ago, and Akron's stadium definitely beat the crap out of that one.

They don't need to go state of the art. I really wish it didn't rain that entire time. Would have been nice to walk around more.

"The worst rain I've ever been in for an event, any event"..........hmm, any oldtimers out there remember the Pitt/Temple game from back in 1985 or 86 where Ironhead ran wild but Pitt lost. ...now that was rain....

On TV the lighting looked like 1970's bad. Was it that bad in real life??
Wasn't that bad in person from what I could see thru the rain. I thought the turf itself looked a little drab so that may be what showed up on TV. Looking forward to the replay tonite at 9pm on root.

I actually think there were probably at least 12 thousand there. From the Akron side it looked like a real good Pitt contingent in the stands early in the game and there were fans 4 deep under the overhangs. As the game wore on it kept thinning out. I retreated to the BWW after 3 quarters. Hypothermia was setting in.

I didn't like the lack of video and/or radio in the concourses. There was also a really long line at the ticket office, which I found odd once the game started and the stadium wasn't even close to half full. Also, the audio when they did things during media breaks was so low that you had to guess as to what was going on. I thought it was a pretty mediocre game day experience.

There was one thing that really irritated the crap out of me. It was that butthole who kept screaming for all 12 Zip fans to get fired up and kept trying to get a "let's go Zips" chant going. I wanted to punch that guy.

I think that he quit doing that after he realized that it was being turned in to a "Let's go Pitt" cheer. Pitt fans were definitely louder than the Akron fans. The "Rize Up" schtick got old real quick.

I think it was 86. Worst rain I've ever seen. The Akron game reminded me of that rain. The power on Pitt stadiums scoreboard and clocks went out. It was crazy- Pitt of course lost as Congemi was asking the official how much time was left and the game ended.

I would estimate more PITT fans. Our parking lot was all PITT fans.
Walking around the concourse during breaks I'd estimate 60%+ PITT fans.

Agree on the defense. Pretty good.

I though the crowd was about 12-14k, judging by the fact that it was 5 deep from goalpost to goalpost the entire game on both sides.. and AT LEAST 5k Pitt fans.. There were times I saw nothing but...

People around the boards who don't like Chad are cringing at what you said (and things I've said the last couple days). "Chad deserves what he's gotten." "Why call certain plays just because Chad can run them better?"

What they don't get is that it's not about Chad or "feeling bad" for him ... it's serious concern whether the other guy (and the plays they are running because HE runs those better) is a clear superior quarterback. I am far from confident about that. Tossing for a buck fifty one time against a MAC team isn't convincing enough for me. On the other hand, we have seen Chad when he is playing decent for a sustained stretch (thanks to plays being called to his strengths), and against more than a MAC team. With Conner out, no decent 2ND WR and both tackles in serious flux (plus Rowell), I wonder if abandoning the multidimensional guy who can do more with his legs, and throwing in behind an unaccomlished transfer with less mobility and an unknown track record is automatically the obvious answer. Everybody else seems convinced it is. Including Duz and Chaney. I hope they're right. I promise I won't feel bad for Chad if they are, but I'll sure as hell feel bad for ME if they aren't.

Hard to get a good crowd estimation since everybody was standing like it was a rock concert. However, if there were 3-5 deep which I generally agree with, that's only the equivalent to about 10 full rows.

There were definitely a lot more Pitt fans on the Pitt sideline which was GA. Besides Akron students, I dont remember seeing any AKR fans over there.

Speaking about games played in conditiobs like that, I remeber sitting through a Pitt/AKR game at Pitt Stadium in 1998 that was played through a terrible downpour. Honestly, I'd estimate there were only 2,000 people at that game.

We were among a few brave souls who braved it out in the upper deck behind the Pitt bench. Hard to tell how many because everyone mostly huddled (another problem was water was running in sheets downs the aisles and puddled under the rows, so you almost had to sit with your feet up on the row in front). It got to the point we couldn't even clap. We left at the beginning of the 4th quarter.

Excellent OP. Had very similar feelings during the game.

--I was in the crowd standing under the upper deck overhang, and I can tell you we were 8 deep, because I counted. The wife and I were up front and the vantage point was not that far from the field, but it was crappy for the folks standing in the back. (We ended up standing next to #30s mom...)

--I also parked (for free) right on Exchange Street, just a short walk from the stadium... But I got there earlier and went to the Pitt Alum event - the food was good.

--I thought it was funny how, for the entire game, the scoreboard showed Akron with 5 timeouts remaining. I think Pitt started the second half with 2 timeout remaining... A few times the number of Akron timeouts would run in a loop for a while going from 9 down to 0 and back to 9, then settle again on 5.

--Once again impressed with #35 Aston. Made some key blocks and caught a pass to get a first down.

--I thought it was odd that Chad seemed very out-of-sync even with the read-option handoffs. Like his whole game is a bit off right now.

--I was at the monsoon Temple game with my son back in the day. Only time I've ever left a Pitt game with more than a couple of minutes left. The weather was brutal - sheets of blowing rain. We still talk about that one.

--If we ever do get a stadium, I hope they consider that there should be at least some areas that are sheltered from the rain...

Go Pitt.

Mr. Pitt-girl was going crazy about that. LOL.

It wasn't that the scoreboard was showing Akron with 5 timeouts left. The number of timeouts Akron had was the second digit of the play clock. So when the clock was stopped for a change of possession or whatever Akron had five timeouts because the play clock was at 25. Oddly enough Pitt's number of timeouts left was frequently the first digit of the play clock, so when the play clock was at 25 Pitt had two timeouts left. But when the play clock was at 19 Pitt had one timeout left and Akron had 9. And so on. It really was an odd thing to watch their timeouts change second by second.

On the rain, it may not have been the worst rain ever, but it just never let up. From about 4:00 until the game was almost over it was just that continual, relentless rain shower. No breaks, no slow downs, just rain and then more of it.

Honestly (and maybe this is TMI), but the only article of my clothing that was somewhat dry when we got home was my bra. Everything else was soaked. It literally seeped through 2 ponchos probably because I made the mistake of actually moving my arms to clap for most of the game. Thank goodness I thought ahead and wore my trusty waterproof hiking shoes which have seen much worse.

On another note, the Alumni Assoc pregame was very nice. They did everyone a solid by passing out free ponchos which came in handy (who knew we needed more than 1 each?). These events are really nice and it would have been great with the band there - but...... oh well. Scott Barnes walked around and greeted everyone. Hard to miss that guy and he comes across as genuinely nice. Looking forward to the Duke game.

On the parking, we ended up in a lot almost right across the street from the stadium. There was a sign up that said the cost was $10 and tailgaiting was allowed. But there was no attendant there to actually collect the money. And oddly enough the 50-ish spot lot never even filled up.

I think I'm still drying out from that game in '86. At least the Akron game temperature wasn't that bad. I think the Miami game was in the upper 40's if I remember correctly. That was friggin' nasty.

Wasn't it Pitt vs Akron in 2000, at Three Rivers Stadium, where the game was suspended because of lightning? I remember it was early, it was the game RJ English had a 90 yard reception catch.. Regardless, it was a MAC opponent, it was 3 rivers and it was suspended.

Why on earth would Pitt be going on the road to play a MAC school? How does that happen?

Michigan State and Oklahoma State went on the road to MAC schools this year. There are only about 30 programs in the country who can afford to NOT go on the road against G5 schools.

But when the play clock was at 19 Pitt had one timeout left and Akron had 9. And so on. It really was an odd thing to watch their timeouts change second by second.
Another funny thing about the scoreboard: The little football that showed who had possession...Heard someone behind me ask Why is Akron's score minus 7? Made me chuckle, which wasn't easy considering the conditions. The Temple rain was MUCH harder, in comparison this was a sprinkle.

Ok, but did Pitt at least get a 2 for 1 out of it?

No, mainly because Pitt was in a bind with scheduling due to conference realignment and schedules being blown up.

I honestly don't know why this is such a big deal though. It happens everywhere.

I didn't think it was bad. It was fine in person.

I haven't watch the game on TV yet, might catch it tonight, but I heard the ESPN3 feed was horrible for that game.
The feed was horrible. Whoever was running the down and distance was obviously occupied by something else to actually do their jobs and the announcers were beyond horrible. According to them, Nate and Chad combined into one super QB named "Chad Peterman." To be fair the quality of picture was pretty decent but that might be because I have better technology to watch from.

It was under the ESPN MAC tv contract meaning it was a much lower budget production. ESPN doesnt spend much money on MAC telecasts which is why the broadcast was similar to a local HS game or PSAC game.

That makes sense because it was horrible. The only benefit was I had the Pitt game on my laptop and the OU - Tenn game on my I-pad all while eating food in bed. It was the ultimate Jim Gaffigan evening.

You hit the nail on the head! Neat stadium to watch a game, many restrooms, good food and beverage at a good price. I go to watch the game, not tv in the restrooms or Primanti Brothers, etc in the food court. Free parking right outside the stadium along with the usuall bars, etc. nearby also.
