A poster had asked that I share my thoughts on new Pitt QB commit Thomas MacVittie. Here is what I wrote earlier in the week about him:
Although I can hear what you're saying being a gamble, it's the type of gamble I would not fault a coach for taking. First, even if he doesn't pan out as a QB, I watched him play WR this past season for Moeller and that kid is a tremendous athlete - could play several positions if not QB. Second, everyone that has seen this kid throw in-person has been wowed by how he slings the football. Most expecting he has a huge senior season at QB.
I have actually seen MacVittie in-person a couple times since his junior season ended and what immediately stands out is he has great height for the position. Kind of lean right now, but the frame to add weight no problem. I saw him throw most extensively at the Best of the Midwest Camp in February and he slung it right alongside four-stars like Messiah deWeaver and Hunter Johnson. Not as polished as either of those two at this stage, but he definitely has a big arm. What he lacks i consistency and accuracy and that comes from loose mechanics - his arm action is long and his release point is out away from his head. Those things, however, are certainly correctable and are very common among younger QB's. There's nothing to suggest those aspects of his game will not improve just within the natural development of his game.
