So here's the thing, the Ivy League deciding yesterday to cancel all fall sports got me thinking. Even if certain pro leagues have some kind of season or we get some kind of college basketball season in the winter, will people really want to attend?

Now I would assume that fans for awhile might not be allowed to watch a game live but that can't be long term right? But how about if your favorite team allows fans only at 50% capacity? 25% capacity? Would you guys feel comfortable going to watch your Pitt basketball team play Duke if covid19 is still out there and there isn't a vaccine?

Honestly speaking for myself I would say NO. Even with all the measures these venues claim they will put in place I still think it would be very risky to attend games without a vaccine. Now some obviously will disagree. For me though even if the arena is claiming only 25% capacity for fans and it's safe, is it really?

For me the answer is NO. Curious to know what others think.

I can’t see how fans will be allowed in to any sporting event whether inside or out until a vaccine is readily available to everyone . Same for concerts or other large gatherings .

Once any team contact sport has an outbreak it will shut down all the others .

At this point in time why not reschedule both college bb and Fb to the spring ?

Is the health and well being of your student athletes more important than the revenue or vice versa !

What is going to be most interesting is how the government treats those who don't take the vaccine. Early numbers show 1 out of 4 says they will skip it. If that happens won't there still be some degree of spread and hospitializations. Will the government then shut down some places or put restrictions on. Believe me many young people feel invincible and will skip the vaccine.

If there is a safe and effective vaccine and people don’t wanna take it, then eff em. Shutdowns are happening in large part because people are acting irresponsibly which in turn harms others who may be doing the right thing. Once (if) there’s a vaccine and those who take it are protected, do whatever the hell you want. I couldn’t care less. Let it rip.

Hopefully there will be some kind of campaign that heavily encourages a vaccine but of course there will still be people who don’t get them. They’ll have to live with the consequences. And I’m sure there are other concerns/problems with people not being vaccinated but the main concern right now is health for the masses.

I’m with you , you can’t account for stupid .

What sane person goes to bars , mass protests , beaches or social events with a lot of people who aren’t wearing masks and social distancing and while I don’t want to see anyone get sick ....

No player , coach or anyone with personal contact with the athletes who refuses to take the vaccine when available should be barred from competing or working with the players .

Yea. Don’t get me wrong. I want everyone to be well. The healthier we all are the better off we all are. For many reasons. But once I’m insulated from the stupid, I’ll settle for that.

And I don’t agree with barring the players. Those who take the vaccine will be protected assuming it works. Those who don’t as I said above will have to face and suffer any consequences. However I did expect some organizations/teams/companies/whatever to have policies mandating the vaccine. For instance anyone who works in healthcare or for any kind of healthcare organization as it will reduce benefit costs/payouts.

Totally agree on schools, employers, etc will hopefully mandate it.

But there is a worry that if a vaccine is 70% effective (not an unusual number -- what's more unusual is small pox vaccine working 98% of the time) and, say, only 65% of people take it, we won't get to herd immunity. Then we will live in a permanent state of like a triple flu season every year killing off a certain percentage of the population, even people who did take a vaccine. So yes mandates.

Voted yes. But I really meant that it depends on various factors which would ultimately include for future seasons--

Whether Covid keeps coming around seasonally like the Flu.
Whether a vaccine is produced and proven effective.
Whether is a future need for and/or continued use of social distancing and masks and whether t would be enforced in indoor arenas.

For this coming season, however, my answer would be no.

In any event this is all pretty much hypothetical for me. I wouldn't be attending live games even if Covid had never happened due to where I live unless the team was playing a game in the DC Area (e.g., at Maryland, Georgetown, George Washington, etc.).

I truly hope enough people get it that this thing can be eradicated or reduced to smoldering embers. But who am I to violate the “but muh freedums/but muh liberties” brothers and sisters. Not to mention the vaccine truthers. I’ll live with the chip that Bill Gates implants deep within me.

King....those who refuse the vaccine could still be carriers. Require them to wear a giant "V" on their clothing??

Ha. Yea maybe. A scarlet V perhaps.

Understood. But those carrying could only infect other people who didn’t get vaccinated (again assuming it’s effective).

In general I don’t care if people like to engage in risky behavior as long as you’re not harming others. In this case it would be birds of a feather for those who choose not to get vaccinated. And in some regard I’m probably being a little short sighted. But personally my biggest concern is the short term to rid is of this monster. If/when we have a vaccine get as many people inoculated ASAP then we can tackle the rest. Maybe/hopefully more will come around with positive results and outcomes. Or mandates.

Coincidentally this came out today. Noteworthy is this said that only 50% say they’d get vaccinated. The internet and social media has certainly brought the stupid and ignorant to wider audience but I had no idea how widespread it was. And I’m sure its also been the reason for some of that same stupidity and ignorance. Makes it easier to find other lunatics with like beliefs and validates.

If there’s a vaccine and I’m vaccinated and somebody is stupid enough not to get it that’s their problem. It’s like people who smoke and get cancer and heart disease and wonder why ! My pal Forest’s mother said
“ stupid is as stupid does “.

It's a corona virus, they never get effective vaccines for those ones, so I voted yes, as everyone should because herd immunity is the only way to go.

If course I am assuming this hypothetical home game will be in 2022 with masks required.

They never had a vaccine for polio either !

Why do people believe that turning the calender to 2021 means something or there will ever be a vaccine?
Or tomorrow will never come .

I know you know just about everything, but every medical expert and the drug companies believe there will be a effective vaccine , but BbIP says otherwise . Who do I believe ?

That’s correct but there’s never been one like this so the need has never been as great. And then throw in profitability and the effort becomes greater. It might not have been worth it for any company to pursue one before. Now it is. And it’s a sad fact of the pharmaceutical/medical field to begin with. So many people get cancer so research and development is heavily funded. Treatments get rewarded. Things like ALS - not nearly as much. The costs might be more than what can be made so it never gets prioritized. If a vaccine is developed it seems likely it won’t be one and done so there’s now money to be made. I don’t doubt that there is an element of do good. But this is world wide and the potential for profits are enormous.

The Feds just dropped $1.68 billion on a biotech outfit in Gaithersburg to develop and produce a vaccine. That company is more famous for pushing their projects that end up going nowhere. P.R geniuses.

Well the only people you believe about anything are the people in their jobs. So I’m assuming you believe Trump too?

You should be a Penn State fan with the way you think.

Yea I saw that too.

And there’s also a ton of money spent for production of at least one vaccine so it’s ready to go if approved. Although I also read they better step up on the delivery mechanisms. Vaccine won’t be worth spit if it can’t be administered.

If it works it’s great. If not that money is flushed. I suppose that means there’s some optimism around it but it’s still a risk.

Yeah right , you need to check your posts , you are consistently among the most negative towards Pitt on this board .

When Trump completes medical school and his residency or finishes a PHD program in some biological science field then I’ll listen to him with regards to the latest vaccine info until then I’ll just stick with medical experts .

By the way a lot of brilliant people have gone to PSU , so I guess if someone with a degree from PSU discovers a vaccine you’d reject it ?

What exactly is the alternative ?

Fronting these guys and the others they have are a drop in the bucket to what this virus is costing the economy.

What I meant is that the actual vaccine is being produced prior to it being proven safe and effective on a larger scale. That’s never been done before I don’t believe. So if it flops that’s money down the drain.

Of course the vaccine overall has to be funded - that’s a no brainer. But producing the actual vaccine is ballsy. But it might be worth the risk.

A billion here a billion there isn’t going to make a bit of difference as long as one works . Remember the government has printing presses !

Vaccines are covered by health insurance. People who get sick because they didn't get the vaccine are not. Make the choice do what any even semi-intelligent person would do or face the potential of a lifetime of financial ruin.

"You spent two weeks in the hospital recovering. Your bill comes to $200,000. Your insurance doesn't cover any of it. Pay up."

Yea that’s funny because after I wrote it I did wonder what health insurance implications were for those who refused vaccination. I didn’t know the answer but suspected that was the case.

many of the major Insurance carriers are covering Covid testing and treatment at 100%, no deductible in and out of network.

there are exceptions as self funded employers had the option to opt out of such coverage

They are now. I'm saying that if there is a vaccine, health insurance should be required to pay for a vaccine, and if people opt out of a vaccine then their health insurance should be forbidden from covering ANY part of your bill.

If you choose to be stupid you ought to be required to face the consequences of your stupidity.

Lol being a penn state fan means you’re a lemming follower which you are.

You can’t possibly be a doctor if you couldn’t follow my post. You think everything Capel does is right, you believe everything you’re told by medical professionals when they’re dealing with something they’ve never seen before and frankly have no clue about, so one would only assume you believe everything the President does is right because he’s the President and for no other reason.

Did you follow that

No , I choose to take a coaches opinion of his players that I haven’t had the opportunity to see play over a poster who finds every negative thing to say about Pitt bb , it’s coach and it’s players . To me that makes me a rather wise fellow . Now once I see them play I’ll make up my own opinion .

Anyone expecting a bottom dweller in the ACC with absolutely no players of ACC quality on their roster to come in and without a serious bagman to outperform what JC has done so far on the court and in recruiting is delusional .

No one in right mind believes anything any politician says .

I’m sure you also have inside info and poses a complete understanding on all the current research into the treatments and the creation of a vaccine for COVID-19 . Once again I’ll do the intelligent thing and listen to the people doing the research over you .

Lol we hired this bag man you’re speaking of and many people thought we paid for Toney and Trey.

I’ll trust the coaches who watched these guys and DIDNT offer or pursue the guys we got. I don’t like beating UMASS for players, but that’s me.

You’d just be happier with a different team ....TCU . You’d be missed !

That wouldn't be a bad idea to incentivize people to take the vaccine. Insurance companies lose a lot of money on these long hospital visits. It makes sense.
