Time for an extension

I think most people knew he was coming back next season. That's a given.

I didn't see the game so I have no idea how it was played. I just saw a box score so I'm not commenting on it. Not easy getting Pitt basketball in Waterloo, Iowa.

Knowing what I know about Pitt basketball under Capel though, I'm tempering my enthusiasm and optimism. It's one game against a decent opponent, which is a start. Credit to the team and Capel for getting it done.

said every panther fan every season the last 4 years.
Lololololol.

I wanted pat canned for about the last 3 years until he made me look like an idiot this year. What I never did was meltdown after a win like you are.

He is proving it was the injuries though. They play a lot better with Horton. You would imagine if they had Nike they would be even better.

yep. but this time its different?
Program is far worse than it was with Dixon at the end but still a lot better than it was with Stallings in his year #2 at this juncture.

Capel has reopened the closed window for success just a couple of inches with the three in a row. If he can win 1-2 more through the ACC Tourney and land a few players of Burton and Gueye's capabilities from the transfer portal it might open even further with an overall winning season next year.

However that is an extremely big "IF"

With Capel, it all depends on recruiting and transfer portal success. He has yet to prove he can maneuver and become successful in recruiting (in fact he's pretty bad at recruiting), and his transfer portal savvy is unproven. That's the lifeblood of the program and he's not doing much to help.

I wouldn’t say his transfer portal savvy is unproven. He’s had mixed reviews in the portal, with Burton being a hit and Mo being one of the best hits in the country. Although I can’t imagine even Mo thought he’d be this good in the ACC

Are you hearing anything further on Femi? Still like to look elsewhere? Would be nice to keep the core intact and allow him to get into a more natural position.

Hearing nothing more, nothing less. Status quo. I would expect at least 1 of the core to not be here. That’s just how it is. Probably 2

I am struggling to remember impact transfers - Mike Cook, JWF(?) - I am sure I am forgetting some. The recent additions of Burton, Horton, and Mo - all making as much of a difference as they can. Just asking, but do you think the last seven years have given transfers the impression that this isn't the place to land (even with the portal being seemingly wide open the last few years)?

I think you are possibly failing to recognize the differences in the transfer process now.

Non-grad transfers before the Portal required approval from the school the player was transferring from. Then even if the transfer was approved, the player had to sit out a year. In some cases, intra-conference transfers had to sit 2 years. So the numbers of transfers wasn’t very great. Now any player can enter the Portal and be granted 1 time eligible to play elsewhere immediately, next season.

There are never any guarantees that a program will strike it rich with transfers. But with the Portal now, there are teams that have done it. Primarily because there are so many more players - many of them PDG ones - who are transferring for any number of reasons.

HCJC/Pitt have pretty much backed themself into a corner. Pitt MUST make a big improvement record and competitive-wise next season. At this late date, there are not many (if any) HS players capable of helping Pitt to win next season available for Pitt. So it’s likely gonna have to be with guys acquired through the Portal after the season that Pitt has to rely on. Or bust. It’s all up to Jeff Capel to get it done in time for next season now. 🤷‍♂️

No use in beating that dead horse. Everyone who watches this program and knows anything at all about college basketball knows that Capel is, at best, a very poor coach and he's not the man for this job. Just have to let this play out the rest of the year and next year and see what decision Lyke makes in 2023.
