Tom Watson from Texas, anyone want to read something interesting about our New OC?

-Through 9 games last year, Texas averaged over 37 points per game, good enough for 11th best in the P5. That included scoring 50 on Notre Dame, 31 on Oklahoma State, 40 on Oklahoma, and 35 on Baylor. Pretty good for an offense most would agree lighting up teams like Oklahoma.

And how the wheels fell off.

-In the last 3 games of the season, Texas averaged 17 points per game against West Virginia, Kansas, and TCU. The offense had 11 turnovers to finish the last 3 games, including 6 interceptions. Shane Buchele, a true freshmen, was the starter all year. Combined with 18 penalties to finish the season, along with losing Chris Warren for the season 4 games in.

-Yea, my theory looks good. Charlie Strong's QB recruiting was a major disappointment and disaster, and the OC still almost saved his ass in Texas.

-Liking our OC more and more.

Am I missing something? Shawn Watson wasn't even a coach at Texas last year.

-Watson recruited those players to Texas. including that freshmen QB that led to the turnaround. That QB's entire family went to Oklahoma, and Watson pulled him to Texas. Here's the story

This is like calling attention to what happened in....SWEDEN.

-How is it? Without talent or speed, you are done. At least Watson got Texas a QB.

--Imagine if TMAC put up 3000 yards this year as a freshmen. And he was closed by Narduzzi.

-Talent and Speed...

so steel i am curious....

with all of your slurping over TMAC......is it your prediction that he will start this year? Or will Max Browne be our QB?

I mean after all.....".talent and speed" would suggest that TMAC is the second coming of Deshaun Watson......

So, what say you?

Just like Pitt rushed for 600 yards a game last year?

You are delusional.

Do you fee more or less confident that TMac will put up 3000 yards than you did with your prediction that The hoops frosh (JK - too lazy to spell his last name) would step on the court and be better than senior James Robinson?

Well, that's where you're wrong. It clearly says Tom Watson in the title, not Shawn Watson. He's obviously talking about the legendary golfer who dabbles in the coordination of offenses during his spare time.

Try to keep up.

It is much the same as Lon Chaney getting credit for Pitt's offense last year and not Ron Canada, legendary actor

wait, what's this 3,000 yard season from McVittie all about? is Steel really predicting McVittie will throw for 3k this year?

-No, the point of this whole thread was Charlie Strong's recruiting at Texas at QB was a complete disaster, and 1 recruit turned the Texas offense around, a freshmen QB that Watson recruited. Bill Billicheik would have failed with the QB's on that roster. I said imagine if TMAC could match that QB from Texas as a freshmen here. Because Narduzzi closed him as a recruit. Nowhere did I say he will match that production as a freshmen. I never even made a prediction as to who will start at QB next year.

So who gets the credit for Pitt's offense last year? Canada didn't recruit them.

-Canada, Narduzzi, the line, but most importantly above all of them the skill players. Peterman for being a game manager too. But the skill players like Henderson taking 100 yard kickoffs to the endzone and Weah catching the ball for 10 yards then running for 80 made the biggest difference. Homerun players with Elite speed.

Speed isn't everything! My favorite PITT player:

Tyrique Jarrett The PITT Death Star
DL

6' 3" 335 23 Senior 3V Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

40 yard Speed = 1 day/2 hours/3 mins/10 secs
Actually he was very speedy the first two steps, which at nose guard is what you need to be. Of course like all us fat guys the farther we run the slower we get. Do they even make interior lineman run 40's? They should run 15's and different agility drills to show change of direction.

I agree with you about his quickness for his first 2-4 steps which for a NG is good enough to beat some OL guys and stop the run cold! I liked watching him play!

His 40 time of over 1 day is irrelevant since he probably wanted to stop for a snack!

I played NG in a 4-3 monster D many many years ago which favored smaller, faster, strong, players, with like you mentioned lateral speed and the ability to follow pulling guards or defeat the blocks of pulling guards.

Aston added a tremendous dimension too. Can't imagine a full back being used so creatively especially in this era. Canada imagined it, but Aston had to deliver it...and he did time and again.

Steel started Fake News before there was such a thing.

Well, people can naysay all they want, but the main theme of the thread, despite a corny name for it, is Narduzzi is recruiting speed. That was evident last year. We have probably 6 guys that can effectively run the jet sweeps and even a lineman! We certainly increased speed this year at QB,TE, RB and WR, can that really be denied? Now, the guys we had in those spots last year were all-american type guys, dont get me wrong, and I dont know if the faster versions will be better... and I am not saying that they will be better. But, you cant deny we are recruiting speed and making the team faster.

Wannstedt preached to play faster, and recruited the same way and we won. I think Narduzzi is recruiting speed as well, and the one field results have been good.

Incorrect. The intended theme of the original post in the thread was a misguided attempt by a misguided poster to credit Shawn Watson's OCing with the offensive success Texas had through the first nine games last season. The OP clearly didn't realize that Watson wasn't at Texas last year, and when informed of that, attempted (feebly) to save face by claiming that what he really meant was that Texas' success was due to Watson having recruited Texas' freshman QB.

Watson's offenses at Texas actually performed very poorly and he was demoted from OC after Texas scored 3 points in the 2015 season-opening loss to ND. Texas then let Watson go after the 2015 season and installed a totally new offensive system under Art Briles disciple Sterile Gilbert in 2016. Watson was basically considered to be a disaster at Texas.

Here's hoping we get the Louisville Watson and not the Texas one. He said he wants to keep the Canada playbook, which would be a good thing.

Correct. And he tried to spin it that Watson recruited the QB, even though he didn't mention Watson's involvement in that in the OP and only mentioned the QB to notate him as a reason for the late season offensive problems and "how the wheels feel off".

In fact, he actually mentioned how the QB recruiting was a "major disappointment and disaster" under Strong, despite the fact Watson had been the OC the ENTIRE TIME for that recruiting.

You literally couldn't talk out of both sides of your mouth anymore.

-Theme of this offseason.

1) Pitt is fast and continues to recruit Elite speed, athleticism, and large players. We wont sniff slow players and the offers to smurfs are limited, notice Pitt slow playing all the PA WR's in this class.

2) Pitt continues to target Florida, with further proof of bringing in a Florida DL coach that recruits Florida and knows Florida well

3) Pitt's QB recruiting has been respectable, but we needed a boost for future QB's. Enter Watson, who saved the Texas offense with a good freshmen QB

-If Pitt beats Penn State, the BWI board will be a circus show. Get your popcorn ready if it happens
