Potentially the worst 120 minutes I have ever wasted on a sporting event. See ya later Cam Wright, you won't be missed.

Nope. That term was coined from the show Happy Days. Not familiar with how Howie uses that term.

Jon Hein is a cast member on the howard stern show but previously he created a website called "jump the shark" and is credited with coining the term about happy days and other shows "breaking point" into bad tv many years ago. He sold the website to TV Guide for millions which freed him up to pursue his radio career. I'm sure other stern fans got the reference. Bababooey.

Everyone gets the reference...it's just misused here.

We "jumped the shark" this season when we lost to Hawaii.

Yeah, I am having a hard time coming up with an analogy on how a sports team can "jump the shark". Maybe if they played some crazy new defense in desparation, started all three walk ons. It would have to be something like that. As I understand it, it was Fonzie jumping sharks in a leather jacket on his motorcycle, Flintstones adding Gazoo or whatever his name was, The Office trying to add Will Farrell or Jim Carrey after Michael Scott was leaving, something like that.

Maybe a team having open tryouts with fans right before the game.

Isaiah Epps subbed in for free throws, maybe?

That season, for sure.

Iasiah Epps was bad coaching, he didn't do it to garner attention to a declining club.

JD burned more energy on the sideline than the entire Pitt team did last night. This team down the stretch was just bad and last night's effort was plain pathetic. I waited to post my thoughts until today so I could be more rational in my thinking when making a statement. IMO this team just quit on a good die hard coach that wanted to win so bad. No excuses about young team, need more talent, ran out of gas down the stretch. That is all hogwash based on the effort and style of play this team has shown. JD is in a fix with this club for next year and beyond. This team will never get better with the cast of players they currently have. Need to cut a lot of players lose and bring in a different type player that has more heart and determination to win. Just to many guys with the wrong attitude and style of play that won't get it done.

JD needs to really think things out because another season next year like this one he is going to have to start looking over his shoulder. The security is not going to be there as is now. He is going to be under a lot of fire to straighten things out. This program is not in good shape with the cast of players they have coming back.

He's not really in a fix. He needs to take Dakich's advice (I can't believe I just typed that)...
"Who is with me, and who is against me?"

Anyone who blatantly ignored his coaching...needs released. I don't care if its Artis or Young or Jeter, or Robinson (it's not JRob).

I would rather play next season with 8 players who are bought in than with 13 scholarships and 5 malcontents.

Yes, Jumping the Shark does not at all apply here. Maybe if Jamie set up a scrimmage with the Harlem Globetrotters but not losing a game in he NIT.

i used the analogy for three reasons:
1. jamie let this team not have a single decent big because of repeated recruiting misses
2. jamie could not get this team to play defense at all
3. jamie allowed himself to depend on scoriing from a shooting guard that let himself get suspended for the season hanging the team out to dry.

the shark jumped this season as just about every team had their best shooting performance of the year against us. there will be middle aged guys in 20 years with news clippings and pictures framed for the game they had against pitt in 2014-2015.

First of all, #3 is stupid. Stuff like that always happens. Happens to Pitino, Boeheim, everyone.

None of those meet the definition of what jumping the shark. It can be called bad planning, bad coaching, bad leadership, but there is absolutely no tie in to sharks or any other sea animals at all.

Jumping the shark:
Jumping the shark is an Jon Hein that was used to describe the moment in the evolution of a television show when it begins a decline in quality, signaled by a particular scene, episode, or aspect of a show in which the writers use some type of gimmick in an attempt to keep viewers' interest, which is taken as a sign of desperation, and is seen by viewers to be the point at which the show had strayed irreparably from its original premise.

The Globetrotters example was perfect. Nothing you list applies.

Not a single decent big?

Mike Young, at 6'9", 230#, is a good big. He put up good numbers. Now, they certainly do need more than him, but saying he let the team not have a single decent big man is grossly overexaggerating the issue.

According to the board here, the team has no good guards, and not a single decent big... it's amazing that they made the NIT, and were on the bubble in late February. Maybe Jamie Dixon is just that good of a coach.

mehinpgh - While Cam Wright had shortcomings on the court, he served as a wonderful ambassador for the university. With all of the examples of what is wrong with "student athletes", Cam should be recognized as someone who did great things with his opportunity. People like Cam should be celebrated, and will be missed. Some things are bigger than buckets.

you are absolutely right that cam wright was a great student and great ambassador for pitt...basketball player not so much...if this was the all star student pitt board, i would agree with you 100%, but this is a basketball board...

well, i was referring to bigs that play defense like a center. young is a great forward and an asset to this team, but he is not a center in any way.

Maybe the black uniforms was jumping the shark?
SOUF, from the Jon Heim-Stern Show-Baba Booey-Hank the Angry Dwarf context, the black uniforms may have been the shark jumping episode for Jamie.

Great discover.
