In fairness, I dont know how highly Pitt was recruiting him but considering his ranking, I'd assume Pitt would have wanted him.

Roman Catholic (Wanamaker's HS) PG Tony Carr picked PSU over the following schools:

Pitt
Georgetown
Indiana
Maryland
Temple
Memphis
Stanford
and many others

His rankings are as follows:

Scout: #39
ESPN: #52
Rivals: #53
247: #53

PSU is also the favorite for his Top 100 teammate, Lamar Stevens. I'm going to tell you what, it is beyond frustrating to see Penn State basketball out-recruit us (on paper, of course) these last few years. Chambers, after doing absolutely nothing at PSU and possibly coaching for his job is recruiting about as well as anyone in the country, all things being equal (if you know what I mean).

I have no idea how Chambers is getting all these inner city Philly kids to want to spend 4 years in State College but he's doing it. Whether they will win any games is another story but the fact is these are Philly players that should be going to Pitt, not PSU.

Also, Dylan Painter eliminated Pitt but kept PSU on his list. What a bad start to the recruiting week. Losing basketball recruiting battles to Penn State infuriates me.

A lot of us make a lot of excuses for recruiters (in both football and basketball) but when you look at PSU basketball recruiting and Kentucky football recruiting, you can easily see that the game has changed......and that should be to Pitt's credit in both sports because we're seeing programs come out of the woodwork in both sports to have great classes.

Before calling it a bad start it would be interesting to see what Pitt's real interest was. Not making excuses, as at least on the boards things look bad, but I would love to hear the players reasons for picking one school over another. Maybe it is about playing time and how they see themselves fitting in. Maybe this staff told them they are not their first choice. Again before jumping to all these conclusions it would be interesting to hear from both sides.

Well, Pitt offered a scholarship so if he had announced Pitt yesterday, I'm 100% positive, Pitt would not have told him "no" and pulled the scholarship. Now, like I said, we dont know how hard they recruited him but if they didn't, it could very well be because he didnt have much interest to Pitt.

Our recruiting is just all over the place. It used to make our on the I95 corridor between DC and NYC and get Top 50-125 kids there. That's when we were most successful.

Our recent recruits have been from:

Georgia (played HS ball on Long Island)
Ohio (Florida JUCO
WPIAL
WPIAL
WPIAL (JUCO transfer)
Florida via JUCO
Raleigh
Raleigh via JUCO
Baltimore (Artis seems like an old-school Pitt player, offensively at least)
WPIAL via New Jersey

I dont care where we get players from if they can play but I think all Pitt fans realize that our recruiting is literally all over the place and the primary cause for Pitt's downturn. There's no excuses here. I dont want to hear about the ACC or playing on Raycom or whatever. We need to hire some big-time recruiters and live on that I95 corridor. Then, if you cant beat out low-end Big Ten schools or mid-level Big East schools, you have real problems.

another chapter in the "Death of Dixon"

That's going too far. Dixon is too good of a coach to let that happen. However, his recruiting failures are really adding up and if that day ever comes and people around the nation wonder, "man, what happened to Dixon over at Pitt, he had everything rolling." The answer may be that he simply couldn't recruit well enough.

Penn state might have a legit (at least decent) team in a year or two. Maybe they'll make the NIT or tourney for a change. We'll see if Chambers can coach the talented people he got in 2015's (this year's) class and those coming in for the next one 2016's.
If they get Carr's highly recruited teammate, chances of making the NCAA's within the next few years will go up even more. But, we'll see....

Psu is not the favorite for stevens, iu is. While carr is "ranked" highly, his final schools were a step down from stevens. Just a different feel, he seems to want a brighter light and have more interest from stronger programs.

Carr and pitt diverged a while ago. Could be he didnt have an intererst maybe they were too slow ...

This isnt "the start" w him and painter.

No doubt this is a SUPER important class and jd was too late to get engaged. But, at no point had the Panthers been in the final 2 or three w these two and neither are make or break guys.

Very good reason to be skeptical, but again, this isnt any kind of defining moment.

Yea I don't really care WHO Pitt gets that is talented, just that they can get SOME talented kids from anywhere.
Hope they do that and do it soon. If not, once Artis and Young's class graduates, could be many more years of NIT's (and CBI's)...

PSU may not get Stevens but Chambers is really making Philly a priority. It is completely baffling to me how inner-city basketball players would want to play their college ball in State College and the midwest but Chambers is selling them.

Honestly, the second Chambers gets fired up there, I hope we're on the phone with him to be the Associate HC. This is the kind of Associate HC a program like Pitt needs. A former HC who was a strong recruiter.

Ya know, this KID must be an IDIOT for choosing PSU not only over us... but Georgetown, Maryland, Temple, etc.

Maybe he wants to be a little closer to home and/ or loves the campus... Who knows... Penn state somehow had their number one recruiting class ever this year. And this pickup will certainly help next year's one. You can look at some of the talented people they got on Verbalcommits and espn or rivals.

Well, it's been around 10 years or so since they last made the NCAA Tourney. So, maybe they are getting up for their next 1 in 10 appearance.

I think chambers is a bit wired in there. Agree pretty strongly about the need for jd to have a stronger second, but I get the sense jd is por commited w bk, smoke and even barton.
