Fun to watch good, solid teams play other good, solid teams. What sticks out?

They can shoot the ball
They pass the ball
They move without the ball
They screen on and off the ball

Pitt does none of these well, and some they don't even make a concerted attempt.

We won't be in the tourney for at minimum another 3 years, assuming this staff is canned next year.

I spent 12 hours at PPG and here are my thoughts which are similar to yours:

- you need a PG. Period. If you dont have a PG, you are done. No chance. None.

- The teams at PPG mostly weren't great shooting teams and didn't shoot well yesterday. But their offenses are a thing of beauty. Passing, moving, cutting, screening. They look well-organized and disciplined. Capel, I don't know if he runs an offense but it doesn't look like he does.

- not a ton of pick and roll yesterday

- a lot of 4 out, 1 in the paint and having your big get a bucket. Cockburn, DeSouza (Chatt), White (Houston), Jemison (UAB), Liddell (OSU), and Delaware actually had a few good bigs. The parents of one were sitting near us and I so wanted to mention to them that Pitt needed another big but that's probably an NCAA violation and I didn't want to do any more damage to the program than Barnes and Heather.

Having a quality big opens up so so much. These bigs saw a good bit of doubling but it was a late double. Hugley has to learn how to handle the double and its imperative we surround him with shooters. No one in college basketball can guard Hugley 1 on 1. He made Bacot look like his son. My goal would be to get a PG and get a shooter or 2. I dont care if the shooter can walk. Stick him in the corner and let him make 3s like layups all day.

Come on bro. Hyperbolize much?

And good tournament teams play defense and rebound. Pitt hasn't done that for 6 years now and counting. Next year will be 7 years at Pitt with none of what it takes to play in the NCAAT.

Wait. Aren't you the one who poo pooed the PG Cappie is supposedly after cause he didn't shoot a high enough percentage from 3 for your liking? Glad you spent 12 hours at PPG to realize that what this team needs more than anything is a true PG, regardless of how much he can score. It is no coincidence that this program has not been good since we last had a true PG, James Robinson.

We need a shooter though. If you get a bad shooting PG who averaged 7 PPG in A10, you better darn well have some shooters or you have no chance.

So to recap:

- no PG, no chance

- PG but Femi and Burton on the perimeter - no chance

Well, there's a lot this team needs. But this program needs a PG.

a true pg who also shoots 39% from 3 and 75% from the free throw line ain't coming to PItt!
FT shooting is overrated. Not worried about that. And you may be right. But then we have no chance.

We need a PG and a shooter. If we dont get a shooter, the PG better be a shooter.

We need players willing to play defense like Au'Diese Toney did tonight vs NM State. Boy did we miss that.
Let’s be honest here:
X was the 2nd best player on a tourney team
Toney is a starter/defensive stopper on a sweet 16 team
Champ is in the NBA/G League
Horton was in his proper spot of being a shooter/4th option
They had the guy now everyone thinks is a savior in Nike
They had the guy who everyone thought outside of me was better than X in Femi

and they won 6 ACC games.

btw, remember when I said that Capel saying Horton was the best scorer in the ACC during his redshirt year it was the most absurdly stupid thing I’ve ever heard and everyone ridiculed me… “why would he lie”. “But Vader says”..

You’ve lost all credibility on this board with anybody that has paid attention.

Just create another new handle yet again for your own sake.

Yes watching these tourney games it is obvious we need to recruit or teach players to shoot well and pass well! These lead to points! Simplistic but we do not seem to be able to do these!

The better recruits and players in the portal aren't blind. They see that players we had at one point who weren't doing that well at Pitt have gone on and done much better in different programs. Some are playing in the NCAAT and shining. These recruits and portal guys know they won't get to do that at Pitt. At least not until we get a coach who is competent. That isn't happening for at least 1 more year.

The team was good enough to make the NCAAT. They were in brackets after beating Duke. Didn't need to close up shop after that

The funny thing is what you said is true but it is also true for youth basketball too. It isn’t that freaking hard. That’s what is so crazy about having 4 former head coaches and they can’t teach those things.

Pick and rolls on the ball don’t work because so many players can guard multiple positions. What is key are the off the ball screens as you said.

Agree. This isn't a complicated game at all. Yet, we don't have one coach on our entire coaching staff that seems capable of teaching any of the basics, if they even know what the basics are. I don't think they do, from all indications. Or they don't care.

What's striking watching the NCAAT is how some of these teams that were at or near the bottom not that long ago are now making a run at the Sweet 16. And even the ones that just got in, just watching them play the game contrasts so glaringly from anything we've seen from Pitt in the last 6 years, especially the last 2 years. They pass the ball, share it unselfishly, have great vision, rebound and defend, and can score points when they need to. There is no excuse that Pitt can't have a coach who can do the same. The problem is we have a coach who is full of excuses. He's such a victim and he makes sure everyone knows it.
