With everything the "transfer portal" has brought us, why hasn't this have the same effect on college football? I do see there are some kids moving around, with many of them grad transfers, but why not the mass exodus like basketball? Maybe I'm not paying too much attention to what is going on with the football players, but 800+ kids in the basketball "portal" seems like a lot.

Thanks for any input.

IMO, it’s a two-fold answer: Not only are there more D1 basketball schools than there are D1 football schools (especially if you only consider FBS), meaning there’s going to naturally be more players transferring, but they statistically have a better chance at getting immediate playing time in basketball than in football. In basketball, there are 13 scholarship players fighting for five starting jobs, or a 2.6:1 ratio. In FBS football, there are 85 scholarship players fighting for 22 starting jobs, or about a 3.6:1 ratio.
