TribLIVE High School Sports Network streaming WPIAL Championships

One public school out of the three games today.
Ok, I'll play this game too (even though I don"t have a horse in this race. FYI - I graduated from a public high school.)

24 WPIAL schools will play for championships on Friday and Saturday (Boys & Girls).

20 of those are public high schools.

First of all, that's a bit misleading. There is only one 6A private school in boys basketball, and there aren't any in 6A girls basketball. There are no 5A private schools in boys basketball, and there are only two girls 5A private schools. There is one 4A private school in boys basketball, and there is also one girls 4A private school. So you wouldn't expect many private schools in the big classification games.

HOWEVER, I'm not sure where you are getting your 20-4 split from. It's clearly not correct. In boys, you have 3A Lincoln Park versus North Catholic, so that's two. In 2A you have OLSH versus Serra, so we are already at four. And in 1A you have Vincentian versus Nazareth Prep, so that's already six and we haven't gotten to the girls yet.

In the girls you have North Catholic in the 4A game, Shady Side in the 3A game and OLSH in the 2A game. That's three more, for a total of 9 private schools, not 4.

My count did not include the 5 private schools that played on Thursday and were already accounted for in his posting. I clearly stated that my count was for the upcoming games on Friday and Saturday.

I clearly stated that my count was for the upcoming games on Friday and Saturday.

But it's clearly not. Because there are six classes in both boys and girls. That means 12 games. That means 24 teams. So if you already knew that you weren't counting the Thursday games how on earth did you come up with 24 schools playing on Friday and Saturday? Here's a hint, there aren't 24 schools playing on Friday and Saturday. There are 18. So either you got it wrong by not accounting for the Thursday games or you got it wrong because you couldn't count to 18. I'll let you decide which it is.

I inadvertently added the District 6 games that were included in the broadcast schedule that I found. My mistake, thank you for catching that.

Corrected: WPIAL schools competing on Friday & Saturday - 9 games x 2 schools = 18 total schools:
14 public schools
4 private schools

Transfers. Public vs Private. Just do away with HS sports if it pains people that much. My god.

Little Single A Hickory High School beat Big School, Private Giant Indianapolis Central Catholic. If they can do it, so can PA schools.

6 classes. 4 geographically-based. 2 non-geographically based. The 6 state champs play a Tournament of Champions at the end. Its not hard.

Wow, private schools sure dominate the lower classes.Like a former college teammate of mine whos team is still playing told me, "Pizza I only have to get 1 good player a year!"He never said how he gets that good player to come to his school?

That’s like saying because Chaminade beat UVA and Ralph Sampson that D2 schools should be able to play with ranked D1 schools

The problem is at the small enrollments. Asking schools with 50 kids in a class to compete with this. Should not be allowed to play at 3 A or lower. Numbers are not there.

Asking schools with 80 boys (grades 10-12) who all have to live in 1 or 2 towns to compete with a schools who can take kids from almost anywhere in Western PA is simply crazy. Heck, I remember when Greene County's Scott Orndoff made the 2 hour round trip each day to Seton LaSalle.

But if Scott Ordnoff stayed in whatever Green County school district, would he have gotten a scholarship to Pitt? Or anywhere? Would Rashard Wheeler if he stayed at Wilkinsburg? Transfers helps smart kids, band kids, get into colleges. Why shouldn't athletes be afforded the same opportunity?

Again, IF the the family moves into a district, fine...but catholic schools should not be allowed to have such a massive advantage.

Also, I can tell you, when it comes to college auditions, it makes zero difference where you went to school music wise.

I agree. You should be allowed to attend any school you want and be eligible immediately. If the Orndoffs couldnt afford Catholic school and wanted to play at Upper St. Clair and "rented an apartment" there, he should be able to play immediately. I dont care if they bought a billboard to declare they are moving for athletic intent.
