Pitt continued its out-of-state efforts on Tuesday, following Monday’s adventures with another day that saw most of the staff in another state.
On Monday, five Pitt coaches were in New Jersey; on Tuesday, the focus shifted to Florida, where five Pitt coaches touched down and started a full day of visits. Head coach Pat Narduzzi was in the Sunshine State, as were defensive coordinator Josh Conklin, tight ends coach Tim Salem, receivers coach Kevin Sherman and defensive line coach Tom Sims.
- One interesting new name is Kevince Brown. The defensive end target from Orlando Christian Prep has good size and a decent offer sheet - N.C. State, Oregon State and Rutgers are in pursuit - and he got visits at school and at his home on Tuesday. I’m hearing he is targeting a date in January for an official visit.
- Brown and Stephon Zayas drew Sims to the Sunshine State on Tuesday, as both are defensive end targets for the Pitt staff (there are a number of DE’s the coaches are pursuing). Zayas also had an in-home visit with Pitt on Tuesday.
- Pitt wants to add at least two more defensive ends to the class, so guys like Zayas and Brown and Deslin Alexandre, who will get a visit on Wednesday, are pretty important.
- On the offensive side, Sherman was checking on a few receivers Tuesday. He was joined by Narduzzi and Salem for a visit with receiver commit Dontavius Butler, who will take his official visit to Pitt next weekend. Butler has talked about taking official visits to other schools; I’m sure the Pitt coaches would like to talk him out of those plans.
UPDATE: Butler's visit will be in January. And his visit on Tuesday was just with Narduzzi and Salem.
- The staff also stopped by the schools of receivers Carmoni Green and D’Jaundrae Edwards. Edwards might be slightly higher on Pitt’s board, or perhaps there’s just more urgency since he’s planning to enroll early. Either way, he most recently told me that his official visit to Pitt will be this weekend; I don’t think that’s still the plan, but I’m trying to confirm with him if the visit will be next weekend (I assume it will be).
UPDATE: From what I'm hearing, Edwards will be visiting next weekend.
- Not all of the Pitt coaches were in Florida; Andre Powell was in Maryland for a visit with four-star linebacker target Nathan Proctor. Powell visited Proctor’s school and had an in-home visit, from what I’m told, and it sounds like things went well. The key is finding a way to get Proctor on campus for an official visit. Rivals.com Mid-Atlantic analyst Adam Friedman reported Tuesday that Proctor has official visits scheduled for all four available weekends starting next week.
From what I’m told, Pitt probably won’t have any visitors on campus this weekend, so the goal has to be to get Proctor to either take a mid-week visit or get him to switch one of those visits to Pitt. So there’s some work to be done there.
- Two other Pitt commits got visits from the Pitt coaches on Tuesday: Rob Harley was in Alabama to visit with linebacker commit Cam Bright, who will take his official visit the weekend of Jan. 13-15. And John Peterson was local for a visit with offensive line commit Gabe Houy; Houy hasn’t scheduled an official visit yet as he tries to set a date that doesn’t interfere with Upper St. Clair’s basketball schedule. He could visit next weekend or wait until January.
- In case you missed Ryan’s report, Josh Conklin’s visits with Lakeland (Fla.) standouts Damarri Mathis and Anthony Davis went very well. So well, in fact, that Mathis and Davis will be taking their official visits next weekend. That’s the latest in a series of pretty big developments with Mathis and Davis, starting with the news that both have significant interest in Pitt and continuing with Mathis’ decision on Monday afternoon to decommit from South Carolina.
- We’ve confirmed a couple visits for Wednesday so far, including a trio of defensive ends: Kofi Wardlow, Zion Debose and Deslin Alexandre are all expecting the Pitt coaches to have school visits and in-home visits. Pitt linebacker commit Kyle Nunn is planning for a visit, too, and more names will be added throughout the day.
