Television anywhere? I already have seen the West Virginia University Sports Network (aka Root Sports) is broadcasting two WVU BB games this week. It seems like since we moved to the ACC, we have less accessibility to broadcast outlets

I know SMF can wax on for hours about the logistics of Tier 3 rights, but I also think this is the result of an incredibly lazy athletic department by the previous regime.

We don't own our tier 3 rights, so we couldn't make a deal for them like West Virginia did. You know, the one where they buy television time from Root to make sure their games get shown.

The previous regime has absolutely nothing at all to do with it.

Why don't we? What good does this have if you don't have control?

ACC sold their Tier 3 rights to ESPN. Big 12 chose to not sell their Tier 3 rights to any providers and have the schools fend for themselves, allegedly due to Texas and the Longhorn Network.

Every ACC game, including Tuesday is.....at a minimum.....on ESPN3.

This is why I dont think there is this great cost or great risk in starting a network. ESPN is doing all the games anyway. It really wouldnt cost ESPN any more money if Tuesday's game was on an ACC channel instead of ESPN3. Same announcers, same production crew, same per diem.

I would bet that is the contract with EPSN.... that, if the games are to be broadcast on ESPN3, they can't be broadcast anywhere's else (except that, with games on the ACC Network, ESPN3 broadcasts them also except blocked out in areas served by ACC Network stations).

So, we get the games on ESPN3, the ACC Network, or somewhere else. In any case all the games are broadcast one place or another.

The problem is, some people don't get... cannot get... ESPN3.

Anyone that has DirecTV can get the ESPN3 feed online, I didn't know that until this year. I previously couldn't get ESPN3 because my ISP wouldn't pay ESPN's fee to subscribe.

There on ESPN 3 for a reason, other than Pitt fans these games simply are that attractive on a national level.

DirecTV just started supporting ESPN3 during last season, actually, relatively late last season, in mid-February.

If someone has a Roku or Chromecast, they can get ESPN3 if they can "borrow" a login from a friend whose ISP carries ESPN3. My daughter moved to Cincy in January and I started gettjng gaes using her info and, voila, DIrecTV finally came thru and I'm legal again.

Sure, I can watch the game tomorrow through ESPN3. And I understand this, but somewhere the ACC and Pitt have fallen out of favor of ESPN, so when they line up slots for their traditional broadcast games, while the Big 10 in particularly always get slots.

I just find it ironic we have less broadcast exposure in the ACC than the much maligned Big East.

These types of games were almost never on TV in the BE days at all- or only for locals on whatever Pittsburgh local channel, if that.

So- I find the complaints that nationally available , versus not-broadcast or only on a Pittsburgh local station..to be pretty silly.

If you haven't invested $24 in a Chromecast, you're missing out.

Difference is that ESPN used to sell the ESPN3 games to local RSNs like FS Pgh/Root. As ESPN3 as grown in popularity, they dont do that anymore. So, yes, there are much fewer cupcake games on local TV, but that's the decision ESPN made for everybody. In a sense, ESPN is using the ACC to grow their online platform......but the ACC and Swoffy sold their souls for peanuts just because ESPN said they'd keep Raycom in business.

The conference games are all televised like they were in the BE, not much difference except we get more syndicated and ESPNU games in the ACC because we havent been that good.

I feel like the BE was more maligned because it was a horrible source of cash than it was because of exposure (or lack thereof). For a school whose sole source of cash is the Conference money, that's important for Pitt.

I mean, we've seen the difference ACC money has made relative to BE money just in this past year. The new administration is still subsidizing the athletic department in the same amount as the old administration, yet they're able to spend more overall because the cash inflow from the Conference is so significantly greater.

I think Pitt is (finally) fully funded. They re-did the locker rooms for football and basketball. The coaching budgets are on par with similar P5 schools.

Well.....I must admit I come with a big of egg on my face and embarrassment. The reason why I posted this was Pitt/St. Joes, pretty attractive game, right? You know, the Big Five, Phil Martelli, the Hawks, Delonte West, Jameer Nelson........

I didn't realize it was St. Joes of Indiana. Whoops.

So....my bad.

I heard it is St. Joe's in Natrona Heights, and Bob Tatrn is calling the game.

Only if Joe Falsetti is doing the color commentary. Those were the best, or worse.

As god as my witness, I was surprised because I didn't remember us scheduling St. Joes. I was thinking "wow, that is pretty aggressive scheduling from the get by Jamie". Then the other day I heard someone reference to "Pumas" and thought...."wait..."

This game seems to have been the sort of late addition that some were hoping for to replace the Gonzaga game that wasn't completed.

There's a bit of a mystery about this game because reportedly, the St Joe's website originally called this an exhibition. They are D-2 and we will get basically no RPI credit for them. I think it IS possible this was SUPPOSED to be our second exhibition game, until the scrimmage with Georgetown came about.

While there is always the possibility of an embarrassing upset, this should be a glorified scrimmge. Some schools and even a conference or two have adopted the practice recently of scheduling a couple D-2 games to pad the win column but since there is no RPI bounce, we really have rarely scheduled D-2 opponents. So, the question remains, why was this game scheduled?

There was a debate on this when the schedule was first announced. Nobody really has the answer. I think my theory about it originally being the second exhibition is as likely as intentionally scheduling a team that literally does nothing for our RPI.

So, the question remains, why was this game scheduled?

Alternative theories:
  1. They had $XM to spend on opponents, and this one is cheap.
  2. They had a specific hole this week that they couldn't find any good RPI teams to fill, so they chose not to pick a 300+ team to drag them down. Maybe someone else backed out late.

I think it's obvious. They had a hole in the schedule that needed filled for a game two days after we returned from the trip to Japan. They wanted to schedule a game that would be an easy win without screwing up the RPI like scheduling a bad D1 team does. So the obvious solution was to bring in a D2 team.

Incidentally, as far as the exhibition part of it goes, for St Joe's this game IS an exhibition game. The real mystery about tonight's game is how a game can be a regular season game for one team and an exhibition game for the other?

Bingo. Totally nailed it. After the long trip to Okinawa and back, they wanted a basic walk through to combat jetlag, and a DII school actually counts less against RPI than say scheduling, NJIT or a Youngstown State.

I don't know the answer but Chaminade is Division II and they always count on everyone's schedule who plays them .

Sorry, old friend, but D2 teams do not count towards RPI.

The school who plays the D2 team counts the win in the record they show, but if you look at RPI sites, the win total will always be one less because RPI calculations do not include the D2 games.

This game STILL shows as an exhibition for them on their web site.

I really get the impression that this was SUPPOSED to be our second exhibition game but the trip to Okinawa messed that up so they moved it to this slot.

Right now... it looks like an exhibition for them and a real game (sans RPI affect) for us... which is strange.

Then why did they schedule Central Arkansas game? Even Youngstown St. would be better and they are just down the road not too far. Central Arkansas was one of the worst teams, if not the worst team for RPI last year. Pitt should be able to do better.

Does the NCAA selection committee even count a DII school as a win when selecting?? I know they think of it as nothing really but do they even count it as a W???

I don't think the committee worries too much about W-L record as it's sort of naturally captured within the whole RPI/SOS/BPI calculations.

So, they'll probably count it as a win, but it won't help or hurt Pitt's case because they're looking beyond W/L anyway when making decisions.

Ok, that's what I thought
Thx

Go Pitt

Oh, I was listening to Hillgrove and Groat while watching the game on ESPN3.... the former was running about 10 seconds or so ahead of the latter... and at one point Hillgrove mentioned that StJ was counting the game as an exhibition and the NCAA allows them to do that so... I guess that is that.

Per the TV announcers, counts as exhibition for St. Joe's but not as an exhibition for Pitt. NCAA is apparently okay with that dichotomy.

Pitt vs Gonzaga was announced mid-season LAST YEAR. There was no surprise about when that game would be played. Dixon said in the post-game that he wanted a really easy contest after the return trip, in case there was a bit of a hangover. Steinbrink tweeted that a few guys were sick or something, so that was probably a great idea.
