-So in 2015 Pitt threw the football to Boyd 150 times

2015 stats

Boyd-926 yards, 6 TD's
Ford-505 yards, 2 TD's

-If Pitt threw the ball to Ford 150 times in a season (which would be completely idiotic) , does anyone here NOT think Ford would not break 1000 yards in 2016? Well, here is Ford's tape from 2015. I see him catching deep balls against every team on the schedule from Notre Dame, to Louisville, to North Carolina. Have a look at it. Isn't it going to be nice to actually have balance throwing the ball on offense, as opposed to trying to jam the ball into Boyd every single play of the game?

-We need to replace Boyd's 900 yards and 6 TD's. Ill predict Ford replaces 500 of those yards and comes close to breaking 1000 yards this year, and he replaces all of Boyd's TD's this year using a power run game with constant play action and utilizing a deep threat down the field to stretch the defense instead of Jim Chaney's 4 yard pass plays to Boyd, and Chaney's complete refusal to try and stretch the defense.

-Ford will be Pitt's top breakout player in 2016 on offense

Ford is a solid player. The rest range from unproven with some upside to below average to shouldn't have a D1 scholarship.

Ford isn't doubling his production. A lot of his single coverage downfield was because they had 2 and sometimes 3 guys focused on Boyd.. This year, they will have that focus on Ford now. No one is doubling Weah, Henderson, or Challingsworth.

I like ford but if we get 3 or 4 catches per game from him for 50 yards per game, I'd be ecstatic. He does seem like someone I'd target more in the red zone. His TDs should go up.

-How so? Ive been reading on this message board constantly how every team is putting 9 in the box to stop James Conner and our power run game. So are you jamming the box, or protecting the deep threat? We sure didnt throw the ball downfield last year.

Jesus Christ you are delusional. At literally every turn and on every subject.

we threw it downfield, you just linked a video highlight of deep balls. That was it for us, Boyd and Ford with some Holtz running crossing patterns. that was our only options..

9 in the box is silly, so the safeties are both gonna play as linebackers with the CBs lined up as man on man or responsible for their 1/2 of the field?

-Tyler Boyd, 10.2 yard per catch, which is terrible on every level.
he HAD to, there was no one else. On 3rd and 5, it was him or occasionally Holtz. He was our best bet to convert a first.. Once again, this wasn't because he under performed, it was because he was our first, second, third and fourth best option. Blame the fact that we had boyd and no one else on this team.. 2/3rds of our WRs couldn't catch the zika virus if they were barebacking the natives in Rio non-stop..

-Watch the 2014 Conner film or 2015 Ollison film, and watch the box stacked with 8 and 9 players trying to stop these 2 RB's.

-Throwing the deep ball 2 times per game doesnt mean throwing the ball downfield and stretching the defense. Boyd YPC tells you everything you need to know about how our offense was run. Which was poorly.

not gonna stick up for our ex OC. I agree with your last line..

-We wouldnt know, we didnt throw the ball to anyone else. Its going to be fun without Boyd this year, and I get to see what someone else can do. Im looking forward to it.

-Ill also predict Pitt has MORE pass yards this year and MORE pass TD's this year, without Boyd.

-Mark that down.

lol ...

I need to see Peterman be able to read the defense, look off receivers, go through progressions. He never had to do that with Boyd. Peterman ball placement will have to improve because Ford can't adjust like Boyd. And I need to see Peterman be able to be accurate on mid to deep passes.

There is no way in my opinion that Ford comes close to a 1000 yards receiving. I will be very happy with 750 yards and 5 touchdowns.

I am much more excited about Quadree Henderson anyway.

Absolutely no way. The pass attempts will be much less. You said yourself they will at most pass 35% of the time. That's at most 25 attempts a game.

Thanks for sharing the video.

Ford is OK, a bit stiff, but tough and generally reliable.

Nate is going to have to do a lot better job spreading the ball around and driving it downfield for Ford to be able to double his numbers, but as someone else noted, I suspect he can maybe do 50 catches for 750 yards or so, maybe get 5 TDs.

Side note, I am happy for the kid being able to come home and play WR after it didn't work out for the Cuse.

the only 8 and 9 man fronts from last year where when we had no WRs lined up. Va tech had a lot of 9 man fronts but we had parrish in there, Holtz, two running backs.. Of course they are gonna be 8 or 9 in the box, there is nowhere else for them to go..

If we have two WRs lined up wide, or normal, you cant have 9 man fronts.. maybe the safety cheats up but that's it..

-You are assuming they will be less.

-Yes, I am predicting Pitt runs around 65% of the plays.

-Im also assuming Pitt drives the ball better this year than last year, and sustains drives, meaning more plays, meaning more pass attempts.

Agree - actually just posted the same numbers.

And, while I thought Peterman was pretty good the first half of the year, he kind of backslide at the end, and needs to improve in the ways you note.

Either way, it won't be one guy racking up the stats like Boyd, gonna have more kids contribute. And, I am intrigued by Henderson, too.

steel, weah might double his production. just to note i said the same thing last year and it didn't happen.

with ford, his attempts will increase but he'll be facing much better corners this year. if a 2nd wr doesn't step up, this will hurt ford as well.

steel, who hired our previous OC? at that time, our coach thought it was a good fit. if our passing game doesn't come through this year, who is going to be your scapegoat that mention something like 1,000 times?

One thing about Ford that really stick out on this video is how well he gets vertical after the catch. Ford even lowers the shoulder to finish off catches more than I remember from last year (hard to remember after the aww of Boyd). Hope he has a big year.

Gold, Jerry. Gold.

Yeah, he runs a little faster than you might think, and is tough to bring down.

One thing is for sure... It will be interesting to discuss the Statistical difference between last year and this year.... I feel that replacing Boyd's dynamic pass catching ability will not happen... BUT, replacing overall statistical numbers will happen, as a group. Its possible to increase the YPC over last year, which in turn could increase the Overall Passing Yards. I will side with steel_curtain, in saying that the overall Pass production takes a step forward this year... That is not to say that replacing the dynamics of Boyd will occur.... One thing that comes with a Canada offense, is scoring... and I am just hoping that we outscore the opponents.... Gonna make for an interesting season...

H2P

JC back in the backfield will increase the passing numbers. Didn't have that luxury last year.

-Quadree Henderson-Freshmen #2 Breakout Player for Pitt, last 4 games of the season

-vs Navy- 4 Kick returns, 162 yards, 41 yard per touch average, 1 TD
-vs Miami- 4 kick returns, 145 yards, 36 yards per touch average, 1 TD called back
-vs Louisville- 3 Kick Returns, 53 yards, 18 yards per touch average
-vs Duke- 3 Returns, 57 yards, 19 yards per touch average

-Put this guy at every kick and punt return in 2016. Put this guy in the slot and get him the ball. 4.3 speed, get him the dam ball.

-There is a reason I like our WR core. It starts with these 2 players.

He's special on kick returns no doubt. I am looking forward to seeing this offense. We are hearing about 3 rb sets, JC lined up at wr, rumors of 3 wr sets. Maybe this is finally the year we have a true "slot wr". 9.10.16 can't get here soon enough.

wow, could you imagine if we ran 3 wr's at the same time? That would be some true innovation in the college game.

JC is going to run the football.

Narduzzi wants to run the ball. Canada wants to run the ball. Its not hard to connect the dots.

-This is the type of player you stick on the field anywhere, RB, Slot, WR, and try to get him the ball in space because he is explosive and if the defense screws up he takes it all the way. Another player we should have used more in the offense last year. Well, its rumored he is taking a WR position this year, plus probably the special teams. If he can catch the deep ball and beat his man down field, all the better.

Last Year - Boyd, Ford, and Chally combined for 131 catches, 1602 yds, and 9 TD's. Boyd had 91 catches, 926 yds, and 6 TD's.

This Year will need to be more of a team effort, but this group could very well put up similar or slightly better numbers.

For Example
Ford - 60 catches, 800 yds, 5 TD's
Henderson - 40 catches, 500 yds, 4 TD's
Chally - 20 catches, 300 yds, 2 TD's
Weah or Another Young Guy - 15 catches, 150 yds, 1 TD

-Last year was the worst year in the last 10 years at least in terms of using our tailbacks in the receiving game with any type of screens, wheel route, or literally anything. We literally had next to zero receiving yards from our rb's. That a lone will change this year. Goes hand in hand with our previous joke of an Offensive Coordinator. 2 or 3 RB's on the field at the same time generally means power run, jet sweep option with speed, or screen city with a possible pa. Its going to be great not seeing 1 player try to get the ball every play of the game. I also really want to see Peterman sitting at times so I can watch a power wildcat with Conner, Ollison, and Henderson. You want to talk about lethal out of the backfield. Oklahoma State got annihilated by it last year.

There are people so ridiculous and such big homers, you sometimes catch yourself wondering: "would a loss or total failure in the face of their predictions be worth it just to make them look like an idiot?"

The answer always ends up being no (especially because they would never admit it anyway) but damn if they don't make you think it every once in a while.

-Agree, homers are annoying, which is why talking to Penn State fans that think they are going to the playoff this year and winning the Big Ten is funny.

-As for smart money, yea, that's totally different. Was spot on with last years win total at 8. Im predicting 8 wins as the complete floor for this years team. Seems Vegas Odds makers, where the once spread was at 6.5, has collectively jumped higher on Pitt's expectations. Early bird gets the worm. The funny thing is, I think Narduzzi is more confident than I am, that's saying something.
