If he has a mentor / coach / somebody who he can trust to recommend a financial advisor that would be a great first step for Boyd.
Avoid the I'm famous and I'm going to throw my money around ( Johnie Football ) syndrome.

Fitz would be a nice advisor if he is willing.
The problem is these guys get agents who are associated with financial guys who aren't always looking out for the players best interests. Its always best to get someone or atleast a second opinion from someone who is independent from the agents associations.

There are some agents who get it right. Cindrich, e.g. After taxes, he should be just fine & able to put some nice $$ away. The problems are frequently from hangers-on, the posse, and families that are not experienced with big money. I hope he avoids the: "too good to be true" pitches.

l listen to IMUS a radio talk show host who has a net worth of about $ 35 million.
He often mentions that the biggest problem with sports stars, celebs, etc. and their money is all the things you mentioned above + lots of people ready to take what they can get.
Even with $ 35 mill he has a policy that he has to approve every disbursement from any of his accounts or movement in his accounts. He claims that's the only way to be sure you keep your money.
Probably overkill but a get lesson for the soon to be wealthy crowd!
