Davis Beville will be a 2-3 year starter. Underrated gem we landed.

This is not how you recruit.
You got to stack chips. Land as many kids capable of being a legit starter as you can, one hits, the others transfer.
This isn’t about Van Dyke per se as he never really seemed to have much interest in coming here. But the idea that, “well we landed one, so it doesn’t matter” is how you end up with a hole at the position.

Not saying that is the case...but I'm not jumping off a bridge over a kid who lacks mobility but has a good arm, when we have a better option. I'm sure there will be other ones with good mobility like Beville out there.

When you get to that point pick this one.
After watching Pittsburgh sports for many years I've jumped dozens of times and survived without injury!

But we don’t know if we have a better option, that’s the point.
Lets say Beville is a big time talent. Great. But big time talents bust a lot. You get good by adding as many big time talents as you can, then statistically one will hit and live up to their talent. Rinse and Repeat.

Saying, “I don’t care, because we have *a* talent on the roster,” is just a bad recruiting mindset.

Have you told Narduzzi about this?!?

Yeah, back in September. He didn't camp here nor did he visit. Pretty silly to think Pitt lost out on a recruitment that never got started.
Or maybe the kid just didn’t like Pitt or Pittsburgh. It’s not always the coaches fault ya know.

Gee, we’ve had a few 4 star QB’s out of high school. How did those guys turn out????

Chad Voytik
Mark Myers
Pay Bostick
Tra’von Chapman
So I guess Pitt should shoot for 3 stars and under for the QB position? Better yet Pitt should try for additional walk on's to man the position.

No truth to the rumor that Kris Letang got an Undisclosed Upper Body Injury jumping from this. Probably none, anyway.

Going to he tough to really judge this hot take until we see who Pitt ends up signing at QB in this class.

Back to back 7 loss seasons in year 3 and 4.

There is reason for concern

At a program like Pitt I’m willing to give him some slack. No one is coming in here and turning it around in 3 or 4 years.

But I’m a realist enough to acknowledge your concern. I like where the D is but to date, But Narduzzi’s most productive recruits on offense are arguably Pickett and (former walk-in) Morrissey.

Maybe he has a system. Maybe the D will carry. But that’s his recruiting and he’ll live or die by it.

When years 1 and 2 are better than years 3 and 4–
And recruiting falls off-

The concern isn’t about time to turn it around- it’s that now with only his own recruits, the talent level has dropped.

If the administration quit thinking playing tough non conference schedules is honorable and the rest of the country recognizes it then maybe there would be more consistent 9-4 seasons. That's all that is remembered.

I cannot wait for the 2020 non-conference schedule. I won't be flying in from Austin for a game, but I'll cheer the Ws.

It's not about being honorable. It's having schedule gaps and filling them as quickly and cheaply as possible.

And, ehen there's been as much turnover in both head coaches and ADs, as we've had, they don't care what they schedule 5, 6, 7 years out. They figure they'll be long gone. Tennessee, WVU, Notre Dame in a same year? Wow, it'll suck to be THOSE guys that year. But WE'LL be at Arkansas, Oregon State, Michigan State, Wisky, Ohio State etc.

Stupid response. You missed the point completely... No surprise... Here’s the point... Nobody knows how good these kids will be until they actually play. The Van Dyke kid may or may not be a big loss. We won’t know that for a few years...

This isn't basketball. You can't turn a program around with 1 or 2 recruiting cycles. Also, having a great defense in football isn't nearly as crucial as it is in basketball. If our defense is great but we can't score points consistently, we'll lose most games. In basketball, you better have a good to great defense because, even if you score a lot of points, great defense wins championships. I'm willing to give Narduzzi maybe another year or 2 to see if he can get any talent in here, especially on offense. We have very few, if any, offensive weapons now. Ollison and Hall are gone and we don't have a capable QB. WR's and TE's?? I wish some would step up because I haven't heard of any yet that can be called weapons.

I'm usually an optimist, but with Narduzzi, I get the feeling that 6-6, 5-7, 7-5 seasons are about as good as it gets. Will Lyke tolerate this much longer?

I think he is going to get lost in the sauce down there. The backup quarterback for Ohio State transfer down there and I think they picked up another one. Sometime these kids go to a big school like that and I can't blame him because the weather is nice but I would be real surprised if we ever hear from him again.

What's the latest a recruit should need to be the starting QB for it to be worth it to go to a school?

Martell is a Sophomore this season. So he'd be a Junior during TVD's true FR season. A Senior during his rFR season. And then Martell is gone.

Taking over the starting job at a school during your rSO season seems to be a pretty good trajectory.
