Would you guys agree there are three types of coaches available for us to hire? The assistant coach in waiting no real head coaching experience but a very impressive pedigree as an assistant, like tommy Lloyd. The next would be a head coach at a lower level school whose track record would speak for itself, mark schmidt,John Beckett, etc. The third would be for lack of a better term the shoot for the moon guy whether he be out of work presently or coaching. What makes the decesion hard is Capel actually fit into these catagories very nicely.
The next hire will have to be a success with all that is at stake. Do you think Capel is given more time because of this or has the decision been made? Apathy will get you fired as quickly as a bad record and he has both working against him.

Who ever is hired has a tough job but look at it this way he is following two coaches who are not exactly very popular.

I think there’s a fourth: up and coming mid/low major head coach. A little different than the Schmidt/Becker category.

Young up and comer or younger assistant - HUGE risk because they've only been coaching 4-5 years. Did they get lucky with a couple recruits like Jim Ferry did at LIU?

Older mid-major (like Schmidt though Bona is a high major or Beckett at UVm) - less risk but potentially less buzz and less upside. These guys have a longer track record so you can see how they manage a program long-term but there's also a reason they're in their 50s and still where they are at

Unemployed bigger fish - Miller, Pitino, Turgeon, Matta - all create a buzz, all come relatively cheap, but all have non-basketball related baggage

Big fish - Pitt will have to overpay to the tune of $7-$8 million per for a guaranteed winner. Is winning in men's basketball this important to Pitt?

Young coach with a good many seasons already under his belt. ACC ready staff. Would be a hard get, but do able.

I am curious as to your opinions on Kevin Willard. He is a Pitt grad but could have a grudge.I have heard Maryland is making a big play for him.

Its going to take at least $5 million, maybe $6 million to get him to leave a better job in a better league (Big 12 soon).
He is currently in the league he is in. he is currently making 1.25 million.

He has worked in the ACC footprint and has an ACC ready staff.

I say get him.

If you can’t, Knight is my fall back option.

Great if you can get him. I'm saying its going to take $5 million to $6 million.

I don’t know. I understand his agent knows Barnes agent.

Maybe Barnes can put in a good word for him with Heather and we get a good old boys network discount.

You would think we would learn our lesson. I think what Pitt doesn't need, is that big recruiter type who is used to getting all the resources he needs to "get kids" and relies on talent. Especially in this day and age of one and dones, transient portal surfers always looking to upgrade their standing.

I want a systems guy. I don't care if he is in his mid 50's. I think back to when WVU was an absolute clusterbleep, it was so bad Dan Dakich pulled a sorta Mike Haywood only he left on his own after a week after he got a look behind the curtain and Bob Huggins turned them down. They hire John Beilein, Beilein recruited players that fit his system in the 3rd year they went to the Elite 8.

I am dubious of these recruiters who actually are slimy, and have no systems, no X's and O's. I want kids who are willing to put in the work and wait their turn, not always look for the easiest (in their and their handler's minds) route to the NBA.

Its 2022. I like what BballinsiderfromPitt said. First and foremost, you need a guy who can manage both ends of the portal. Need to baby guys so they dont leave and need to be able to bring in top free agents. What good is a system if your players are always transferring? This is a different era in college basketball. Landing and preventing transfers is probably the most importantly qualit

The thing with Capel is a guy who recruited with unlimited resources and highest prestige.

A young head coach with good recruiting school showing vast improvement in his mid major hungry to prove himself. Total different type of coach. But i would not just dismiss a recruiter. But probably would dismiss a blue blood school recruiter who hasnt proven to be able to coach with less talent or spent time building a consistent winner.

Create a Cult like atmosphere

Basketball is an international game nowadays. We should hire a good young coach like Todd Golden with a lot of international connections.
