UCLA cans Steve Alford

Alford was a bad fit. Never understood that hire. UCLA is not what it once was, and those folks need to get over it. But also, it is obviously a program that should be a lot better than it is. The Pac 12 also isn't helping them, the Pac 12 is in real straights right now.

They screwed up by kicking Ben out. He didn't play a glamourous brand of basketball for their alums, all he did was get to Final 4's.

I love it, Dickie Vitale is already pimping his buddy Pitino for the job. Don't these guys have any morals?

Jeff Borzello obliges. Hoiberg, Dixon, Earl Watson the early names. Donovan and Musselman also mentioned.

Howland’s getting quite a bit of revisionist history. Made 3 NCAA Tournaments in his last 5 years there and didn’t make it out of the first weekend once. Those results were a “death spiral” at Pitt, can’t imagine what they call that an actual elite program.

ESPN+ article predicts Dixon, of course. Notes that his name has been gaining steam there in recent weeks.

It recommends Hoiberg but notes that his method of roster building so far, like Musselman, isn’t really what UCLA wants.

Donovan and Tony Bennett are the home-run hires for them but both seem unlikely.

Like Wanny, he was also hit with an unflattering SI piece about his program.

And then imagine what they called it at a program that likes to think it's elite but doesn't realize that it isn't the 60s or 70s anymore and they aren't the industry leader in cheating anymore.

UCLA is elite to older people like, well, me and people older than me. UCLA isn't elite to kids who are 17 years old today. They aren't even in the "elite conversation" with kids of that age.

Sounds like Pitt football.

For not being in the elite conversation with high school kids, it certainly seems to manage to still sell itself on the recruiting trail.

Does it? If their recruiting was actually elite would they be 7-6 and coming off a 15 point home loss to Liberty? They certainly haven't been getting elite results on the court, which is what actually counts, and is the reason that they just fired their coach before the end of December.

Sure, I’d agree that being top 10 on the court means more than top 10 classes. Especially when a lot of their guys are leaving early. But it’s still nice to be able to get talent whenever you want regardless of who the coach is. When the most heavily pursued kids are still picking your school with regularity and despite coaching turnover, I think you still have some status with them.

UCLA is always going to get good recruits because of their name and just the fact there’s so much talent in the surrounding area. They also have zero qualms about stretching the rules.

Ben Howland was my favorite coach at Pitt, but he was dirty as hell at UCLA. Alford obviously didn’t do as good a job in that area.

When you're the big dog in a talent rich area like LA, you should be landing elite classes.

Yep. Excellent recruiting alone won't be enough. Glad we have Capel who has already proven he can coach and motivate.

It is a relief after Stallings performance was such a failure. (Deleted rest of original paragraph--too much dead horse beating.)

Now, assuming Capel's promising recruiting start in 2018 can be continued for 2019 and beyond we should be in great shape for the future.

There is still talent out there. Howland's 2006 - 2008 teams had the following guys, from California alone:
Russell Westbrook, Jordan Farmar, Ryan Hollins, Darren Collison, Josh Shipp, Arron Afflalo. Kevin Love had ties to the state too.

There is no reason they should be ranked #27 in recruiting. They had #5 and #7 the last couple of years. You can win big at UCLA, I don't buy the idea that they're now going to be as perennially irrelevant as the PAC 12 is as a conference.

The problem is that their fans expect for them to be Duke. It's very similar to the situation at Indiana. The programs are still good, but they're not the 800lb gorillas they were at their peak. Unless they're cutting down the nets every 4-5 years, their fans will always be unhappy.

We still have fans demanding we get back to 1980s football levels!

Sure, the fans/expectations have been a challenge since Wooden retired.

But I do think if they had Bill Self that they would win just as much as Kansas or any other top program. The talent is in southern California. They have a $35 million practice gym, only a year old, that is one of the best in the country. They got a huge deal with Under Armour. The weather and culture is tops.

But in basketball especially you need the right coach who can close the deal. Is it Earl Watson? IDK.
