UMBC 80 St Francis 65

The numbers would point to that. But my point was that St. Francis didn't beat us by lighting it up from beyond the arc.

I looked at the boxscore after I had assumed Incorrectly. The game difference was primarily on FTs. UMBC made 13 more FTs than St. Francis. Every other shooting stat was practically dead even. UMBC did make one more FG than St.Francis.

To be honest I posted this on my way out the door for some beers and video poker because I assumed someone else would. UMBC looks to have a pretty decent team this year, and I expect St Francis will probably contend for a conference title as well.

It wasn’t so much a horrible loss for Pitt losing to them as much as it was that they weren’t really competitive.

Zeise said tonight on the Nightly Sports Call he is worried because Pitt gave up 74 points to Drexel, said we are playing awful defense and is foreshadowing that it is going to be a long season in the ACC if it doesn't change.

The defense is pretty suspect for sure and quite frankly I don’t believe the staff really know how to coach defense or at least Capel’s pregame talk with 93.7 the Fan was surprising to me. He was asked about the defensive effort against SF and he alluded to the fact that they really got after defense in practice since Wednesday. He then went on to say that it wasn’t like they weren’t emphasizing it. However, that definitely sounded like a quote from a guy who really wasn’t emphasizing defense or someone who truly does not know how to emphasize defense.

It is so early in this bizarre Covid protocols affected early season with a coach who is trying to find enough PT for several new young players so they can develop faster that I wouldn't worry much about the level of defense being played over two games. If we get several more games into the season and things haven't improved in every way, including on defense, then it will be time to worry.

To my eyes, the unhappy results of the past two seasons were the result of many things--the least of which was the level of defense played. IMHO, the defense will get better as the season progresses to where it won't be nearly as weak as it was the first two games. If we still look the way we did the past two games on defense by late December my view on it will change.

Apparently St Francis isn’t all that good.

Yea. I could tell Nicholls State was a good team so I wrote that one off as a good mid-major playing well and beating us. SF COULD win the NEC but at best, they are a Dayton First Four team. They aren't good.

Capel can't coach defense. He may give it lip service, but he can't coach it. Just like he can't coach how to play offense against the 2-3 zone. If Pitt can't do either of those 2 things this year against much better competition than StF and Drexel, they will lose many more games than they win.

Especially the defense part. At this point, giving up the points that Pitt gave up against StF and Drexel is alarming. Neither of those teams should have scored more than 55 points against Pitt or any ACC-level team. And that's being generous.

I mean, do u think the man to man offense has been good? It puts guys in a position to make plays, but we don’t have enough talented guys to do that like Duke would have.

If between the 4 head coaches on the bench they can’t do the 2 things you mentioned, he won’t outlast Narduzzi.

I truly hope Pitt exceeds mine/Pitt fans expectations, but the first two games have not. Also, University of San Francisco, who beat UVA on Friday, lost to UMASS-Lowell before that. UMASS-Lowell and St. Francis (PA) are probably close in rankings. It can happen to anyone.

I get that it can happen to anyone, it’s just happening to us way too often recently.

Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me. This is his 3rd year, not his first. There are some obvious red flags that need to be fixed.

Brilliant on his part

Just to refresh your memory. We got punked by St. Francis under Capel when we had a roster that contained talent. The guy flat out stinks as a coach.
