Uniontown HS cancels fall contact sports

I don't know if this is a factor, but Uniontown's football team has been absolutely horrible, probably the worst in the WPIAL. They have been blown out every game for at least the last couple of years.

I’ve talked with quite a few HS AD’s in PA, MD, VA, NC and most of their concerns about flipping fall and spring sports would be if there is another shutdown then the spring sports would have lost 2 seasons, last spring and this fall.

can’t really move track to the fall because of cross country. There is a lot of overlap with athletes there.
It’s a nightmare every way you slice it, when you consider recruiting, club and AAU circuits, college coach recruiting periods, multi sport athletes with conflicts...it goes on and on.

I agree. It’s going to really put kids in a jam who possibly won’t be able to put together a season for recruiting purposes.
I depend on football season for my business. This season has been tough with a lot of conferences/coaches clinics being cancelled.

This wasn't just a rash decision for him.

No, I would say not but when football is no longer important at a school, sports don't really matter to the board and community as much as football schools. I would guess a lot of Supt.s would prefer to shut down but can't get 5 votes to do it?

I know Chuck Machesky. He's doing the Superintendent job for free at Uniontown. He's a hardcore football guy and coached a lot of years. This wasn't just a rash decision for him.

Chucks not going to lose any sleep over football not being played in Uniontown.Rumor had it he wanted to shut it down last year.

I don’t know enough about how school boards function to say for sure. I just know the guy. He’s doing this job for free and he might be one of the most intense football guys I’ve ever met.

77 I don't know Chuck personally. What I know comes from people who live and coach in Uniontown.Last year when they voted on leaving the Wpial for football he was pushing for abolishing or co-oping with another district. No school was buying the coop with them for obvious reasons, reclassification .I think they were dressing lass than 20 at the end of last year.

I'll get some inside info tonight when my grandson plays his LL game in Uniontown. My son is the coach and Uniontown's head BB coach is my son's assistant coach.

Of course I don't know him, nor am I familiar with the board, but he sounds like someone who would be a leader, however, a Superintendent has no vote so he may say, "My recommendation is to...." and the board may not take his recommendation. I was basically saying, there are some schools whose Supt. may say, "I recommend we close down these contact sports", but with the community feeling is so strong to play, board members feel the need to vote with the wishes of their constituents. When the football program is weak, you have no push back to speak of.

77 you are correct and I was wrong about Machesky wanting to ax football at Uniontown.Others were pushing to discontinue football when the school board voted last year on leaving the Wpial. It took Covid 19 to do what some wanted to do last year to Uniontown's football team. What I found out tonight is a couple football players said they're transfering to Geibel HS.Geibel co-ops with Southmoreland in football.

I could tell you some stories about Chuck but it’s better to let some die. I just know I pushed his ass all over the dusty practice field as he stood on that 7-man sled and made one smart add comment after another. I loved and hated him all at once.

I graduated from Uniontown High in 1975. Growing up, Uniontown was a WPIAL football and basketball power.

It is a shame to watch from far away what has happened to that once proud program.

44 you had a very good BB team in 75!That Dr Perno could play a little bit.You had great teams in the 60's and 70s in both football and BB.

Yeah, I know Dana Perno pretty well.

We both graduated from UHS in '75 and we worked road construction together in 1976.

We were both flagmen on a paving crew, working summers while going to college.

Uniontown won PIAA football championships in 1962 and 1965. As you said, it won the championship in 1975 (at least that is my recollection, lol).

newsflash - they will recover in a few days
Another newsflash your an asshole! Oh that's nothing new for you. Just how in the hell do you know? Point is that positive results will continue and be very inconvenient for the teams and players. All due to parents who can't settle themselves that take the advice of an idiot. I just hope that no kid loses his life from this. A superintendent told me today he hopes no district has to face any deaths to students, athletes or teachers.

Just like they hope they don't have any deaths due to drunk driving, overdoses, etc. There is a risk, but life has to go on and the risk of death is low. You and others are free to not participate.

So if I follow, it’s okay to do drugs as long as you don’t do too many because it won’t kill you, right? You might lose all your teeth and spend most of your life in and out of prison and never have much of a life but you didn’t die so, it’s cool.

I learn so much here.

No not at all. Your need to try and prove somebody with a different view point wrong is clouding your judgement if that is where you took my comments to.

My point is the risk at this age group dying from covid is low. I am sure administers have a sense of worry but the overall risk is low. There are other things that lead to death at that age group that I believe should be higher concern then covid. If you disagree fine.

The second part of my statement deals with freedom and responsibility. If one feels the risk is too high, they can chose to not to participate.

I am actually a very good case point. My district had 2 choices, hybrid (2 days in school 3 days online) or online only. My son wanted hybrid, I know hybrid is the best for him academically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. My wife and I ultimately chose online only. Why? Because we both have elderly parents so it is send him to school and never see them or don't send him to school and see our parents regularly. This here is what I'm about. People having freedom and then choosing what works best for their life.
