Update on Champagnie

If you look at a post from a couple of months ago; that's been the plan all along.

Smart play. He will be back for one more year once he finds out what the pro evaluators think he needs to work on.

Of the top of my head, handle, three point shot, passing ability. He will need to play on the wing in the pros.

If he gets a mid to late second round pick grade does he leave or come back?

Tricky. Second rounders don’t automatically get guaranteed contracts. Don’t know what the percentages are but some do. But they’re not mandatory. Only 1st rounders are sure to get guaranteed money.

If he gets guaranteed money he gets paid to work on his game. If he thinks he can elevate to a first rounder maybe staying is better. But guaranteed money would be hard to turn away from.

This cant be since some said he'd transfer to a more competitive program. 😂

I agree he's not ready for the NBA.

Speaking of the transfer portal...

There was almost 750 players in the portal prior to the start of today, almost double what it was at this point last year.

This is going to balloon well over 1000+ transfers and somewhere around 25% of all players are going to transfer this year. That doesn't even include the flurry of decommits happening all over the place every day.

This is going to be an offseason like no other. You could literally start with nothing and build a contender with 1 offseason.

So you are saying we have a chance

You can’t refresh the Verbal Commits Twitter feed fast enough. Names are hitting the portal left and right.

Can Capel? You said it can be done , so in many ways this is a make or break year

The kid has talent and can make more than almost every recent college grad by playing basketball. If he doesn't make the NBA and doesn't want to do the G league, then Europe can make him a wealthy guy

I think he's back. But if his tweener size is brought up as problematic, maybe he just says F it and takes his chances here or in Europe. I don't know what top players in Europe make but it's definitely more than a college student.

If I were him and was almost guaranteed to get drafted, I'd leave.
Late second round is a risky move unless he's prepared to end up playing in Europe. The problem is what kind of program would he be playing for next year if he stays? Even if he were inclined to stay and try to improve his draft lot, staying just might not be a very attractive option. If Pitt was a rising program and he might have a shot at leading the program to the NCAA tournament, it might be a lot more tempting for him to stay. The more I think about it, unless the pro evaluators tell him he won't be drafted, which is possible--he's likely gone.

the problem is that scouts don't care if he leads Pitt to the tournament. That doesn't mean anything to them.

He can improve his 3 pointer. That's about it. He's not going to be a better defender at Pitt - we rely on him too much offensively to get 35+ min of hard nosed defense out of him. He'll still dominate the boards and score well around the rim. If he can develop a lethal, not just good, but lethal 3 (40% or higher) he will improve his draft stock. Is it worth rolling the dice on becoming a knock down shooter while staying healthy? not sure.

He should come back and work on 3 pointers and defense. Difference between him being borderline undraftable and a first rounder. Unless he believes like you all that he is hopelessly inept defensively.

I tend to think so too. He really blew up in the first half of ACC play this year and after everything that has been rumored to have happened, I think he's sort of had his heart set on moving on. Just my read and I could be totally wrong.

Nothing wrong with his shot. He can shoot mid-range as well as the 3. He's more of a catch and shoot guy, he's going to have to work more on his handles. I think the issue with Champ is more his strength, agility, lateral quickness, being able to defend, etc. Those things have to be better than what they have been so far, if he's going to stick around at all in the NBA. I think he's going to be more of a role player anyway in the league.

His shot is fine though and that is something he can continue to improve if he leaves. Check out Keon Johnson from Tennessee. He's a wing and NBA scouts are salivating over him despite the fact that he shoots about 25% from 3 point range.

Absolutely no reason not to do this. How does he return to Pitt now though? Is the season’s start delayed? The combine will be held virtually in late September as the draft isn’t until November now. Seems very late to officially rejoin Pitt if that is the decision made.

That was last year. It seems unlikely that it’ll be anything close to that late again this year.

Unless your pitt then it will take us 5 years :)

And even at that, the deadline last year was on or around August 1st.

NY post reported that Julian likely returns if he isn't in 1st round territory. Both said they are both going or staying together.

I also agree with the mentality as I said all along, Justin' goal should be to shoot for a borderline 1st round pick. He has a bet on yourself mentality, he'll return if he doesnt hear what he is looking for.

Could anyone imagine how the NCAA have created such a monster.
