Before anyone defends Narduzzi, I love having him as Pitt coach.

Dinner last night with my wife's first cousin whose son is a junior playing for Virginia. According to her, the difference between new coach and Mike London is night and day. Her son has lost 20 pounds and is now 10% body fat and much faster. Apparently this is common.

The players have constant communication about what they are working on and how they are progressing.

The players hate but love the new coach. She and her son wish that he had been there since his UVA career started. May be more competitive in the near future.

UVA families seem as happy as Pitt fans these days. I guess we'll see once they play.

To be fair, when Shell changed coaches they had him lose a bunch of weight to gain more speed, and he still stinks.

I don't know why anyone would get upset over hearing that Bronco Mendenhall was doing a good job at UVa? There's no need for anyone to have to defend Narduzzi because Mendenhall is reshaping his roster.

I think London is like a lot of guys who fail at this level. He was a GREAT recruiter of talent but a poor developer of it. Mike Locksley and Ron Zook would also fall into that category, as would any number of other guys. I often wonder if James from State College might be another example of that?

Mendenhall wasn't amazing at BYU but he was certainly successful. I imagine he will lift the Hoos to a similar level. I'm just not sure how a coaching staff which spent their entire careers cultivating relationships in the West is going to recruit well in DelMarVa where they have almost no relationships? That will be interesting to watch play itself out.

Just about every fan base gets excited when a new coach is hired to replace a failed one.

We also almost always hear reports that the players are in much better shape with a new conditioning coach.
Your comment about the hiring of a new conditioning coach is spot-on. When a Conditioning Coach is first hired, he's always a "great hire". But unfailingly, his replacement is always said to be an improvement over the old Conditioning Coach.

I am reminiscent of when Buddy Morris came in when Walt was hired. The talk was of turning the players in supermen. All we needed was Buddy to have great players. While he did a good job, there is always that new coach is " gonna whip them into shape" mentality.

Should be interesting to see how they recruit - BYU had its challenges with its tie in to Mormon church and UVA has it with their academics.

I can't check now but I will later to see if he added anyone to his staff with east coast ties.

I forgot to add one other thing she said - the attention to each and every detail. Sounded almost Saban like.

I talk to a professor 2 to 3 times a week that follows and talks to UVA Athletic Boosters and your posts is what he was telling me these last 4 months. I fully expect UVA will a tougher game for Pitt this year then the last 3 and all have been close games? Bronko will have them executing on Game Day and not making the mistakes that cost them some 2 to 3 wins under London, in my opinion. They have a good group of Players coming back too. Another Toss Up Game unless Pitt is at the top of their game in 2016..

The guys you named and others like Foge Fazio, Paul Hackett, Tom Bradley, and Bill Stewart all Great Coordinators but becoming Head Coach is being a Coaching CEO not just a good Xs-Os and Teacher. A Great coach sees that all Units and the coaches running them are showing the Execution worked on all week is seen in games, and mistakes corrected. Plus, recruiting finds, brings talent in and then feeds off itself every year by developing the talent. This has to be done every year not just 1 to 3 years and not just what what is inherited. It is how one handles your own system, attitudes, and players buying into them. Confidence shows up right away too, and Narduzzi has it, and does not need to explain it, just does it.

Franklin is still explaining how his plan for the future is coming along based on his past at Vanderbilt, and may or may not prove it against Meyer, Harbaugh, Dantonio and Narduzzi that has the confidence to know what they are doing and how to make sure all works together to make it better every day, not just year to year. It is often undefinable but one can see the improvement in how the Players respond to the Coaches and Great Coaches attract good coaches that want to learn from them. Framklin Staff is in a state of flux with 3 Coaches that are not there now after being with him for 5 years?

You hit that spot on and exactly what the UVA Boosters think. London did take enough star recruits away to hurt VT's Beamer Ball but with VT's Fuente now back into recruiting the game, many question why A.D. Littlepage hired Bronko and what they call his Mormon Mafia and only kept one UVA Assistant? They expect Mendelhall to improve conditioning, game plans and execution but feel VT's Fuente will out recruit the UVA talent.

Great analysis, based on what is being told to me. UVA is a unique Program and University, they care about academics and winning with talent combined, but they won't always grab just any great player if he can't compete in the classroom either.
We shall see!

always here the same thing when a new coach comes in. Attention to detail, more structure, night and day difference from last coach. You can pretty much guarantee these quotes from players when a new coach comes in. We heard it with graham, duzzi, and chryst. "Night and day" from the old staff. That's what new staffs do, after a few years, when policies and processes are in place, they relax a bit and focus on other details. Then they leave, new staff comes in and focuses on details and structure again.. And we hear the quotes about it being "night and Day" difference from previous staff..

Very rare that a players and fans aren't excited about a new coach and the bright future that lay ahead. Pitt basketball fans excluded of course... All coaches win the press conference, games are a different story..

Very good Info and thank you, confirms that UVA went into another direction and will be a tougher game this year too, but Coach Pat & Staff is working harder than ever and if Pitt Offense cans core as Pitt Defense learns better together it will be a good game.

Very true and will not argue that, but I see it differently with Narduzzi! He wanted the job at Pitt, knows the past and the area, and will have a tougher schedule this year than last year. We shall see if he can change the few plays that cost Pitt wins in Iowa, UNC, and Miami, Games. At the same time, the close wins Pitt did win were just as tough?

We shall see, but the difference I see from since 1983 to 2014 was Pitt Execution and Game Plans Coaching on Game Days all 4 Quarters reminded me more of Majors & Sherrill, under Narduzzi than anything I saw under Harris, Wannstedt, Graham and Chryst!

Bronco teams have always been very physical and chippy. Speaking with my UVA contacts he really is trying to change the culture of the football program. I expect UVA will make a bowl game this year and be a thorn to ACC teams in the future.

well I sure hope he wasn't hired to continue the culture at Virginia.. I think in terms of the coastal, there really isn't that weak link that is an easy win. Cuse and UVA are at the bottom and both could easily beat any team in the coastal. No one is that far better or worse than anyone else..

It is the head coach and his hiring and running the program. Narduzzi surrounds himself with an aggressive staff that recruits and has energy and commitment to getting the job done. A program needs both to win. Certainly the new hires in the ACC coastal will bring challenges to Pitt and the other programs.

One thing that will help is that their ooc is much softer.
They play Oregon, but the other games are Uconn, central Michigan, and Richmond.
Contrast that to ucla, Boise, and Notre dame last year.

Right on, A.D. Littlepage did not do London any favors on scheduling they played a very tough schedule playing such Teams as ND, USC, UCLA, PSU, Boise, BYU, Oregon on OOC. London often won 5 games but those kind of games kept him off the Bowl Making.

London was a great recruiter but just came up short on other areas as a Head Coach and lost some very close games, then get blown out by others. Yet, he did pretty good at Richmond.

DRVY insights might be spot on comparing Franklin and London. London is now with Maryland as AHC/DL so we shall see?
