Va Tech AD 'expects ACCN to begin broadcasting this year'

I personally don't think it will be broadcasting this year. The SECN was announced 15 months before it was launched. ESPN promoted the hell out of it to get fans to hound their carriers to carry it. I would expect ESPN to do the same with an ACCN.

Maybe the fan that posted that on the VT forum either took it out of context, or maybe Babcock believes an announcement for an ACCN would come out in 2016, but I highly doubt it launches in 2016.

Just my opinion.

I'm sure yet again Swofford will be asked at next month ACC meetings in florida.

Supposedly told boosters at a meeting?
Anyone hear this anywhere?
Take this for what it's worth but I will pass on what I heard about a year ago from someone in the Entertainment ( sports). Basically, the model had the SEC and ACC become preferred partners in sports so that it would essentially cut the expenses in half. Both networks get programming today and replays forever. You only need one technical team instead of two. SEC gets much better basketball and other Sports and both Football Schedules don't get watered down. They would essentially use the same platform as SEC for production.

Person swears Texas will be in ACC if this happens.

I don't buy it. He says this at an open meeting and not one single media outlet carries a story about it? If this was 1984 I would buy it but not in today media market. You have media sources breaking stories about coaching hires through connections but no one has a story about this being said at a public meeting.

My guess is the VT AD was asked about the network and he said something like they expected an answer from ESPN this year and that things were looking positive and that was misinterpreted that ACCN is beginning broadcasting this year.

The only way the channel could begin broadcasting so soon is if they have all the carriage deals solidified behind the scenes already and are pretty much setting up the network in secret....which is kinda unnecessary. Either that or the worst-case scenario of the "ACC Network" just being branded as programming on ESPN. "Welcome to tonight's ACC Network game betweek Pitt and Virginia" but its on ESPN2 with no dedicated channel. So, I wouldn't be totally surprised if the "network" was just the branding of ACC games on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and Raycom with maybe a better effort to spread the games out so there aren't 4 noon games an 0 night games. That would be an epic disappointment however.

Someone else said on another board that this is not what Babcock said, but that he spoke about there being a positive move toward a network and he believes one will happen and they are hoping to hear by the end of the year what direction the ACC is going.

Not that one will be on air.

Probably. Some things are starting to get pieced together.

Oct: GT AD says ESPN wants additional time to give us an answer and ACC agrees

March: Wes Durham says ESPN ups ACC $45 million/year if no network by July 1, 2016

April: VT AD comments about hearing something in 2016

Conclusion: Durham was right about the $45 million but ESPN asked for more time to work out carriage deals and further market analysis. ACC agrees and gives ESPN until Dec 31, 2016 (just my guess) to give an answer. If its no, the $45 million kicks in.

I don't know when or if this channel will get off the ground, but it's not like they would have to build from scratch, the SEC network is in Charlotte and I am positive they didn't build a three room shack to broadcast from........I am sure there is a lot of empty space for the ACC to get up and running

There's a ton of space. ESPNU and SECN rent space in a huge office park in suburban Charlotte.

With ESPN losing part of the big ten package that may have gotten ESPN to move more quickly.

If anything, losing half the Big Ten games hurts the chances of an ACCN since ESPN will need the ACC to fill more air time on ESPN and ESPN2......which means fewer games to stick on an ACCN.

“I said that I hoped we would have some kind of clarity, one way or the other, by the end of the calendar year,” Babcock told me Tuesday evening via phone, “and we’d likely get an update at our meetings in May. That was it. I’m quite sure that’s what I said. I’m always very careful about what I say on the (subject).”

Makes sense. The ACC probably allowed ESPN to extend its decison date to Dec 31, 2016 from July 1, 2016. If no network by then, its $45 million/year more.

Teel is good at clearing this crap up. Pretty much what some said above.
