Va Tech Insult Reminder

High 40s with a 70% chance of rain in evening. Game on nat tv. I wouldn't predict a sellout.

...sounds much like the OSU/ PSU weather, which usually helps the underdog...
...a big turnout is possible...even if on national TV...

Sure they would. The other teams coach just took a shot at their fanbase, which is part of their program.
Somehow I think it's pretty low on their priorities.
If anything, they're far more likely to hope it's the fans who get mad, than get mad themselves.

Well we have different opinions then. I know when I played ball in HS, i would get fired up about anybody making comments about our team, school or fanbase. We never had a coach make out of line comments like this, but to me it would mean even more.

As is tradition, the Penguins have a home game opposite a big Thursday night Pitt game. Not only will this cut back on the Pitt crowd, it creates a great "stay at home and flip between 2 games" or "watch both games at the bar with friends" for local casual Pitt fans.

it is what it is. I'm tired of arguing or worrying about attendance until Pitt is consistently and realistically in the conversation to win their conference every year. Because until they're that good, people aren't going to show up on a cold damp Thursday night when the other option is to stay dry and warm and watch a top quality national broadcast.

I've been both a Pitt and Pens fan for so long and know so many of both and have never, not once, heard someone say they decided against a Pitt game due to a conflict with an oct. Pens game. Have you really?

A couple. But mostly I hear at work the next day (from casual Pitt fans), "yea I was flipping between the Pitt and Pens game." Really? You cant miss 1/84 of the Pens preseason for 1/12 of Pitt's regular season?

settled science those five day forecsasts....
LOL, let's just say it's a "fluid" situation. Hoping the rain misses Heinz, I'd like to see this played on a dry field. High 40's/low 50's sounds kind of nice though..

Here's the thing. It is a 5-2 Pitt team. How many times has this region seen a 5-2 Pitt team get ready to spin it into another 6-6 or 7-5 type of season. It feels like this.

Pitt very well could have, let alone should have beaten OK State and UNC. Pitt would be ranked, high. Probably top 10. 7-0. Now you create buzz. You create something that people are willing to get off their asses to go see.

Those are these opportunities that we miss on at a regular basis.

good post recruits.. that's why that UNC game especially was huge.. Loyalists on this board ho-hum that loss and it is crazy.. We win that game, we build that buzz, we hear all week about how big this game is.. We lose, well we hear about wvu and psu, nothing about pitt. It's these games that get the "fair weather" types on board, that get the Cook's of the media talking good things about pitt.

That's the point. It doesn't matter what the diehards think. It is the casual football and sports fan Pitt needs to tap into and excite and they just haven't done much in 35 years to move that needle.

I've got news for most of you. Even a 7-0 Pitt team wouldn't sell out the Thursday night game. This is not a quick fix problem that is solved by winning a few more games. It's a long term problem that needs years, even decades of solid commitment from the University and at least some consistency in the coaching ranks. You simply can't build a sustainable fan base that comes in large numbers with the way Pitt has handled football over the last several decades. The same is true with the teams placed onto the field each season. Way too much inconsistency. That's 30, 40 or more years of boneheaded decisions and incompetent administrators overseeing Pitt football (not all of them, but more than enough to tank any program).

And the solution has little to do with convincing the fair weather fans in Pittsburgh to show up to watch a winning football team. It's about establishing a long term relationship with those connected to the University from the moment they arrive on campus.

HTP, it's not about a sellout. It's about getting the casual fans involved. Think about some great atmospheres at Heinz. That ND game a few years back, the night game, That was an awesome EVENT. not just a pitt game but an actual EVENT. my man Luke Steelerstahl announced "pitt day" freaking PItt lit up on steel building with office lights, that was bad ass.. That's they hype we need, that type of game that gets the casual fans to the game.

regarding building that fan base thru students, that's a small drop in the bucket. You aren't going to fix your attendance woes by appealing to freshman students, our undergrad enrollment isn't big enough.. We need the fair weather types, the fans that like pitt but wait for good things to happen before jumping on board..

Agree. But it would be a start. It would have a buzz. Steelers have a bye this week. It may garner 4-5K walk ups. But it would be something to build on.

Available stadium capacity too large. Even with all said parameters maxed out, there never will be consistently demand near that number.

Not sure why the number of people at a game is such a topic here. I have enjoyed going to PITT games for a long long time and don't even pay attention to how many other people are at the game. Some of you need to get out of the house more.

Cause it is obvious that our rivals, especially recruiting rivals harp on and point this out to kids.

I like where our class ended up last year and will wait and see where this class ends up on LOI day. Coaching changes had more of an impact on recruiting and we seem to have stability at this point so let's see where this class ends up.

Correct. If you think Pitt can come anywhere close to selling 70K tickets for a weeknight game vs anybody other than PSU, WVU, ND, Alabama, or the New England Patriots you are out of your mind. Stadium too big.

Yeah... totally would be offended. Are you saying some dumb coach talking down your team if you were playing wouldnt offend you??
Sure. But he wasn't talking about the team, just its fans.
You know, the ones that usually can't be bothered to get loud unless Sweet Caroline comes on, and then half of them end up leaving.

This game is the exact type we always lose - on the brink of being ranked if we win and may even end up ranked depending on if we should win convincingly. I'm not saying we will lose and sure hope for any win be it by 1 or 21 I could care less just win. I also don't care if we win with 25,000 empty seats just win. If what a coach says about a fan base is what it takes to fire up this team then we have much bigger problems. I think knowing you gotta win Thursday to stay alive for a conference title game is all the players care about not what some coach says in an August in the pre season. I don't think anyone thinks what a first year coach spouts out has any relevance to how these current players will prepare this week. They want to win for the chance to play in a title game not to shut some dumb loud mouth up, thats all the motivation they should need at this level. We have always played VT tough and I see this being a tight game and one I hope we find a way to win.
