Champ-31 points, 14 rebounds, 5 blocks, 2 steals. He was everywhere, played a fantastic game and really stepped up on defense. There has been some chatter about Champ and his chances as an NBA player and my response to this is, trust the process.

Jared Dudley, a 6’6 ½ sf / pf, spent 4 years developing his game at BC. And there are several things that are quite ironic about Jared. First was his nickname: “Junkyard Dog” because of his toughness and nastiness on the court much like Champ. Dudley became the ACC player of the year and a consensus All American as a senior before being drafted in the first round. He was a 3 time All-Conference selection and was All Conference in both the Big East and the ACC. Dudley was a 0 star player with 1 Power 6 offer coming out of high school, that offer being BC. He was very, very lightly recruited.

Dudley shot the 3 ball at 44% his senior year with a FG percentage of 57% for the season. He also averaged 3 assists per game as a senior and greatly improved his defensive game as he gained experience over the years. Dudley put up 12ppg and 7rpg when he was on the All Freshmen Big East team. Jared really struggled with his 3 point shooting his first 2 years in college much like Champ. But he developed it, with his passing and defense, to get to the league as a 1st round selection.

Champ can continue to develop his 3 point game, his passing game, and his defense to get to the same level as Dudley did with respect to rounding out his game besides scoring and rebounding before having a chance of going in the first round. Dudley has been in the NBA 16 years already. Dudley trusted the process with patience and development.

Game Ball Assist

Toney-22 points, 11 boards, 2 steals, 1 assist. The nickname warrior is appropriate here. Game in and game out Toney continues to get it done on offense AND on defense. His development the last 2 ½ years has been a joy to watch and he is going to be even better next year which is a scary thought for the rest of the league.

Game Ball 2nd Assist

X-Winning players make winning plays, and that is what X has been doing recently. 11 assists against Duke speaks to his maturity as a basketball player reading the floor and picking his spots. Like Toney, watching X develop his decision making has turned him into a much better player. X has an ORTG offensive power ranking of 108, which is major improvement from a year ago.

Additional Nuggets

Odukale- His passing and ball control in ACC play continue to shine as a freshmen along with his toughness. In his last 2 ACC games against Duke and Syracuse Femi has 11 assists and 0 turnovers. Let that sink in before I also mention he continues to be a stud on defense.

AKC- I made this comparison 5 games into the season and now Im doing it 10 games into the season.

Defensive DRTG Power Rating

Gary Mcghee as a senior-90.9

Karim Coulibaly as a sophomore-92.8

AKC continues to be an absolute pest on defense and seals his man well. His help defense has also been a plus. He also leads the team in FG% at 55%. He is becoming great at the little things and has accepted his role as a low usage player on offense picking his spots when the opportunity arises while still making some nice passes. He is 8-1 as a starter. Winners win and AKC continues to win in his starting role.

-10 games into the season, the team defense is still ranked in the Top 35 Nationally. And if it wasn’t for the first 2 games of the season, the defense would be ranked far higher than 35th. Our field goal percentage defense ranks 23rd in the country. Our 3 point defense ranks 5th in the country. Big Time improvement here.

-Our team ORTG offensive power rating has been over 110+ the last 2 games against Cuse and Duke. If this trend continues over the next few games then things are really going to start looking promising on both ends of the court in terms of the future.

-The team rebound margin ranks 29th in the country. This is major improvement over the last 5 years. Champ and Toney have a combined 25 putbacks on the season 10 games in which is fantastic. We continue to hunt the glass.

A few of the Short lists of our Top Targets

Efton Reid- (2021) Pitt is in major contention with Ohio State and Michigan among others. Reid is a borderline 5 Star center that has the option of skipping college as a 7 footer. To put it shortly, he would be a massive get.

MJ Rice- (2022) Pitt sits in the Top 3 with NC State and Louisville currently and Jeff Capel has recruited Rice for years. Duke has not offered yet. Rice is a 5 Star small forward with big time potential. He will commit early in the process.

Rodney Gallagher (2023)- Pitt is and has been the leader. He is a 5 star caliber guard in 2023.

Mady Traore- (2022 )6’11 power forward / center with a 7-4 wingspan. Recently announced his Top 8. Has a very strong relationship with Jeff Capel and our staff. 4 Star Top 100 with huge potential to be ranked far, far higher with development in the future.

Jalen Hood Schifino- (2022) As mentioned by his own family, Pitt is in his Top 3. He is a borderline 5 Star guard.

Dereck Lively- (2022) Top 50 7’0 Center. Pitt sits in the Top 7 with a bunch of powerhouse teams

I mentioned after the Syracuse game there is significant light at the end of the tunnel. That light is shining brighter by the day.

-4-1 in the ACC and 8-2 on the year with 3 Top 50 wins and counting, onward and upward we go…

This is the level I want to see both Champ and Toney strive for "next" year. Sam Young going for 31 and 10 against the #1 team in the country against the #3 overall defense in the country. Put the work in like Young and the results will show along with being selected on draft day. This Duke team we just beat is Top 50 worthy, maybe Top 20 worthy with a healthy Jalen Johnson. The team we just beat isnt close to this #1 Uconn team.

Both of these players have a chance to become something really special with 1 more year of hard training and 1 more season at Pitt.

One of my top 5 sporting events ever.

A well presented case you make Lord Vader. I tend to agree with these kinds of perspectives. Really hoping you are right, seems pecarious though if we get many more shooting nights like this out of Penny.

And that Young video was awesome! 😍

Thought the place would collapse.
That's in the time period when my oldest was deciding for undergrad. I was 🤞that him being there would seal the deal. Turns out I wasn't a very good recruiter. Dang that Wolfpack.

The ironic thing is along with your "These are the good ole days", I felt like this was the norm - and it was - till it wasn't. Shoutout to Harve - be careful what you wish for.

What he is doing now is the same thing he did in high school, and that's put a beating on teams in the interior with layups, dunks, putbacks, little floaters, turnarounds, etc. He is an exceptional finisher on the inside.

Justin has made 64 baskets this year and 47 of those are within 5 feet of the basket. An additional 13% of Champ's makes this year are dunks. His entire game is punishing people in the paint. He has to expand on that game with consistency. He isn't going to survive in the NBA when 74% of his total makes are within 5 feet of the basket. Champ has played 8 games this year. He has face 1 Top 50 Nationally rated defense and zero ranked teams to date.

I love Champ's potential. But right now he is feasting in the interior just like X did his freshmen year and I warned people about that when teams started packing it in on the inside. You saw what happened with X as a sophomore when the layups were taken away from him. X wasnt close to an NBA player as a freshmen, his in depth stats and ORTG weren't close to supporting it because he had minimal game outside of drive and score in the paint. People talking "noise" over hyping him at that point was a detriment to him. As mentioned, I have concerns with Champs stamina moving forward. His stamina was so bad last year he was the worst defensive player on the roster the 2nd half of the season because he was taking plays off.

Champ doesnt turn 20 years old until the very end of June. He is very young right now for a sophomore at just 19. Letting his game grow and develop will serve him well in terms of being able to survive and having an actual "career" in the NBA. There is zero reason that he cannot get himself on the path of Jared Dudley with rounding out his game and being selected in the 1st round. Patience and hard work will be rewarded in time just like with Dudley, or, our own Sam Young.

Everyone wants to get paid. But players have to be smart. There is a choice to wanting a potential long standing career in a mans league, the NBA, or ending up in the JV league oversees. Like I said, Champ needs to trust the process and take a word of caution from X. Let the process and development play out.

Follow up on this

Xavier Johnson talking about "praise" and how the team practiced ridiculously poorly because of it coming off the Duke win. This is what Im talking about, overconfidence can kill you.

I like the maturation that X is showing though. Being in his 3rd year after getting our asses beat by St. Francis at home, he knows what hype and overconfidence can do and how the defense will suffer because of it. Here is him talking about it, how the walkons were kicking the starters asses in practice a day ago, and Capel running them into the ground because of it. He has a right to look pissed off, he's one of the 2 leaders of this team and needs to get that message across to the rest of the team that the foundation and anchor of this basketball team is on the DEFENSIVE side of the basketball game. And to zone out the "hype and praise" and get back on track.

I'm totally with you on this Vader. My concern is if he keeps hitting the J's this season Justin is probably gone.

If he is, wish him good luck. Finding replacements is part of Capel's job. Losing guys to the NBA raises our perception.

Dudley is a name I hadn't thought of, but I think that's a great comp for him. Jae Crowder is another one that comes to mind.

Oh, I like that Jared Dudley comp for Champagnie. Almost like it a little better for Toney.

Ill give you a better comp for Toney imo.

Donta Bright, "the warrior" for 1996 Umass. Toney is slimmer and more athletic but they both have that leader alpha dog mentality for shut down defense that sets the tone for the rest of the team. The ultimate glue player that does all the little things and scores when needed that gets up in your grill on the floor. Both can score and are very solid in transition, can pass, can attack the glass. Both play bigger than 6'6 that have a knack for making the "key" play at critical points.

We just need Horton to gain and sustain the confidence and become Carmelo Travieso shooting 3's and land Efton Reid... And have our depth players improve and next year becomes very promising...

Calhoun was soooo easy to hate. I loved hating him and he loved being hated.
A perfect marriage.
