Game Ball- Blake Hinson. Through 3 games Hinson is trying to do his best Sam Young impression. Scoring on all 3 levels, rebounding, hustle plays, he looks like the ultimate secret weapon no one in the country knows much about after not playing live college basketball in over 2 years. Another game, another video game beast mode performance. 27 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 made 3 point baskets. He continues to get the job done in all facets of the game and helps our team put opponents away.

Game Ball Assist- Fede Federicko- Through 3 games Federicko has played better and better each game out. 13 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks on 6-7 shooting. I like his athletic ability and wingspan on the backline and he looks like an acc player right now. Its easy to see why Bob Huggins and West Virginia offered him and got him to commit before he came to Pitt. He looks like a typical Huggins frontcourt player. He is going to get a lot better in the future as he has tools to work with.

Game Ball 2nd Assist- Guillermo Diaz Graham. 4 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block in 13 total minutes of action. He’s very raw and thin but the hustle plays, screen setting potential, assist potential, and overall basketball potential; there are tools to work with here and like Fede he is going to be a lot better as the season moves on. I like our frontcourt and John Hugley isn’t even a part of it yet. Great opening game by him and I thought his defense was good.

More notes

21 assists on 26 made baskets. Ball movement inside to out and in transition was good. Want to see more dribble penetration to the basket and less 3 point shooting attempts.

We shot 26% from 3 today. This needs to improve greatly moving forward. Its only 1 game, but it needs to be better.

Defense held UT Martin to 32% shooting and 15% from 3, with 17 forced turnovers. Simon and Stewart were both held in check and the 2 of them had 10 total turnovers combined.

Nike Sibande is forcing the action just a little more than he needs to on offense, but his hustle on both ends of the floor is well noted. I want to see better shot selection and for him to find better flow in the offense without pressing as the rest of the team appears to have good early chemistry going on sharing the basketball.

Nate Santos is still searching for his 3 point shot at the college level. I hope he finds it as we need it. We cannot have another Drumgoole in the rotation this year.

I thought our guard play was just ok in this game.

Player that needs to step up- Nelly Cummings. It’s the 2nd game in 3 performances that Cummings was just average and we need better from a 5th year senior point guard. I want to see more work being done by him getting the ball into the interior and mid range and far less work jacking up 3’s. Utilize the ball screen and crossovers and get the ball into the paint and attack from the midrange. He needs to be better and can be better. It is noted he is coming off a small injury from last game. As a team we shot 19-28 (68%) inside 10 feet today.

Final thought: This team can beat West Virginia without Hugley even playing. But we need an "A" game from Cummings for it to happen.

I especially agree on your
comments re Cummings.
He needs to concentrate
on actually running the
offense.I saw too much
freelancing, rushing, and
not enough "settling."
Our talent was overwhelmng
and he got away with a lot
due to this. It hurt us at
times tonight, but will
kill us against ACC teams
and against some of our
pre league games.

The assists are what stood out to me. Glad you said it.

I liked the ball movement but hated the excessive three point shooting. When 10 plus minutes was just chucking up 3s. But when they went inside or drove and dished good things happened. But you see a team that just not fully trusting the inside game. Maybe with Hugley back they start to play inside but also use him to kick it back out for better looks.
It’s been awhile seeing a Pitt team with height. Now we need to add some meat to those guys.

Yeah Vader, this was a very good assessment. And I too agree about Cummings. Needs to stay focused on running the offense.

I would like to think he was pressing a bit being his first home game in a Pitt uniform. He's always been a volume scorer.

Agree on EXCESSIVE 3-point shooting. What was it--41 attempts? That is 10-15 more than we should take in a game. Also, the percentage made was too low---Only made 11 of the 41, I believe--think it was 5/22 1st half and 6/19 2nd half.

The only real negative was the plethora of missed shots, but that will come and go. What will travel is defense and rebounding and it was good to see this team’s commitment to both. They really made life hard for Simon and Stewart. You could see how visibly frustrated they were (well, Stewart was obvious).

It also looks like we are deep enough that Capel should have plenty of options when guys are having off nights. I still don’t think much of his gameday coaching, but he does have good options.

Hinson stood out, but the twins look smooth. They are just raw and inexperienced. I hope we get 3-4 years of them because they could become all-time fan favorites here.

I am pleasantly surprised with what I saw, but the next 3 games will tell us everything.

For what its worth--Julius Page on the tv broadcast thought the twins if/when they get bigger and stronger might one day play in the NBA.

Haha yeah I think Julius had quite a few statements of hyperbole during the game. Gotta love his enthusiasm. Guillermo sure looks like a guy who could very well be a starter by season’s end. He seems like he will be hard to keep off the floor.

The twins drew quite a bit of fouls in limited action. Saw that from GD-G in FIBA as well.

I would pump the brakes on KG and Pau but... lol

Aleksej Pokuševski is who I think of with Jorge.

Guillermo could put on 40 pounds and be a Marc Gasol type.

What I saw, and it is tough really to judge.

Hinson is obviously a player. Might be our best overall player since??? But he would have fit in on the Howland/Dixon teams. Great body too.

Fediriko was much better than I thought. Athletic, but he seemed to have a pretty high BB IQ and while not Mo Gueye on the perimeter is not also as much of an offensive liability on the blocks. Better than Terrell Brown already.

Guillermo. Pretty impressive for his first go. You can see he can be a player.

Cummings just needs to calm down a bit, but he still wasn't the hyper drive into traffic/trouble as X was and a better shooter.

Elliot looks like he has a nice stroke.

Still a bit dubious on Santos.

Burton is that quintessential Pitt type of player.

Will be interesting when Hugely comes back along with Jeffress.

Wonder what happens if Dior Johnson becomes eligible.

thanks , hard to keep up with all the player movement.

The problem is that after this year, these guys will be mostly gone and a new bunch will come in. It is hard to keep up with it and get to know who they are since they change every year. Other than Burton and Santos, the guys that played last night were all new for Pitt, correct?

Sibande, though he didn’t play last year.

probably why they looked soo much better last night.
Sibande played previously but missed all last season.

Maybe I watched a different game, but I definitely disagree on Nelly.

I thought he ran the offense well and made some really nice passes. His shots will fall. Something tells me if he hits a couple more open 3s he’s not mentioned as needing to improve here.

In comparison to last year, you are correct the players are new since Sibande didn't play last year and Jeffress / Hugley are injured.

After this year, well that is tbd who comes back. But the potential of our future frontcourt of Hinson, Hugley, Fede, and the twins looks far better than what I would of hoped / ever would have imagined just a month ago. And Fede / twins have great upside potential and could get a lot better. Our frontcourt could be pretty darn good a year from now with everyone back and healthy. Suddenly, not getting Papa Kante or Dembele is far less concerning as opposed to getting additional guard / wing talent for next season. I am bullish on this frontcourt's potential in the future if it sticks together without injury. And all of them could be back.

College sports are a yr to yr thing now , can’t worry about who stays and who goes every yr .

Next yrs committed freshman if signed are a step forward for the program. The direction is in the right direction.

This is what I want Nelly Cummings to be this year in the video below. This is Cummings senior season highlights from last season, watch the first 2 minutes of this video and that is the player I want him to be this year. I want him to attack the low block and use the bigs on the inside, take midrange shots, and shoot the 3 as a 3rd option. I don't want him and the team jacking up 3's as the first option. The pg needs to run the offense and make the team as efficient as possible. Our team efficiency in game 1 was bad despite the blowout win. The point guard needs to be better. If Krauser was on this team I can only imagine how good we could be this year with a healthy Hugley and consistent dribble penetration into the low block. Cummings will be better in the future, he's more than capable. But I expect better than what we got from him last game.

I can't complain about Nelly too much because he's the 1st real point guard that knows how to run an offense that I've seen at this school in many years and that was one game.
Nelly seems like the type that gets bigger the bigger the challenge

I miss the days of watching Pitt Basketball whip up on some team and the Football team whip up on another at night or the next day and having the top Football recruits at the Pete.

Maybe someday soon, again.

I think official visits moving to the summer all but killed the “football visitors at the basketball game” thing. At least the way it used to be.

I hope he watched a lot of Jalen Brunson tape over the summer too.

Cummings had several nice passes to Federiko.

In regard to the Diaz Grahams: Do Todd and Penny have relatives in the Canary Islands? They look like they can play, but they need to do some serious work on their lower body strength. Mo Gueye looked like Steven Adams in comparison.

Worried about 41 three pointers. We won’t rebound most of those in the ACC on the offensive end.

That is what I thought. What about a Covid year making it 4 years.
No, he was still in high school (right down the road at First Love) for the 2020-21 season that resulted in the covid waiver.

I am starting to wonder if at some point we go big down the road in spurts with

SF-Hinson 6'7
PF-Hugley 6'9
C-Federicko 6'11

I would have never thought that preseason. Now, Im starting to think about the potential of it, including owning the glass with that trio.

Probably going to be tough with Hugley's leg this year to get him into a PF role on the defensive end. Next year however...

There are also lots of interesting possibilities for crunch time at the end of close games where you might sub one lineup when on defense and another when on offense. Could run a 3-big zone on defense using the twins with Hugley or Federiko in the middle and two taller guards outside--like a Syracuse zone; then sub a better scoring group when you go on offense.
