Anybody see that Vanderbilt just named Barton Simmons the general manager of the football team?

I know people like to say that recruiting rankings don’t mean anything and these sites just follow the big time programs and blah blah blah.

But teams are starting to poach these recruiting gurus. Although I have no idea what the general manager of a college football team would even do.

Take a look at the transfer portal. Check out the portal info on Twitter for both Rivals and 247.

The number of players entering is exploding. Keeping track of all of that is going to be a constant undertaking. And it could be a big help if someone who was very familiar with the backgrounds and evaluations of some of these transfers could be right on top of it all. There are players entering the Portal now in ALL classes - FR through SR’s. Not just grad transfers.

There will comings and goings for virtually all programs. Teams will have an opportunity to significantly reshape rosters from year to year. Analogous to free agency in pro sports.

You can be a "Logistics and Strategy Manager". That is a position that will suggest plays, personnel changes and clock management via the game thread. The "Operational Communications Manager" will check the game thread in real time on gameday and alert the coach. These positions will pay 7 figures like all of Saban's analysts.

Except Karlo Zovko worked at Duquesne and at Toledo before getting the job at Pitt. He wasn't solely a "recruiting guru," despite also having that in his background.

I believe GM of Vandy is just the Director of Recruiting. He definitely knows how to evaluate recruits, but it may help him from being at 247 previously.

Good idea. For years, I have been saying that all teams, pro and college need a Clock Management Specialist for end of games. Pro and college coaches have proven they are incapable of doing this and arent smart enough to do that quick math in their head. All teams should designate someone to do this for them.
