Vanilla play calling on purpose according to alan sanders

Glad things didn't get very tight in that third quarter, or we really could have made a season killing error

I agree. It was vanilla, and as I said in another thread, it does not excuse the poor Oline play. But 3 of these guys have nfl written on them. I would not worry about them long term. (That doesn't mean other areas aren't a concern. Wr and lb still greatly concern me. As long as Peterman stops turning it over, I am okay with 2 tds and 0 picks game but would like to see the yardage closer to 250 than under 200)

Playing vanilla is stupid. Because we play Ped State next week, an impossible task in 2 weeks. We needed as many reps as possible. You didn't see Ohio State running a vanilla offense yesterday. So so dumb.

The offensive scheme was vanilla and the personnel use was probably also not what it will be over the next few weeks. What I would've liked to have seen was Pitt's size, speed and talent dominate, which it didn't.

if this play calling was vanilla, and I believe it was, this tells you why these fcs games need to go away.. Coaches don't respect fcs opponents, they say they do, it's a game we wont look past blah blah but they don't... If a coach is calling 1/3 of the playbook to "not show" their stuff, that tells you all you need to know about these scrimmages.. You cant tell us it's like every other game then prepare and call the game different from every other game. You cant have it both ways..

It's like nfl coaches demanding these 4 exhibition games and telling you how important they are but they only play their starters the first quarter of the 3rd game and use players that will be cut the other 3 and 3/4's of the exhibition. Is it really that important if you don't play anyone of significance..

OK, that was two completely different rants morphed (poorly btw) into one..

Nah, it was pretty much spot on...both of them and they were well "morphed" in this post.

Narduzzi harped on communication issues on offense on the field, on the sidelines and from the booth. Well, another year and another offense being installed.

A bit concerning that the team struggled to execute the simple plays. But, the talent's there... Just gonna take the team a few games to adjust and get the communication on track.

Disappointing effort from the OL. Conner danced far, far too much as well.

On the bright side, D/ST looked great aside from the K.

What's funny is Pitt can take an excellent Iowa team to the wire, and everyone expects it, but a crappy penn state team? Why are you all so scared? They stink. Man up.

best part of next week, its put up or shut up time. if we win, we get bragging rights. if we lose, we need to shut up and not make excuses.

both staffs, ours and theirs has a lot to work on this week. even simple things, like our center being able to snap the ball to our qb for god sakes.

The playbook v. YSU and Delaware in the prior two openers was vanilla as well. Pitt still executed extremely well on offense v. Delaware and pretty well v. YSU too. I think that's the concern.

Villanova DL's made 8 solo tackles and had 4 assists.
Villanova LB's made 12 solo tackles and had 14 assists.
Villanova DB's made 15 solo tackles and had 9 assists.

So, X and O experts, can we deduce anything about our line play from these stats? It appears to me that we were blocking the DL, and because we weren't particularly disguising much, the LB's and DB's just read the keys we gave them and were well coached enough, and athletic enough (smaller - but football players) to be in position to make a tackle.

Am I looking through rose colored glasses here?

Delaware wanted nothing to do with that game. They weren't ready to play. There's a big difference.

Was going to say the same thing....didn't see Michigan or Bama play vanilla.

This is a coaching staff that doesn't allow media into practices because this secret info could leak to the enemy.. OF course they have to keep their info under wraps as long as they can..

Pitt needed to score againt YSU becasue they couldn't stop them. The Delaware game was a lopsided beatdown. That was the same squad that blew a second half lead to Iowa and looked like a pickup team the following when they lost AT HOME TO AKRON.

I get that they didn't play well yesterday which the offense didn't. Alarming and cause for concern? I don't know. I'll say this, I would rather win 28-7 (should have been 34-7 if not for some kicking issues) than show some stuff and win 54-7. There were other teams this weekend that did not play well against lesser competition (Miss State lost).

They could have showed more and given the nits something else to practice with but I like the idea of not showing them anything and watching their coaches run around in circles like WTF is going on during the game next week. Kent State moved the ball and ran on them.

I like our chances.

I am sure the pessimists won't believe this, but sanders said without a doubt pitt held back.
I don't think anyone's really arguing that point. But a lot of posters are missing the bigger picture-our players were struggling to execute that limited playbook yesterday. The O line should have been able to wear down that undersized, less talented Nova defensive front, but that never happened. Our guys did not
look sharp, they did not look cohesive, they did not look very physical. That's with a consensus All American guard and a 1st team all ACC tackle. We couldn't run the ball worth a damn against a weak opponent. That's concerning, even in the first game. The jury is out on the receivers, and Peterman showed that he still can't make the deep throw.

I guess it always kind of confuses me... The ACC slate is the most important. So, with that, do people expect Canada to withhold a lot of the playbook the next two weeks because neither game has any bearing on the ACC Coastal race?

-I should use Pitt pics. I count 10 in the box, how about you? Would rather have 10 in the box then 8 on the los, LOL. And that's an I formation, not a shotgun run up the middle.

You're not getting it.
That was all by design.

Anyone with any intelligence football wise could see that early and often. Nova stacked the box from play one. We finally took advantage a little and threw to the tight end in the second quarter just enough to open it up a little to get the win.

And yes, the OL needs more work but get a grip.
