A very good 15th ranked SMU team comes to the Fitzgerald tonight. Some stats...
  • 12 - 3 record and the only team to take down Nebraska in straight sets....3 - 0
  • They have lost 25% of their sets but the margin of loss averages just 4 pts/set
  • Pitt has beaten their opponents by an average 25 - 16 final score....SMU has only been beaten by that margin in 2 sets
  • They block as well as Pitt and score almost as many aces/set as Pitt.....about 2 aces/set
  • Their service error rate is double that of our Panthers.....significant advantage to us
  • Pitt scores 19 pts/set and holds their opponents to 12 pts/set....a 7 point margin
  • SMU scores 18 pts/set and holds opponents to 13 pts/set....a slight 2 point advantage for Pitt
  • Pitt only gives back about 6 pts/set because of errors.....SMU 9 pts/set.....3 pts/set advantage to Pitt
  • Thus....Pitt enters this match with about a 5 pts/set advantage
I don't see SMU winning this match if Pitt hits on all cylinders and falls significantly outside their typical excellent performance. Having said that though....SMU has some excellent athletes.....this should be an exciting match. This is the 1st of a 5 match homestand for Pitt in October. The only away match is this Saturday at SMU.

-Tonight's "W", while not flawless, but pretty close. Really really good stuff.
-It was nice listening to a play by play guy who had done his homework and certainly appreciated Pitt's talent and level of play. He was absolutely effusive throughout the broadcast.
-During Fisher's interview between the 2nd and 3rd sets, he referenced Pitt's serve-receive game. I thought except one brief hiccup, it was just terrific. Especially given that I thought that SMU had some excellent servers.
-Anyone notice that Griffin wore the blue libero jersey tonight, rather than Meyer? I wonder if it's a function of Griffin being a better back up...or an injury to Meyer.
-When I look at the level of play from both Stafford and Babcock as freshman and sophs....I say to myself, "so much for HS player rankings." I can't help but think did these two just blossom between HS and freshman year or...who the hell was ranked above them?!
***One of the very nice things watching this team is seeing how much fun they seem to have playing with one another.

Play by play Guy has gotten better, a lot better.
Two years ago, he knew literally nothing, and the only thing he could ever say was “ terminates” or “ tool the block”

Unfortunately, he still has some weird obsession with Anna Smrek, it really shows when he does Wisconsin games.

This is at least the third game that Griffin had the Libero jersey on… the last five or six games they have kind of rotated that spot

Daniel Gilman was the only one in the country who didn't vote Pitt #1 in the country this week. He said that "Nebraska was playing better".

(And I like Daniel...)
Thanks for that.

I’m watching the replay now since I couldn’t watch live and reading VT as well, it’s amazing seeing people hate on us because we’re so good. Bring on the haters! Hail to Pitt!
I just read the entire 27 pages of match posts on VolleyTalk. It was overwhelmingly laudatory of Pitt. Yes, some posters said they could see them losing in the tournament to either Nebraska or Wisconsin if those teams play at their very best because they think both have a higher upside than Pitt. But, that’s not a knock on Pitt’s ability.

As far as high school rankings, which another poster mentioned, both Stafford and Babcock were highly ranked players coming out of high school. Both committed to Pitt as juniors. It’s not uncommon for volleyball players to commit early.

I saw both play one time in high school. When Stafford was a junior, the star of her HS team was Ella Rubin, who now plays at Stanford. So Stafford didn’t get the pub her play should have earned. You usually aren’t going to put up huge numbers when you aren’t the #1 option on your team. But, I was told Fisher had been recruiting her since at least 10th grade and she was solid with Pitt. Had she been the star of the team for more than her senior year, she probably would have been ranked higher.

I think the fact that Stafford was not the only focus on her HS team probably helped her make the adjustment better at Pitt, where she has to share the outside kills with Babcock and VVG. She is used to not everything being set to her. To me, she also seems to be improving faster.

Babcock was the focus of her HS team, but again she was not the only one making kills. I remember in the match I watched the coach complained that her only weakness was that she “jumped too high.”
And, I think a lot of college coaches saw her as a MB. Fisher recruited her at an outside hitter and she also committed early. Again, while she wasn’t ranked in the top 4 or 5 players in her class, she was highly ranked. Both of them got invitations to and played for age-class US teams.

Right now, I would take either of them over Harper Murray, who probably was the #1 outside hitter recruit in that class based on expert evaluations. I think both are performing at a higher level and both have higher ceilings. I don’t know this for a fact, but I think Fisher looks for players with very high ceilings because he thinks he can get them to achieve. I don’t know if he thought they would be this dominant at this early stage of their college careers.

It’s hard to imagine anyone could have reasonably predicted Babcock and Stafford would be this dominant this quickly.

It seems like they’re playing a different game - last night Babcock turned broken plays into rocket kills off of pure athleticism- she doesn’t need a perfect set or an in system play to put a powerful swing on the ball.

Stafford is somehow a quiet assassin- just gets kills on almost every swing.

Thought VVG was very good last night - she was very good on back row defense and her serve is sneaky deadly- she routinely goes on long service runs - one of her serves last night just dove straight to the floor just as it cleared the net - almost impossible to return .

Couple other in person notes-
- another great crowd -
- really fun match to watch -‘lots of long rallies - SMU seemed to be a very good defensive team -
- SMUs coach seemed frustrated and at a loss — I think she was taken a back just how dominant Pitt is — like SMU seemed to be doing a lot of good things — but weren’t competitive

Match in Dallas should be good !

In the 3rd set Pitt went up 16 - 8 and then ran off 9 of the last 10 points to win 25 - 9. I sit mid court on the team side of the Fitz so I can see the coaches and players really well. I trained my gaze on the SMU coach at that point until the match ended. She was completely motionless, didn't say a word, and seemingly stared into space. It was like she was in a trance. I have seen this a few other times as a match is ending and Pitt is dominating....but nothing like this.

I'm not sure what to expect on Saturday from SMU....but one thing is clear. It is now midseason and Pitt has been consistently winning each set by an average 25 - 15 score. They did it again against a very good SMU team which had not been beaten this soundly in any other set or match this season. Will the Pitt juggernaut continue to roll on Saturday? I can barely wait to find out. That's all.

What Babcock is doing, playing six rotations as an opposite, is other worldly. My daughter and I sort of chuckled that she could make playing the position seem cool since most kids hate playing opposite. It would be stunning not to see her eventually be a dominate force in international play.

I think what makes Pitt look really dangerous is that the hitting errors are starting to level out. Olivia and Val have really settled down.

I think what made me shake my head at the most was how the "doubles rule" is benefiting Pitt. There were some pretty wild sets on both sides last night (SMU's setter is really good) and the lack of double calls just makes Pitt so much more difficult to stop.
