Verne retiring leaves a void in college football voices

He did the sun bowl vs Oregon st. That was painful to listen to. They kept calling out linebacker names for fullbacks. The cbs crew way off their game that day. We also were off our game obviously.

...in my opinion . he and Keith Jackson are in a class by themselves
Jackson/Bob Griese my favorite, basically they were game day before game day existed. They always had the best game of the day no matter what league...although Big Ten heavier than others.
Vern and Danielson were real good. Ron Franklin was real good too...

Only guy growing up who I enjoyed as much as Keith Jackson was Lindsey Nelson. Also enjoyed Frank Broyles and Bud Wilkinson as colormen.

Never liked Lindsey, ND homer.... Frank Broyles was ok , Bud I barely remember, not old enough.

Frank Broyles "the safetyman" and "he's a find young man" Terry Hoage from Georgia was one of his favorites. LOL

Liked Lindsey doing the Cotton Bowl every year.

With Brent being removed by ESPN recently and Verne retiring from college football, there aren't many great voices left. I loved him for SEC games and am glad he'll still be doing college basketball and The Masters. Although, they had a solid replacement with Brad Nessler.

Verne Lundquist, Brent Musberger, and Keith Jackson are the voices I grew up listening. There just don't seem to be announcers like those guys any more.

Definitely, hearing Nelson do the Cotton Bowl was a staple of my youth. Maybe a ND homer in later years, but I think he got his start covering Oklahoma football in the Wilkinson era.

Broyles had the funniest color comments I can remember. He was doing a Clermson game with Keith Jackson, and on a replay sequence, they had isolated on Clemson freshman defensive lineman William Perry, later to become famous as "the Refrigerator". (You have to visualize Frank's tone and inflection here.)

Broyles: "This is big William Perry. He weighs . . . get this, folks . . . THREE hunnert and twenny pounds. THREE HUNNERT AND TWENNY POUNDS!" (This was the early 1980s. when 300-pounders were still relatively rare)

Later in the game, Perry makes a tackle, and Broyles interjects: "You know, Keeeith, . . . they put him on a dite, and he GAINED fifteen pounds. HE GAINED FIFTEEN POUNDS WHILE ON A DITE!!!"

He was great. He was doing color during the period in which Pitt had its great teams and he was ALWAYS very appreciative of how great those teams were.
