Congenital heart conditions are very hard to diagnose if there are no symptoms or irregularities that prompts more thorough testing. A coworker, who is young in low 30's found out he had to get heart surgery after he got in for another check of something else. Turned out it was a congenital condition and he felt fine the whole time. You don't want to mess around with that. Better to be safe than sorry.

wow. i have been posting a lot lately that you just never know what is going to happen. depth. depth. depth. recruit, recruit and recruit some more.

nate has to stay upright this year, we lose him and there is no immediate help on the roster. a risky strategy by narduzzi.

You have to wonder why they don't give physicals to recruits prior to offer. Also does not speak well of high school physicals if these conditions existed then.

I don't think high schools anywhere (possible exceptions being those with health sciences career magnet programs) have the wherewithal to do as comprehensive a medical screening as a major college football program would.

Good thing George Hill flipped from OSU to Pitt. I have a feeling OSU would have thrown him away like a bag of rubbish.
Not true at all. Schools will always honor the scholarship even if an athlete becomes unable to continue to play their sport. Don't try to act like Pitt is holier than any other university. Pitt has no higher moral value than any other D1 football program.

I said ah-oh to myself when I saw that 5 guys were out due to medical issues. This is really sad personal news for each the players.
Regarding the team this year, it could've been worse - a lot worse.
1) Clark was already out this year, forced redshirt due to transfer. No change at all.
2) Gilbert was a certain redshirt this year anyway. A positive re-evaluation next year would put him back on track.
3) Grimm was buried on the depth chart, was going to have to fight hard to make it onto the second team.
4) Moody was battling to make the second team as well; probably would have made it. Thank god we brought in 3 really talented DTs this year in Wheeler, Camp and Watts. Their timetable to playing just got accelerated a bit. In the past, this condition would have really hurt, but our new recruits help. The freshman are talented, just young and inexperienced.
5) Hill. Some thought he would make an impact this year, I didn't really think so. I saw him as a development prospect, eventually playing safety, because I didn't see him beating out the other freshmen at corner for a long time. He had tremendous straight line speed, but not shifty, so he was projected on D rather than as a RB. Could be a long term loss, but PN is loading up on D.
We've got speed in Henderson, Ffrench, and Tipton for running jet sweeps, the most likely spot that Hill would've seen limited playing time as a freshman.

The loss sucks, but as I said, it could have been a lot worse. In sum, the five were a guy who was redshirting anyways due to transfer, two true freshman who were going to redshirt or see very limited time, an OL buried on the depth chart this season, and one second teamer (Moody).

I see it has a great benefit to the Pitt Football Program & University in the same light as James Conner's Attitude of why he chose Pitt! Pitt has one of the finest Medical Professionals & Facilities Worldwide!

I rather have these Young Men know now they have to work towards becoming more healthy and become more inspirational for all of Pitt Players, Alumni, Fans and with Families behind them knowing there is no better place to do it than at Pitt!

It is so unfortunate they have to deal with their Medical Conditions, but when you choose Pitt as your Alma Mater (Adopted Mother In Latin), you choose Pitt for life!

This is what Pitt has been proving ever since it became a University, it becomes a Second Mother not a Second Mile? Pitt's University and Football Culture promotes, protects players as people when in need not a Football Program's Profits!

What better Adopted Mother can anyone have in the Best Medical Professionals & Facilities right on Campus, as you fight to get better as a Student First, Football Player Second, and Alumnus Forevermore in a life made better by coming to Pitt!

This is just another example Why I Post "Smart Recruits Choose Pitt Is It!"

All Parent's, High School Coaches, and Recruits themselves have come to know that Pitt wants you because of you, not just because you can play Football. Everyone of those scholarships will be funded and granted by Pitt!

Pitt Is Here All The Time & Has Proven That Time & Time Again In Pitt Football & Medical History!

Pitt Cured Polio And Could Have Made Billions Waiting On Royalty Patents Payments, But Chose To Help Children & Victims To Prevent Polio Instead Of Seeking Back Money!

"I Have The Best Coaches And Teammates In The Country. I Thank God I Chose Pitt Because Now I Also Have The Best Doctors In The Country, And Together We Will Win. I Know This City Has My Back." James Conner Quote!

Now Here Is My Take On All This So-Called Bad News For Pitt Football And If You Don't Choke Up After Watching It, You Are Not A Pitt Fan?

Many thought 2016 would be a very Special Year with James Conner Return to Health, now Pitt has 5 Players To Inspire not just Teammates but an entire World.

I look forward to following and understand how outsiders will learn how Pitt shares it burdens, banding together to overcome, stand by, fellow Players with personal setbacks! This will be done the "Pitt & James Conner Way," by example, no fanfare, just quiet determination every day to fight back and overcome any health issues setbacks.

What better way to do it, then with Teammates, Coaches, Doctors, and Alumnus at your back whispering in each other ear............"Boy, I Am Glad I, You, & We You Chose PITT IS IT!!!"

I don't know if Pitt will have even a Winning Season in 2016???

I do know everyone of those Student Athletes that gives their bodies, hearts, and minds to play Football at Pitt, are Winners today and will be tomorrow because they came to Pitt!

I am more proud of that then any Win, Wins, Coastal, Conference or National Championship! It made my year and the season has not started yet!!!

You are correct. Best of luck to these guys, but this does not impact our team this year.

-You hate to lose any player going into camp and into the season.

-How would we like to be North Carolina and lose our starting tackle for the entire season, be Miami and lose our #2 WR for the entire season, or be Oklahoma State and have your explosive #2 receiver out until at least October with a broken foot.

-We didnt lose Conner or Whitehead. Losing Conner last year was a killer.

-Best wishes to all these guys. But the only one that had a chance to play this year was Hill. It could be a lot worse.

I don't think so, Meyer's is known to raise millions on a Cruise for Charities in February after Signing week, with many Ohio State Fans, Former Players, and Boosters and I was invited this past year.

It is easy to get get caught up with all what is important to win in anything but truly great people and especially coaches often do things without looking for any credit they just do it.

It may not look like George Hill will be a Great Player at Pitt and he is no doubt feeling low about that possibility of never playing again, but I am pretty sure George Hill is going to be a Great Successful Alumnus of Pitt and all of Ohio will know of it!

I would not be surprised if OSU's Meyer's writes to George and tells him how proud he is of him, just like Duke's David Cutciffe did to Conner, these Coaches with true leadership care, far more knowing what is important. Meyer's proves every year, on the Grid Iron, and quiet does it off the Field without fanfare too.

This pretty much is the worst update I've seen in a very long time. JC's press conference excluded.

Great point and silver lining for these young Panthers!

Think of it this way for the guys found to have heart conditions... without their exceptional abilities in football, they may very well have never known about their conditions until it was too late. Had they just been a regular student, it's likely they never would have had this in depth of a physical.

Sorry to disagree with you. As far as keeping the scholarship that is correct. But go ask some Michigan recruits who had their verbals rescinded very late and close to signing date about morals. Pitt has pretty high morals. Go as JC as well.

Does Pitt football comply with HIPPA laws
obviously not.. At least we are under the scholarship limit.. I was really looking forward to rubbing it in @mjf313's face when Duzzi kept Gilbert at DE.. Best of luck to this young man in future endeavors.. Hill too.. OK, all of them of course..

Tough to hear about the guys who's careers are over, but I am also glad they caught it before anything serious happened.

That's it. While some may say it won't hurt the depth chart this year, the news for Moody and Hill is crushing. They are ready to start a season, and for Hill, his freshman season, and they find out they can never play football again. Devastating for them. But at least they know now instead of having problems then catching it.

If these players formally released their information to the University for a statement, then yes, they did comply with "HIPPA" (should be HIPAA) laws.

thank you, I think this was said in jest. I am sure that the University, before sending out a release, covered their bases..

Having had a brother die from a heart attack induced by idiopathic cardiomyopathy ...this is better for the guys. I would hate to see another Hank Gather's situation

As an aside, all of you should get an echo-cardiogram to see if there is any thickening of one of the heart walls. After my Bro passed I certainly did for peace of mind. It's one of those things that is asymptomatic but can drop you with no notice.

That's the situation I thought of when I read about the Oklahoma State basketball recruit collapsing and dying after a workout a couple of weeks ago.

Dead on with all points. Wouldn't be surprised at all if Meyer has already contacted Hill. All schools will use the medical scholarship to ensure a kid is not kicked to the curb once he signs his scholarship papers. And Urban is involved in a TON of charities in Columbus and Ohio. And if I remember correctly, both Hill and OSU parted way on good terms - there were no bad feelings on either side.

Ugh, i feel for these kids. I couldn't immagine being 18 and at what I thought was the best shape of my life and possibly 3-5 years away from fulfilling a life long dream only to have it taken away. Not taken away because you did not try hard enough, not taken away because you made poor decisions, not taken away by somebody out performing you....but taken away because of something you were born with that nobody ever knew about. That has to be completely depressing for these kids. I hope they stay close to the game, get their educations and build a life/career that they can be proud of. They'll always be family to Pitt!
