Very sad zoo turnout

Zoo looks to be about 85% full. Rest of the place about 55% full. Zoo wins.

For the record, the rest of the place was a lot closer to 5.5% full than 55% full.

9:00 on a Tuesday against a bad Boston College team, I was not expecting many people to be there. And there were a lot less than I thought there were going to be.

Not it’s not. It’s a fine showing from the Zoo.

I thought the Zoo showing was pretty good but the showing by the rest of the Panther Hoop nation was poor. The crowd on hand was nicely spirited though.

My guess was less than 4K in the seats and that might be way too generous.

I guess the question is going to be how long will it take to get the attendance to where it was during the Ben Howland early Jamie Dixon days??

Never

They have to be a perennial Final Four contender for that. Its a pro city and the arena is too big. Yinzers arent showing up in big numbers to see #23 Pitt play unless they're playing Duke, UNC, UVa, or Syracuse.

Pitt just has to do a much better job of selling out the lower bowl. Not sure I'd even sell upper deck tickets until every lower bowl seat is sold.

They have to be a perennial Final Four contender for that. ...as does mostly every other team in the land in order to pack the house....pro city has nothing to do with it...Yinzers, like everyone else, do not like getting home on Wednesday after a Tuesday night game which was never the case in the glory days of the Big East...

College Basketball crowds arent the greatest but bubble type programs (ie Dixon 2/Capel 2) usually draw a little better than us. Look at places like Iowa, Ok St, Creighton, OK St, etc. Being in a pro city definitely hurts.

nice apples to koala bears comparison between some perennial tournament teams and a team that has not sniffed at it since 2016...I could be wrong, but was Pittsburgh not a pro city when the Pete used to be rocking?

The 00 teams had some things going for them that this team does not.

1. They got really good quick, bottom feeder to a top 10-15 team within a year or two. This team may get there, though harder to do in this age of transfers.
2. They got really good at the field house and created an amazing atmosphere there before bringing it over to the new building. 5-6K crowds at the field house were still intimidating.
3. The Pete was brand new and exciting
4. Tickets were dirt cheap when the Pete opened.

The Howland teams had a lot going for them as far as attendance/atmosphere goes. I remember being more sad about leaving the field house than Pitt Stadium because I wasn’t sure they would be able to sustain the atmosphere. They did for a long time at the Pete but it eventually ended. Last nights crowd would have been super intimidating at the field house.

Hopefully the Pete gets back to that level for every conference game.

Its. Not Full for the best team in ACC.

So, one more time, since apparently this never sticks. Attendance is driven by season ticket sales, not walk-ups. Not a lot of hype for the team this year, hence not great season ticket sales. You aren't going to get a big walk up on Valentines day, Tuesday night at 9pm against Boston College.

Which part of this are you having problems comprehending?

If last night's game took place two months ago, attendance would have been about 1500. I appreciate the people who decided to be there, rather than criticize people who didn't come.

As long as attendance continues to trend upward, I'm not concerned with the rate that it happens.

We might get close to that at critical games or very big games. But I doubt it will ever be like that again. Even when we had a "sellout" this year, there were probably 1,000 - 1,500 empty seats. But getting 11,000 to watch a Pitt basketball game is pretty damn good, considering how far this program has sunk in the past 6 years. Even getting 8,000 at The Pete is good now.

I find it hilarious that a fanbase that could barely put in 40k for a coastal clinching win against UVA last year likes to bash students that consistently show up way better

Lots of open seats in the zoo. Too many for a first place team. Act like you’ve been there before.

Were you there? Most of the fanbase wasn't. Student section was the only reason the Pete had any semblance of noise last night.

I said Dixon 2 also.
