What benefit would adding Big East basketball schools do for the conference? We discussed this in the other thread, but I’m just not sure how they’d help increase the pro-rata payout for the football schools.
The Big East gets $80 million/year from Fox. That's roughly $7 million per team and I would estimate 75% of the value comes from those 4. Plus you get MSG. It's essentially the old Big East + Duke and UNC, which is crazy. I think the idea is, let's make a couple extra bucks but get MSG and try to own the East. It also greatly weakens Creighton, SHU, Prov, etc who get players who should he going to Pitt, Syr, BC, etc.
Of course only adding four of the Big East schools won't get you MSG, because the conference will still exist and will still have a contract with MSG. One that runs through 2032.
MSG isnt picking SHU, Prov and a bunch of Midwestern schools over SJU, UConn, Nova, Gtown, Duke, UNC, etc.
They aren't picking. They have a contract. When the contract ends in 2033, then they will have a chance to pick.
While there's no chance of this exact idea happening, my point is they need to do something BIG.
I think the 18 schools need to win 18 billion dollar Powerball jackpots and then plow all that money back into their basketball programs.
I mean there's no chance of this exact idea happening, but my point is they need to do something BIG.
You can't go 4-30 vs the SEC and have 3/18 go to the NCAA Tournament.
You can't go 4-30 vs the SEC and have 3/18 go to the NCAA Tournament. Something big is going to happen. Coach K and Pitino are already hinting at it.
